Venus slumbering.

God I've had a dreadful night. I did sleep a little after six, but was woken by the alarm at eight, and lay there until ten, when the pills began to work, and then managed to get up.

The sleep I did have was marred by bad, stressful dreams. I was in a competition to dress a store window in London. It was a bit like Simpson's in Piccadilly, where I worked for six months when I first moved to London. In fact the building in my dream was a little different, but the staff was the same, including old fusspot Mr 'Betty' Bayliss, giving me hassle whilst I tried to work.

The competition was to sell fox fur collars! Rather than go for a tweedy look, I went along the evening wear route, and rather than use an evening gown from the store, I decided to make one for the reclining manequin I'd chosen. Talk about making it difficult for yourself, even if it was a dream.

The dress in the dream was fairly similar to one I actually have made. The inspiration was the birth of Venus, but instead of emerging from a shell, she came out of the sea draped in seaweed. I used broomsticks to knit thick silk threads, and it was a bit of a triumph.

In my dream though I was really stuggling to dismantle the dummy, and finish knitting the hem of the dress, whilst it was in repose in the window. Incidentally Simpson's was a great big art deco, purpose built store, on Piccadilly, and was the first place in the world to have concave glass windows. When you pass in the street, it looks as if there is no glass there at all. The windows are still there, but now it's a book shop, because after the Simpsons sold it to the Japanese in the 90's, they decided to close it a few years later. I still used to get all the gossip from Anthony Andrews the actor, when I made his shirts afterwards, because he married the Simpson's daughter Georgina. It was also the inspiration for 'Are You Being Served?', as the writers worked there in the 60's. Imagine trying to do your work with Captain Peacock [Betty Bayliss,] peering over your shoulder the whole time.

I awoke from my dream all stressed out again, and feeling knackered from a hard days night work. If I sleep tonight, which I hope I will, I'll go and see if I won and collect my dream prize.

I would give up the cheese on toast for supper.....no, seriously....it is terrible to have a night like that and then realise that no-one is going to PAY you!
