Sir Harrison Birtwistle , in his 70s, a Huncoat lad, AGS Old Boy, is rated in the top five British-born composers of music. There are those who don't rate his music, being regarded as 'modernist', but his photo is on the wall of the gallery in the Royal Albert Hall alongside Purcell and Britten.

Rich and famous may deserve a place in posterity, I know a few modest folk that have equal rights for fame, because they are there when the rest of us need them and they often smile.

So come on, never mind arty farty, and others made their money and left, type people what about those such as lettie worked hard became qualified then worked even harder to gain extra qualifications,? do they not deserve recognition?

;)

Sorry Lettie if this is an embarrassment but, without ordinary humans the others would be nowhere.

I know what you saying Less, and personally I'm more excited when discovering someone of humble origins who's made a mark on the world, such as Margret Mckay/McCarthy, but if I was to do an obituary thread for every hardworking person in the area, I'd soon be dead myself.

:D

Nearly all the people I've listed are 'ordinary'. It's just that their skill/talents has extended past the area of their birth.

He already has his own thread, along with Ossie Clark.

I just thought I'd record the details of other local people, who've made an impact in their own field, but who perhaps we don't have enough details on, to justify their own separate thread.

We went to Southport Airshow last year and watched the Red Arrows. One of the flight team members went to Mount Carmel, so presumably from Accrington.

Geoffrey Bridge, oboist/musical agony uncle. Born Accrington. (19-?)

Geoffrey Bridge was born in Accrington, Lancashire, the son of professional musicians. After a period of medical training at St Andrews University he studied the oboe at the Royal College of Music continuing with Leon Goossens and later with Heinz Holliger. Following his professional recital debut in the Manchester Midday Concert series of 1962 Geoffrey became a solo artist for the Arts Council of Great Britain. He has broadcast solo and chamber music recitals on BBC radio and made solo appearances on both independent television and radio.
