Where was I?

Oh yes….I was the person who was up and down the stairs many many times.
Trying to get food and drink into himself….doing his temperature…taking him to the lav….giving him paracetamol, electrolyte solutions
Because he was drinking so little his wee was like dark mild…yes, too much information….but it worried me.

I told him in terms that were short and sharp that he was on course for a serious consequence.
He told me again that he felt he was dying.
Very cruelly, I told him that if he were intent on cashing in his chips, then to hurry up about it then I could claim the insurance and have a good spending spree.

I felt like a nagging witch…but still I kept on chipping away.

I was going out to get the food that he said he fancied….to find that when I put these in front of him and he did not eat them….I was not just frustrated, I felt angry that I was putting in all this effort and getting nowhere.

He looked like a scruffy old tramp too…he would not get up for a wash….so I told him I was going to sleep on the sofa as he was too smelly for me to get good sleep.
He said he felt too weak to stand at the wash basin
or in the shower…..so I brought a stool upstairs and told him that now he had no excuse.

Slowly, very slowly and after three weeks he started to get better…he ate a weetabix with sliced banana…he managed a cup of tea….a slice of fruit bread toasted with lots of butter on it….a big bunch of green grapes.
He came downstairs for a little longer each day and after a month indoors…and a torrid time.
He got in the car and drove me to Aldi.
He stayed in the car while I shopped…..but little by little he got there.
He had lost just over two stone in weight….and he was weak and wobbly for another month.
But by the beginning of December he was back to something like normal.

So we both survived this virus.
For me…it was only a trial because I was dealing with him being ill…..and my brush with this virus was mild….I have gone to work feeling worse than this made me feel.
Yet I know this is not how some people are affected.
It makes me wonder if my many years working on the wards, and through all the winter flu seasons, had made my immune system better at fighting it off.
I also considered that not wearing a mask at all at any point during this pandemic, had allowed me to gain some immunity by being exposed to low levels of viruses in my everyday life.

Of course I will never know for sure.

In the future I may laugh at our experiences…but not yet…it is still too fresh.
I can thank the virus for giving me a thigh gap(I lost weight too…but I think it was more because of my activities…climbing those stairs.
I am not so keen though on my Seb Coe calves.

Both of us are well now….and himself keeps embarrassing me by telling people that I saved his life.

Good to hear all is now well with you both, hopefully it stays that way too.

Best wishes & kindest regards Ma,

Sonny Jim. :) xx

Thank you son….yes…it was for me, just a bump in the road….for him it was a pothole.

It was Flu…pure and simple.
Hope you and yours stay safe…..and have a lovely family Christmas.

Cashy it was rough, but only because it was hard work getting him going…or keeping him going.
I think we are fully mended now but thank you for your good wishes.

Margaret, he is very lucky to have you, you are a real trooper administering to his needs when, even though you say your dose was mild, I bet there were times when you would have liked to have just curled up in bed yourself.

No Dorothy….if I take to my bed then it is serious……I know people die in bed…..and yes there were days that I did not feel so rosy.
One of these days I had got ready to go out and buy milk.
I walked to the bus stop and felt decidedly queer.
So I took myself back home and drank milk less tea for a day or two.

I do not give in to illness……it feels like I have surrendered.
But looking after him was a real trial of my patience.
