And it is all Davemacs fault!
His thread about his day in pictures. Well, it has certainly stimulated some interest, and got me out and walking.
Today was a bit grey. Himself was in a recumbent position watching some old Sherlock Holmes film....bleeeugh. I hate them.
Yes, yes.......I know they are classics but they don't do a thing for me.
So I go and get my camera, put on my waterproof jacket(minus the fleecy liner - thank goodness) and told him I was off out for a walk.
I hadn't any real idea of where I would be heading.......so I started on the canal bank.
Walked as far as the Whalley Road bridge - then swung a leftie down towards All Saints School and the park.
I walked through the park. Not much going on there...no dog walkers. A few youngsters playing in the skate park....I walked by a deserted bowling green.
I felt a few plops of rain, I questioned myself - 'should I turn back?'
I didn't turn back, but walked out of the bottom gate and along Charles street...past Oakenshaw House and into the fields that lead down to Rishton Bottoms.
I was sidetracked by the horses. There was a mare and her foal. I would have loved to have petted the foal but there was a deep muddy wet ditch between me and it.......If I had had my wellies on I would have had not a second thought about wading into the mud.
So I just took a snap and made my way down the hill.
On my left was another field with some very big horses in it and to my right a little lonely white horse.
I petted the ones who came close enough to the fence aand then felt myself being nudged by the white horse. As if it was saying 'what about me? Do I get my ears scratched and my muzzle stroked?'
I duly obliged.
I set off down the hill toward Blackburn Road. The little white horse trotted behind me for quite a way the stood and watched me go.
Over the wooden bridge and down towards the cottages. I could see the road now and hear the traffic.
I went through the gate and onto the road.
Should I turn left again up the hill and head for home? No. Across the road is another footpath along the periphery of the Dunkenhalgh. I have never walked this path before.......so here goes.
The stream is to my right, and the dunk is to my left. I could hear a waterfall......I set off to have a look - taking great care to avoid the fresh squelchy 'pasture pies'.
I found the waterfall and gingerly lower myself down onto a large flat. stone to take pictures.
On the other side of the bank is a large tree with two ropes hanging from it. I can only guess that during the warmer weather the youngsters have used this as a rope swing splash down.
Walking away from the waterfall, I find a pair of discarded socks and a sodden grey towel.
Onwards I go....keeping to the path.
I walk a long way. Over another little bridge and towards a field with a herd of cows in it.
The cows look at me but carry on chewing the cud. All except one. She ambles over to me and gives me a bit of a nudge.
I scratch the top of her head and she licks my hand......I go into my pocket and take out a tissue to wipe the cow slobber off my hand and she tries to nuzzle into my pocket. I tell her there is nothing in there and she loses interest and walks away.
I hope there is no-one within earshot or they will have my card marked 'Nutter'.
Under the motorway bridge and up a bit of a hill. More cows in the field to my left, and sheep and rams(at least two rams) in the field to my right.......the gate to the field is open and I walk towards some lambs....thinking I might get to stroke them......the ram calls and they run off.....and the ram stands belligerently daring me to step any further.
I didn't want to be chased by the ram...so I backed off.
I could see civilization in the distance, but was unsure where the path would bring me out( Davemac reliably informed me that it would have brought me out at Church Kirk)....being unsure, I decided to go back the way I came.
I did wonder if there was any path through the fields that would lead me up to the Dunk.....but couldn't actually see any.
Before too long I was back at the road again.
Looking at the bit of a 'brew' from Rishton Bottoms...up past the Dunk and what used to be GEC........I t was at the traffic lights the I happened upon Davemac. We stopped for an amiable chat.
Then I came home. Himself thought I had got lost.
So that was my longish walk.
