Went to the Old Silent Inn last night. I'm sure that anyone who has read this journal will be familiar with our love of the Old Silent Steak. It's a fillet stuffed with stilton, wrapped in bacon and served in a port and mushroom sauce. In a word........delicious. We arrived there to find that it has been removed from the menu due to taking so long to cook, people were complaining and asking why their food was taking so long.
With being on holiday we hadn't been there for a while and I was hanging out for my steak. I ended up having the steak fillet in stilton sauce which was really good but not the same. We have asked that when we go again, if we ring up and order can we have the Old Silent steak. Luckily the reply was yes, so I am happy.
I have to admit that I am a real carnivore. I don't know how these people with consciences live without meat. I reckon that if we weren't supposed to eat meat, then animals wouldn't taste so good would they and our digestive systems wouldn't be able to tolerate meat. I once remember giving a bacon butty to a veggie acquaintance and telling him that it was soya. Our Grego was in on it too and honestly it's not as bad as it sounds, we did the guy a favour.
My mum has this friend who is a bit of a hippy type, a free spirit who believes in allsorts of strange crap. She has a son and raised him as a single parent and had never once given him meat. He was a weedy little thing who got picked on a lot, but he was also quite intelligent. Me and Grego used to babysit for him when my mum and her mate went out. We were in our late teens at the time and this young lad was staying over at our house. We were making bacon butties for supper and told him that my mum had bought him some bacon made from soya and would he like a sandwich. Hence the bacon butty and he loved it. it was probably far better than the lentils and nuts that he normally lived on.
I've never really felt guilty about it, as I reckon that we did him a favour in allowing him to make an informed choice. The last I heard of him he was still tucking into the bacon butties and is now a bonafide member of the carnivore club. I know that being a mum is not an easy job but I do think it is so wrong to deprive a child of essential nutrients purely because of your own beliefs. there's nothing wrong with not eating meat if you have tried it and don't like it but to force an idea onto a child......meat is murder.......and deprive them of the opportunity to make up their own minds, that's just sad.
