You could always do what some guys here do: take your car to be fixed; ask the mechanic for the broken bits he replaced; then take the messed up struts, springs etc. and dump the suckers on the steps...

The steel plates are a great idea ... but in the absence of these, flourescent paint along the edges of the canyons at least provides some warning ... it's cheap and effective ... maybe LCC could...
