Re: Free grit for all!

I would have thought that you'd have been quick to point out Peter's contributions to the online world through his Twitter account? He seems very good at holding his own when it comes to knocking...

Re: Free grit for all!

Here at Rishton Towers I do my bit by getting the servants to empty ashes from the hearth onto bits of Bridge Street which don't have enough grit.

Works a treat and saves those precious salt...

Re: Free grit for all!

Salt and grit only works effectively at dissolving ice down to a temperature of between -10 and -13 degrees so I am told and in the past two years we have had temperatures down to as low as -22 (if...

Re: Free grit for all!

It has actually John, my apologies for being absent for a little while.

The clinical waste collections are going to be one of those neat little ideas that certain people latch on to as a prime...

Re: Free grit for all!

It seems that the power of Accyweb remains as strong as ever since the mythical tongue-in-cheek figure that I attributed to this scheme last year was wheeled out as a hideously embarrassing...

Re: Free grit for all!

Grit works fine on snow-covered pavements, the only real problem comes when the temperature drops below -12 degrees as salt becomes ineffective so I'm told.

As for grasping at straws, you may...

Re: Free grit for all!

If you secretly really do believe the first part of that then I must rank very low on your list of people to have respect for.

As for the second part, 'hate' is a very strong word although I must...

Re: Free grit for all!

In actual fact I did as part of my Area Council mail shot. It was also announced online on my Facebook and blog pages, at my surgery and the Area Council meeting which everyone in the village was...

Re: Free grit for all!

Of course, and the honest answer is that I don't know.

As it stands, I understand that 8,639 bags have been ordered through this scheme and it has gone £7,500 over budget which means that...

Re: Free grit for all!

Graham got my full support in Rishton in the election campaign and will continue to get it for the rest of his tenure in politics. Every objection I have ever heard him make to Conservative policies...

Re: Free grit for all!

That safe a seat that Baroness Warsi was parachuted in to help the Tory campaign and the majority has dropped to a just a few hundred instead of the landslide it once was.

It's clear that the...

Re: Free grit for all!

If you're on about national politics then I'll agree that there is an awful lot of objecting just for the sake of it on all sides. I personally am happy to leave them to it, Westminster is far...

Re: Free grit for all!

It was a borough-wide thing, but you're talking about trying to inform 80,000+ residents about a scheme with a window of two weeks.

Residents in Baxenden were informed by blanket election...

Re: Free grit for all!

You monster!

Fortunately, I kept a few bags of fire ash for just such an occasion and it eats through ice for fun, even when cold. The residents on Bridge Street were grateful and made rather...

Re: Free grit for all!

Are you aware of the irony of that statement?

We couldn't deliver grit to de-ice the roads because the roads were icy?

A borough-wide scheme which involved no extra effort on the part of the...

You've got me bang to rights there, Bernard.

You'll have to forgive me, I'm only a junior opposition backbencher after all.....

Re: Free grit for all!

If three people can deliver leaflets to the whole of Rishton in five hours I suspect it is just about possible walking behind a grit spreader that needs refilling every few streets.

Let's be...

Re: Free grit for all!

Actually, the only fair way would be names out of a hat. We've had the spin about height above sea level but that would have meant Rishton got its grit bags first and it hasn't happened...

Even...

Along the pavements.

When the weather is as severe as last week.

The borough caretakers (not much litter picking to be done when it's frozen under the ice).

To put that idea in...

Re: Free grit for all!

Less has already commented on the £6.6m bit and even Cllr Britcliffe has heard about it as he mentioned it in full council on Tuesday.

Re: Free grit for all!

That's sort of what I was driving at but didn't put it quite as eloquently as you! The county councils are only really concerned with major routes, sorting out minor roads is (if they choose) within...

Re: Free grit for all!

Local councils are responsible for minor roads so technically there is no reason why they couldn't organise it. I suspect it would be a damn sight easier and cheaper than trying to deliver 36,000+...

Re: Free grit for all!

Maybe by just abandoning the vote-grabbing exercise and sending the gritters down the side streets once in a while would have been easier and cheaper.

Ossy and Bash are first on the list, Rishton...
