9am on the morning of Friday the 8th July.
Sat in the car with my pretty new dress on and t’other half driving in his shirt and smart trousers, we were off……………………………….to York Races!!!
Both excited and didn’t know what to expect as we had never been to the races before.
I am sat there glad that I had bought one of them maxi dresses that has the crinkle look to it (you know the ones were when you wash them you can twist them up to dry them).
Got to the bottom of Burnley Road and t’other half decides to start the usual, arguing with the SatNav!!!
Apparently I had set it wrong.
Now can you please tell me how I had set it wrong when I had programmed it to take us the shortest distance to York????
Nope neither can I but apparently it was wrong, I should have set it to the less millage.
Now I may be blonde but is it not the same shortest distance = less millage???
Anyway I bit my tongue, not going to argue and spoil the day, jeez we were only 1 minute into the journey at the bottom of Burnley Rd!!
So off we go, we had a sing along, a bit of a picnic in the car and a diversion (road past blubberhouses was closed!) but we got to the hotel in the end at 11:00.
Went into the reception and booked in, looked very nice in the pub area. They told us to fill in the usual form and then took us to our room. Very nice! Big bed, nice clean fresh smelling towels and lotions and potions in the bathroom!!
York races opened at 11:15 so we wanted to get there pretty early so we could get our bearings so as t’other half phoned for a taxi I put a bit of slap on!! Didn’t take long, then a quick wee and we were standing outside for the taxi!
Taxi arrived and I couldn’t believe that they had sent a brand new 11 plate fancy car to pick us up!! Very impressed!! Driver was a very nice chappy, told us that the races had started to get busy and we should be in for a good day as long as the rain stops away. He told us were to go after the races to get a taxi to wherever we wanted which I thought was good because I didn’t want to wander around late looking for one when I had had a few drinks!!
We walked in and I couldn’t believe how big the place was!!! It was huge but very clean and plenty of places to eat and get a drink. So that was first on our list to get something to soak the ale up. Nothing fancy we just both had a mega hot dog each!!
We looked a right pair all suited and booted eating these big hot dogs but they were bludy good!!
Next have a walk around and see were out tickets allowed us to go. We ended up walking all the way round some of the stands and ended up in front of the big steps upto the bars/track viewing area so up we went to quench our thirsts and look through the programme!!
Both settled on some seats with our pints I flicked through the book and decided as it was only half an hour between each race I would put all my bets on at the beginning and if I saw someone else I fancied I would have another little flutter nearer the time if I had time after going to the loo and having another bevvie!!
T’other half decided that he would bet as it went along, prob thought he would put his bets on while I was having a wee so then he wouldn’t be standing around waiting for me!
All bets placed we made our way to the viewing spot to watch the first race!! I had to keep checking what number I had betted on as I kept forgetting!! Too caught up in the excitement I think!!!
Then in a blink of an eye it was the last race!!
I honestly don’t know where the afternoon had gone (mind you did enjoy the drinking part in-between races a bit!!) we hadn’t done too bad, I had a few thirds and 2nds and one 1st so I think I had made my money back that I had started with but then couldn’t resist betting on more horses!!
T’other half had the same as me really, we didn’t bet much on each races but had made our money back.
T’other half had put his bet on and I had mine ready and then just before the horses came past to line up for the races he went off to put another bet on. I thought nothing of it just thought that another horse had caught his eye.
When he came back he showed me his ticket and I burst out laughing……………………………………………………………
HE HAD ONLY GONE AND PUT ANOTHER BET ON THE SAME HORSE!!!!
Couldn’t believe it, ale must have gone to his head as he hadn’t realised!!
Anyway nothing we could do the horses were off so we watched in silence, in a way I wanted his horse to win more than the one I had bet on so then we would have had quite a bit coming back but guess what position his horse came?
9th!!!!!!
He is never going to live this one down, he isn’t blonde either!!
When we came out of the races we both decided that too much alcohol had been drunk for us to go to town centre so off we went back to the hotel to have a “cosy” night in the room with a bottle of wine!!
