Wycombe Match Thread

It was certainly poor Fayre dished up yesterday by Stanley in patches but the main thing was we took something from the game which we did.

It is a work in progress but four weeks ago would anybody bar those who knew the players forseen us go on a five game unbeaten run?

There is more to come from the team and yesterday we had definite options from the bench with players coming back from suspension and injury which can only help strengthen the team on the pitch and push us further up the League.

Nine points from five games is automatic promotion form!!,lots of options on the bench/squad,but I do agree that when you play 4-4-2 and your wide men are not on there game,it can be difficult

If only Odejayi had been on from the start, it would have been a very different game. He was winning just about every long ball against the two big defenders and he was a natural target at throw ins. Before his arrival, those centre backs must have been having one of their easiest ever games. James Gray reminds me more and more of Podge. Non-stop running and effort, but little end product and far too easily outmuscled.

As others have said, there were some real disappointments, notably Webber and Naismith.

Midfield is a worry. I happen to think it is more of a tactical problem than one of individuals. I am probably in a minority but I feel sorry for Luke Joyce because I feel that too much is being expected of him in our current set-up. His options as a creative midfield player are very limited. Murphy seems to have a wandering role and can't be relied on to be in space to receive a telling pass. The hard-working Mingoia is not a natural left winger (or even left-footer), nor for that matter is Naismith a natural right winger (or a right-footer). The first reaction of both is to cut inside, towards an already crowded midfield. So it seems to my naive mind that Joyce has limited options when he gets the ball. For threats from the wing, we have to rely on Hunt and Naylor/Wilson/Liddle. Yesterday, Hunt made a couple of great forays forward but Wilson had his hands full against a lively right winger. Anyway, just my thoughts!

Agree with most of that, RR, but Mingoia made several moves down the outside of his full back and got in some decent crosses or cut backs, as he did for Murph's winning goal at Morecambe. My main beef (of many) with Joyce is that when he receives the ball in an attacking position he invariably goes for a sideways pass instead of driving forward and committing defenders, giving the opposing defence time to organise. That, as well as being content to knock the ball anywhere when under pressure in midfield. However, I would never question the effort he always puts in, but we need more than that.

Common sense from the Wycombe forum:-

"..a typical example of "put on your high-viz jacket and hang your brain on the peg till later". Trying to force people to sit at front of their 3 row "stand" in a monsoon because "that's the rules" was just silly and unnecessary"

Don't think standing at the back would have helped, though, as the monsoon was coming at them horizontally.

redraine,
I hope the club realise that the stewarding goes along way to leaving an impression with an away fans experience and opinion of our club.

I am no fan of SOME of the stewards at our club, they make work for themselves looking for any excuse to show who is boss.
I use the word some as I do not know them all and I'm sure there must be some decent ones.

Quite agree, Davo. Rarely being able to get to home games but I can confirm that club's stewards are the main impression for away fans. Fortunately, most are good humoured, Wycombe's being some of the most pleasant, but it only takes one to sour everyone's impression of a club. Cheltenham employ one in particular who looks like he's swallowed a wasp and seems downcast if he can't generate a bit of trouble.

I will add to that what a great set of fans Wycombe have. Ive always enjoyed going away with their brilliant stewards, which put ours to shame really.

Also had a great natter with a couple of them in the Crown beforehand.

Im sure they will be in the top 8 come May.

Agree,
Wycombe have the best stewards in league 2.
Always a good welcome and they leave you alone.

I've also a soft spot (!) for the stewards at Dagenham. It sounds like it may touch a raw nerve from yesterday but I'll never forget the time we were stood behind the goal in horizontal rain and the Daggers' stewards invited us into the small covered stand for the second half. Of course it kept them out of the rain too, but it was a nice gesture that has stayed with me.

With regards to stewards, think they need to speak to the management, I say this because I was informed by a club official that there are 3 rows of seats PLUS standing room at the rear and that the Whinney Hill away stand holds about 200. So any steward that told Wycombe fans to sit down, were, I am afraid, in the wrong!

And so they limped back to Southern climes !....

In the knowledge that they had tried their best !!...

I think I have worked out what our current playing formation is......
It is the impressive Betinneli in goal with a square of eight outfield players with a big hole in the middle where two midfield players are clearly needed!
Every team we play seem to know how to exploit that big hole and attacks come straight down the middle of the field often from breakdowns after our own attacks, especially after free kicks and corners!
I am sure that JB is trying to get some bodies in for midfield. Peter Murphy for me has Stanley written through every part of his body like Blackpool rock but I honestly think that had he not scored another late goal that his rating would have been about 3 out of 10. Luke Joyce plays too deep and takes too much time deciding where he is going to pass the ball and hence often ends up passing it sideways or back. Creative enforcers needed urgently to fill the hole!
Defence looks good especially Aldred who would make a good caption for me. He is a "Captain Courageous" IMHO and would lead by example. Kayode is a must to start next match with Gray or Webber playing off him like Lutel James used to do off Paul Mullin years ago!
Anyway, confidence is better, we look like we are expecting to score goals and have a grand "never say die" attitude.
