When I first moved into my house in the summer 0f 2004, it had no heating. Well it did have a log burning stove, which seemed quite romantic. I'd never really felt the cold. I was the person going round turning down thermostats, or opening windows, in other people's homes that I felt were too stuffy. I convinced myself that I could live without central heating, and ordered my logs well in advance of the autumn.
By the end of October I realised that I was wrong. The romance of nipping out to the shed to refill the log basket, as well as cleaning out all the ashes, didn't last very long. I bought a heavier tog duvet, as well as a halogen heater for every room, but it was still bitterly cold.
By mid November I decided it was well worth dipping into my savings for, and I called a central heating installer, who promised he'd manage to fit me in before Christmas.
I was lucky, as I didn't have to live with all the mess as they put in the heating system, I just moved back into my bedroom at Mums. They did a fantastic job, even though they struggled downstairs because it's partly stone flagged. I didn't even need to decorate when they'd finished.
Two days before Christmas I moved back in. I decorated the tree, hung the wreath on the door, all in the luxury of warmth. It was also heaven to have warm, dry, fluffy towels again, after my bath/shower.
Last night the forecast said it was going to be very cold. I woke up this morning and sat in bed looking down on the lodge. All the ducks were trying to skate on the ice in a Christmasy wonderland. It looked beautiful.
I was so happy I'd left the heating on last night, even with the thermostat turned way down low, it was still as warm as toast when I got up.
