Let's Get That Goblin Clock Back, Everyone!!!
Anybody wishing for the return of that hideous, yet intriguing piece of Accrington memorabilia, please oh please could you just type a little something here and I'll see if I can talk some sense into the Arndale Management!!!!
For those of you who have never seen or don't remember the clock... well believe you-me; this thing is well worth a butchers! Remember guys, I need numbers, or I won't have a leg to stand on! Regards, Sam Meek. |

I want the clock back too, and it really saddened me when it was taken down as I always loved looking at it as a child, it wasn't too often I managed to see it go off and I always thought it was wonderful, never seen anything like it! |

If there is possibly anything you can do to get it back more power to your elbow. Do an AccyWeb search and you'll find we have had threads on the subject before. A few years ago the Observer even reported that we'd saved it! (Unfortunately nobody seemd to have told the Arndale people.) |

I have not taken my grandchildren to accrington precinct because the clock is no longer there, there is not much else to interest them in accy so I usually shop without taking them, I used to come up from Bury with the kids to see the clock, and was very annoyed to find it gone one day, get the clock back sam please.

God yes, Accy town centre could do with as much as possible to bring in local people.
Besides, everyone used to just meet 'under the clock'. Was soo much easier. I'm actually wondering if any childhood sweethearts met on a first date under the clock, there would be a nice Google Page Ranking thing for ya. Unfortunately the only person I still see that I ever met there, was me father and I dont think that counts lmao x |

it should never have been removed in the first place, was always a fair number in arndale on the hour with kiddies etc to see, would be interesting to see how arndale takings have changed since its removal? though thats obvious to me cos many premises have closed or changed ownership since its removal. no wonder the bloody towns dying with clowns like this.:( its a knocking bet that certainly contributed.

I have just had my first visit back to Accy for 5 years and went to have a look at the clock in the Arndale centre as it has give my family plenty of fun on our visits but see it has gone...what happened to it and I will support any campaign to have it back. Also what has happened to the market..was there no demand any more for all the stalls that used to be there!!

Although I wasn't living back here then, I liked the clock, and it certainly seemed to attract more people into the town than the pushy Sky floggers who currently inhabit the space now, who most people seem to avoid like the plague.

Could look good in the new suggested square. Seems best way, if you want it back, could be to mention it to Urbed, the people who did the Masterplan for Accrington, as seemingly they like quirky things like this. |

The "dome" in the Arndale was made for the clock and so it should be returned. as far as I am aware, its just in the "basement" of the Arndale.

Everything eighties, which is when the clock was introduced, is back in fashion.
Shoulder pads, big hair, recession obliterating glamour, so bring back the clock! I can't think of anything else Accy has had in recent times that seems to hold such warm public affection. |

Nevermind creating a mutil-million pound 'continental' square in front of the Market Hall, with fountains squirting water up your jacksie as you walk through that dark wind tunnel, any politican who returned the clock would ensure maximum publicity and interest for the town, and all for a relatively small cost.

Just to remind people - The "Father Time" clock was designed by Andy Plant, after he won BB2's "Great Egg Race" in 1986. The sculpture centres around a globe made from a welded steel frame covered with a beaten aluminium skin, the land masses standing out in relief. On the top of the world sits a sleeping Father Time on a bicycle. Approaching the quarter hour, a little schoolboy slowly creeps out from the top of the world, aiming to swipe Father Time's alarm clock. But the old man stirs and the schoolboy retreats. Then, on the hour, Father Time wakes to his ringing alarm, and sets off on his bike. As he begins, he rises up into the Arndale Centre's feature dome on a cloud followed by two flying cherubs. At the same time, the world begins to spin and opens to reveal a fun band playing "Rock Around the Clock" on drums, accordion, maraccas and tambourine. The performance over, the world closed and Father Time returned to the top of the globe and his slumbers.

I see the guy who started the thread hasnt been back, would have been nice to be updated.
Personally i loved the clock. when my kids were all small they loved it too. it was my few minutes of peace whilst out shopping lol ... I did give accy a bit of individualty although in my younger days the clock on Peel st was the meeting place for everyone. hehehe . Incidently what is accys meeting place now ? |

The only problem now is that HBC don't have any say in the Arndale centre, if you remember that nice Mr Slynn sold the lease, it would be down to the owners to bring it back, which might take some arm twisting to say the least.:rolleyes:

If it was removed before the council signed away the Arndale lease, then it will still be council property. So when was it removed? |

I was always told that the clock, once taken down, was just in the "cellars" of the Arndale. Now the cafe has been gone for ages, and there are just bits of stalls on its site, why cant the clock go back in the position which was created for it, i.e. the dome? Who could find out if its still "under our feet".

Got a very quick reply from Bill Huntly who confirmed it is owned by the Arndale, and to ring the Manager there, Zain Kiyani (is that a male or female ?), to find where it is now. Will try later.
Suspect, as mentioned before, will still be stored there. Think the issue was the cost of repair ? |

On Tues I was helping out, as a volunteer, at the Museum in the Market stall. I met a lovely gentleman who was telling me that his firm were involved in the setting up of the clock (the hydraulics side of things). He knew all about the clock being stashed away under The Arndale and he reckoned it WOULDNT be that expensive to get it up and running again. I took his telephone number. You just never know ........... :-)
