Re: coronation street girls
Sorry Becki, never heard of them..........What's Coronation Street?
|
Re: coronation street girls
ha ha.......... its a soap dear you know like eastenders and emmerdale.
lads have their footy and girls have their soaps. |
Re: coronation street girls
And they should be allowed to keep them as well…….soaps that is?
I take your point Becki and they have a right to be seen as local made good, but they are not good actresses are they and would we what to admit to knowing of these individuals…yuk. I wouldn’t. They should get proper jobs and return our TV screens back to real life programming. Just an opinion. |
Re: coronation street girls
What's eastenders and emmerdale? I wash with soap!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nah...I'm being unfair to you.....course I've heard of them, but never watch them. If you think they are the right sort of characters for Accy Hall of Fame...you say so! But are they world famous? |
Re: coronation street girls
I agree with you becki. Julie lived up dill hall way, i think its the first st off riding barn st on the left elm???? something street. One of my claims to fame is i kissed janice (vicky) in churchills!!! :D
|
Re: coronation street girls
duno about that. probably not. dont matter though or there is always accrington stanley, now that IS an asset to accrington even though i dont like football
|
Re: coronation street girls
honestly!! you kissed janice! wow. thats pretty funny actually. yeah it was just off riding barnes st and dill hall lane cant remember the name of it. hayley came to my school (moorhead) then to accy and rossendale college in rawtenstall
|
Re: coronation street girls
You are thinking of Elmfield Street becki, my mum lived next door to julie and her mum and dad untill she died. I have known julie since she was little, but have not seen her much as she now lives in manchester with her partner and child.

Re: coronation street girls
its quite easy to follow the year of our queens coronation waas 1953 the rest is self explanatary ( sorry for going off thread)
|
Re: coronation street girls
Other Accrington talent includes Mina Anwar. Brought up in Church with her family, she has been in sitcoms and sketch shows. Played Constable Habib in Rowan Atkinson's Thin Blue Line, is now working alongside Ade Edmondson. Starred with Sarah Lancashire in the drama Birthday Girl. I was best mates with her older sister as a child, and Mina was our Grego's best mate. :D
|
Re: coronation street girls
I like her, I never knew she was from Church.....Where abouts then did she live.
|
Re: coronation street girls
Think it was Barnes St number 3 or 5. I was best mates with her sister whilst in infant school, we were joined at the hip. Went round there quite a lot to play, have tea etc. Mina was 2 years younger than us, and was our Grego's mate, but we moved into Accy when I was 8 so we all temporarily lost touch. Met up with my old buddy again at Moorhead, where she now teaches, and we still keep in touch. :)
|
Re: coronation street girls
Good on ya becki, this is true.
I need my hands slapping. Shame on me. |
Re: coronation street girls
Paddy the vet out of emmerdale, he is Accy born and bred. Also an actress out of the bill. Called connie in real life, tried to burn down the station and kidnapped some kids and hid the boiler room? You get the picture!
|
Re: coronation street girls
mystic meg lived in accy at one point i think
|
Re: coronation street girls
OK Becki so lads have football and gals have soaps; is that true? Perhaps that is why they came up with Footballers Wives ha - kill two birds with one stone lol!
|
Re: coronation street girls
When I have had the misfortune to catch 'Footballers Wives' I aint seen much football!
|
Re: coronation street girls
Yep that is correct - little football but a lot of other kinds of ball play,if you get my drift?lol
Further in the context of your quote;"It is lucky for politicians that people don't think!" to para-phrase Hitler. |
Re: coronation street girls
Yes Accrington and district can be proud of its homebread actors, its like when Les said to Janice (JANICE YUV GOT CLASS).
|
Re: coronation street girls
and we should be proud of Jack Duckworth and his motivational skills with the Bowling Team!
|
Re: coronation street girls
What about the short girl in the sixties TV sitcom 'The Liverbirds', didn't she come from Ossy?

I seem to recall seeing Julia Haworth in coronation street being a baby sitter or something. She used to go St Christophers (year below me I think), she was in a CITV program at the time called 3-7-11.
|
Re: coronation street girls
I see Polly James sometimes, she is a friend of Julia Foster, who's now an antique dealer (she was in Half a Sixpence amongst other things, and she married Lionel from the Four Pennies, didn't last). I see Julia, usually at antique fairs, and we always have a chat about Blackburn and Accy (she had a shop in Blackburn for a while). Polly went to Paddock House (later than me), so we compare notes on the nuns.

Re: coronation street girls
Waszn't there a geezer from Accrington on "Who wants to be a Millionaire?" last year - he won something - his name was Sid!

Re: coronation street girls
Corrie is the piece of Lancashire that we really enjoy here in Canada. Many times we are really laughing hard at an expression we have not heard in many years. The things you forget when not using is mind boggling. There are times that I just can't hear the Lancs accent in my mind. Then I get with my sister and we are zapped right back into being Accy lass's again. I have been here 38 years this May and my sister has been here 30 years. Time flys by especially as you get older.
|
Corrie as a global link to the NW.
lts great Corrie, keeps you in touch with your roots, it did for me & l was only with cockneys & Glaswegians for twenty years! Where is the story up to in Canada? - has Ernie Bishop been shot yet? oooppps!! Don't worry Emily finds happiness with Arnold Swindley a very nice bigamist from Rossamund St..
|
Re: coronation street girls
LOL oh thos enames zap me back a few years. I disliked Swindley, wanted to throttle him. I can still see prim and proper Emily with her hair up in a French roll. I gained new respect for her when she spent the night in a tree in protest.
We are behind you guys with the episodes , we are having our stomachs curdled with Todd and Carl right now. In fact last night Todd told Eileen. More fun tonight !! |

You're not that far behind,[about six months,] they leave all the gay politics & get a really funny gay character Sean who is more like the down to earth female characters of the past. Think a cross between Hilda & Raquel,[ voulez-vous couchez avec moi Ken?], with just a touch of the Minnie Caldwells!
|
Re: coronation street girls
Oh those balck and white Minni, Ena and ???? I can see her but no name is coming. She loved Sonny Jim. The Rovers trio.
Elsie Tanner what a character, rolling sleeves up to go bash some one that said something she din't like. Gail living with Elsie or has my son used to call Gail, "big hair gal". Lovely walk down memory lane. |

Martha LONGHURST! Thank you. APPARENTLY ANNIE WALKER SAID SHE MARRIED BENEATH HER STATION,[JACK], & was really a BEAUMONT from Clitheroe! sorry about the caps.
|
Re: coronation street girls
What about the Corrie men? The street has had it's heroe's and villans over the years. When did we have the first villan? Was it when Ernie Bishop was shot or before that.
It is amazing how much goes on in one street and has been going on for what45 years? |
Re: coronation street girls

Which ones Polly James? Out ' the Liver Birds?
I am guilty of watching da soaps, but Eastenders is a little boring now, they should bring Mitchell brothers back. It's mainly the story lines that get me watching - for example the Katy thing - but to be honest all that bluberring gets on my nerves after a while. They should bring back Brookside! |
Re: coronation street girls
About bringing things back - I heard that Paul Robinson has returned to Neighbours!
Anyone got any news on this? |

Re: coronation street girls
I once had dinner and drinks with, wait for it, Dereck and Mavis. If anyone remembers them and I had a brew at Granada with Gayle and Bett Lynch.

I see Julia Foster quite often at antique fairs - she's now a dealer, having given up showbiz. Her best friend is Polly James, and Julia absolutely loves Church and Ossy - she comes up quite often to see Polly's mum.

Re: coronation street girls
Julia Foster, Havent heard of her since she was married to Lionel Morton, Did he come from Clayton, Sparth Rd area. Bought a couple of shirts from his Boutique in Blackburn, My dad went mad when he found out how much I payed for them said he could have bought a suit, Shirt & tie at Burtons for that. I remember her coming on stage at the King Georges Hall, Blackburn, at a New Years Eve Ball, when the Four Pennies, were headlining, they were, Lional Morton, Fritz Fryer, Alan Buck, Mick Walsh, Did they get there name from Penny St in Blackburn, Marie Reidy, I think got them the record contract, with Mercury Records, other, groups to remember, The Strangers, the Questions, The Mustangs, the Electones, The Boneshakers, The Beethovens, the dappers, the Atlantics, the Victors, no Im not makeing them up as I go,

Thanks Atarah, Billy Drinkwater ( Billy Bean ) is the one standing next to Tommy at the back, I think the chap in the middle is called McCormicke, I was friends with his brother Chris, there grandfather was a plumber in Clayton. Dont get too carried away Mez. I dont think Billy was in the Sundowners though. It would be great if you could get Tommy on here to give us more information on the Accy legend of Tommy Franks.

Re: coronation street girls
Janice Battersby = Vicky Entwistle
I went to junior school (Hippings Methodist , Ossy) and Rhyddings with Vicky. She was a year below me. They lived up Hawthorn Avenue whilst Vicky was at Rhyddings. We all used to hang about in the park. Vicky was very slim and petite during her school years :D She often shops in Accrington Asda when she is over this end. My mum bumps into her a lot and fame hasnt got to her head, she is still really down to earth .. |

Re: coronation street girls
Well she definitely lived on the corner of Hawthorn Ave, but their bungalow was on Yew Tree Drive when she used to chase me home from Church shouting she loved me.
|
Re: coronation street girls
Sorry lads is that up Fern Gore or is it west end i know the addresses but cannot place them.
|
Re: coronation street girls
Yew Tree Drive leads from Hawthorn Avenue to High Street, and is just behind Rhyddings Park and a bit to the north.
She definitely lived on Yew Tree because her Mum Maureen was my Sunday School teacher, and I was her helper, and had to go to her house a lot to plan the lessons. |
Re: coronation street girls
Jimmi Ive sent you a PM mate.

Re: coronation street girls
Julie aka Hayley does an awful lot for Accrington, she supports Maundy grange which does alot of helping the needy. She supports the East Lancs Advocacy too which is based in accy. She does other stuff too, cant remember,so evevn tho she may not recieve an oscar anytime soon, she should be applauded and i think she does deserve a place in the hall of fame.
Dominic Brunt plays paddy the vet in emmerdale, he's from accy, ive got a brill pic of him sprawled out unconscious on the floor, surrounded by beer cans, shall use it to bribe him one day! |
Re: coronation street girls
Dominic Brunt was in the same year at Moorhead High School with the already mention Julie Hesmondhalgh and Mina Anwar. I was in some classes with his brother, Patrick.
Jim Bowen was also a teacher there and also lived in my old street, Queen Elizabeth Crescent. Now, I would hardly class myself as famous, but I have done a few quiz shows in the last 10 years, meeting such hosts as Anne Robinson, Richard Whiteley and William G Stewart. |
Re: coronation street girls
You must have been in the year below me at Moorhead, Mikebuk.

Re: coronation street girls
My wife goes on about the time she saw 'Paddy from Emmerdale' in Whiteheads in Rishton a couple of years ago. This thread explains it.
|
Re: coronation street girls
I'll add this to the girl's thread, since it's fictional.
Jack Walker (character), landlord of the Rovers Return (1937 -1970). Born Accrington 1900, died Derbyshire 1970. 'The son of an Accrington vet, John Walker, or Jack as he preferred to be called, was born in 1900. He grew up in Accrington with his brothers Jim and Arthur Walker but later found work in Weatherfield, where he had a romance with Effie Spicer. During the Depression, Jack met high-aspiring factory worker Anne Beaumont. They fell in love and got married in 1937, buying the tenancy of the Rovers Return Inn shortly afterwards, running the pub together.' Jack Walker - Corriepedia - Coronation Street, UK soap opera |
