Re: swine flu case confirmed from hyndburn park school!

There is a notice on the door of the Acorn Medical Centre saying --If you have flu-like symptoms do not enter this building,Call NHS Direct.

Re: swine flu case confirmed from hyndburn park school!

This is what it says on nhs direct website

Alert: Important information about swine flu

Last updated 5:02 PM Monday 06 July 2009

With more than 7,400 confirmed cases of swine flu in the UK, important changes have been made to the way the virus is being tackled. Read the latest official advice to help protect yourself and others.

Key messages

If you have flu-like symptoms and are concerned that you may have swine flu:
  • Read up on swine flu symptoms then use the NHS Direct swine flu symptom checker
  • If you are then still concerned, stay at home and call your GP
  • If the GP confirms swine flu by telephone, they will give you a voucher reference entitling you to anti-viral medication
  • Give this number to a healthy friend or relative and ask them to pick up the antivirals for you from a designated local collection centre
Note: If you belong to a high-risk group it is particularily important you start taking antivirals as soon as possible. High-risk groups include people with long-term conditions, those over 65, children under five and pregnant women.

You can't beat a good diagnosis by phone. I wonder who will be the first to die because GP's could not be bothered to do a home visit and carry out a proper diagnosis?

There is no guarantee that you get a correct diagnosis if they DO see you

Not if they took precautions, what are they supposed to do if the GP has a sign on the door saying go away?

Re: swine flu case confirmed from hyndburn park school!

All parents collecting children at Siobhan's nursery were sent home today with a letter from the health protection agency saying a child who attends the nursery had been clinically diagnosed as suffering from swine flu.

As I was there from 4 o clock for a meeting with Siobhan's key worker, I was surprised that not one member of staff mentioned anything to me until I was signing Siobhan out, only then was I given a copy of the letter.

Unfortunately this happens all to often with cancer patients and quite often drugs that might have been effective with an early diagnosis turn out to be useless.

I am of the understanding that cancer sufferers have an open appointment with the specialist if there is signs of a new growth of Skin
Cancer (Self Diagnosed)
Fortunately I can walk into primary care and point out the problem and be seen without appointment.
I have had it thown in my face many times by the website knowalls that I am no longer entitled to the care of the NHS.......Wrong.
I am entitled to have extended holidays wherever and whenever I chose.
I have not surrendered my passport, I have not opted to join the Spanish System. I still have a British Driving Licence....I do not claim benefits. Nor do I intend to whilst in Spain.
If I need to come to England for NHS care then so be it.
I have never crabbed the NHS nor do I intend to.
End of rant.

Not from my experience whilst Ian was ill, I did have contact with a wonderful nurse who I rang if there were any concerns. But as for open appointments with the specialist, never heard of it before. Maybe other people have, it would be interesting to hear.

Re: swine flu case confirmed from hyndburn park school!

If a referral from a GP suspects that the patient being referred has cancer, then there is a process by which an appointment will be given within a two week period......in my experience GPs have phoned consultants (Gynae) and the patient has often been seen either that day or the next....and at every clinic there were always two appointments left vacant to accommodate such happenings.
Whilst I do not know of an 'open door' situation for these kinds of patient...in reality they (the patient) usually form a bond with one of the Nurses......and they can intercede with the consultant if the patient has particular concerns.
On the Unit that I worked on, we had a lovely Christie trained Cancer Specilaist Nurse who could always be accessed by the patients....she would speak with consultants about her patients worries and organise a visit if this was required.

I don't know what happens now....I have been retired for 7 years...or what happens in other specialties or areas.

I see from the BBC website that the kids at Peel Park school are being encouraged to handle vermin. Would you be happy if this was one of yours? (little brat, that is). Even if one of these rats with wings is a gift from the Queen, they still carry as much disease as the non-flying version, not least a pretty nasty and incurable lung disease. I wonder if LCC education dept are aware of this or the local Health & Safety office?
