This has been bugging me for a while. Now I know that men and women are fundamentally different, but there is no greater difference between the 2 genders than the ability to give directions. My expericences in the last 12 months have led me to come to the above conclusion..... Here's why......
I have a generally good sense of direction and am able to read maps. I usually get to wherever I'm going without getting lost. On the other hand, Sparky has a fantastic sense of direction, and always seems to know exactly where he's going without the aid of a map, compass or any other diagrammatic navigational aid.
The main difference between us is that when Sparks is directing me anywhere I tend to feel quite lost. Here's an example.....
Whilst I am driving he will say " Go East on the M 'chock a block' turn off at junction 14, go North on the M 'roadworks' exit at junction 20 then go West."
Now I don't know about the rest of the women out there, but directions which involve the use of East, West, North and South mean nothing to me. He may as well be speaking Icelandic. I honestly try to look intelligent and ask him to repeat the directions, but I cannot help the look of pure befuddlement that appears on my face. When this look manifests itself, it is met with the 'how did I end up with someone as thick as you' look on his face.......
Finally I have to say "do I turn left or right?" "What's the name of the junction?" (don't even get me started on junction numbers) You see, if he just said "get on the M 'cones again' and follow the signs for London / Birmingham / Blackburn, I wouldn't be so confused. If he just said "turn left at..... or go straight on at....., my life would be so much simpler.
I wouldn't mind but my dad gives directions involving junction numbers, East, West etc. too. It must be a man thing.......
Well that's it for now, I am going to see if I can find my way to work. I wonder if I go West or East on the M65, all I know is that I turn left at the Dunkenhalgh.......
