As children, if we were rooting about in Grans cupboard... (you know the one, the it's the one built to the side of the chimey breast with provisions in, just in case a state of emergency or WW3...

I think the expresion is, in fact, 'skens like a basket o' whelps' ie new pups that can't yet see straight. The saying has been changed over the years as no-one seems to call pups whelps nowadays. ...
