Accrington should have a museum
Me thinks its time to start a thread going on this subject.
More and more folk are now being asked if they feel we should have a museum in Accrington. OF COURSE WE SHOULD, we have to show our kids how this town came about! We need somewhere to record about our Accrington Pals, our famous football team, our industries that produced goods which went world wide i.e. NORI bricks, Ewbank sweepers, E.J.Riley snooker tables etc. We should have photos showing the men who left their mark in this town! The more folk talk about it, the more chance we may have. An article has been printed in the new free magazine, "ACORN COMMUNITY NEWS", the 2nd edition of which should be popping through doors now in the Hyndburn area. Please take a moment to read it. |
Re: Accrington should have a museum
Groove thinks this is an excellent idea Atarah...but he thinks we may struggle in the current economic climate.

Re: Accrington should have a museum
Totally behind you Atarah, as you know.
It's a disgrace a town such as Accrington hasn't it's own museuem, to record and display it's proud, and important heritage. If you succeed in making this happen you deserve a brass plaque with your name on it, acknowledging your fight to make it a reality. |

Re: Accrington should have a museum
I think everyone would be in support of a Local History Museum. How to go about getting it is the problem. Using a small space within the Town Hall or Haworth to exhibit (as has been discussed previously on here) just wouldn't be large enough imo. But at the same time, finding finance for any sole purpose building would be a challenge to put it mildly.
I've no experience in this sort of thing, but getting some local councillors on board, someone to spearhead the campaign, and applying for lottery funding seems to be the way these things work. |
Re: Accrington should have a museum
Groove thinks you only have to look at the number of empty/redundant premises in Accrington so finding a suitable location should'nt be a problem...He also thinks that a museum would be somewhat a visitor atraction and would entice more people to visit the town in a tourist capacity...Groove thinks this matter should be brought up to the council/powers that be etc and could eben put Accrington on the map as in Ossy mills. Groove would support this idea wholeheartedly and commends Atarah for her logical, forward thinking.

Well Accrington does have one of sorts, Haworth Art Gallery, which indeed is well known for its collection of Tiffany Glass, if there are people who haven't made a visit to this fine place, I can recommend it

If money was no object this might have done the trick. Obviously a pipe dream.

A SPECIAL INVITATION TO INTERESTED FOLK
Tuesday 1st November 2011, at the Peel Park Hotel, Turkey Street, Accrington. 7.15ish for a 7.30 start A few folk have decided to get together and form a group re getting a museum back into our town. We intend to meet at The Peel Park Hotel next Tues and at this meeting we should, at the very least, agree a name for the group and appoint a Chair, a Secretary and a Treasurer. WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE PART OF IT? Please let me know if you would like to attend. WE NEED YOU! |

Best of luck Atarah. it's a great idea and I'm with you all the way. Sorry I can't make the meeting (doubly so as it's in a real ale pub and I'm a Camra member) as I live in Morecambe and don't have transport but I would like to register my support.
By the way I think any museum should be in or near the town centre to bring visitors in. Haworth Park is nice but it's a bit out of the way especially if like me you don't drive. Good luck wih the project. Sue |

Sadly the Town Hall, which contains our visitor and information centre, is now closed at the weekend, due to the cuts we're all living with. So it sadly seems the possibility of a town centre museum is remote. I'm really hoping to be there, just as a supporter, if there's anything you'd like to be made known, if you send me a message I'll do my best to pass on any suggestion or thoughts you might like to add. |
Re: Accrington should have a museum
Thanks Garinda but there's nothing more I want to say just now, just add my support.
I do however have one or two things I think should be in a museum, more as archive than for display probably. For intance I have a collection of letters written by my great grandfather to his family in 1930. He owned trotting horses (the ones where the jockey sits in a little cart behind - we did have some cups he won but I think my dad must have sold them). Anyway times were hard and he took some of the horses out to New Zealand to try and sell them. They went on a liner andi think a couple of other men went too. The letters describe going through the Panama Canal and his unsuccessful travels around NZ trying to sell the horses. They are often written in pencil on whatever paper was to hand. He was not a very literate man (he was a fish merchant) but his love for his family and his longing to go home shine through. Sadly he died suddenly on Christmas Eve 1930 aged only in hie early fifties and was buried in NZ but he was later exhumed and taken home. My father gave me the letters a few years ago before he died and I was very moved when I read them. I had always understood that he went to NZ to buy horses, not sell them but I think that story must have been put about so it did not seem that the family needed money. I think the story would make a good radio programme or short book but I can't do it. Anyway I think the letters might be of interest to a museum. Cheers Sue |
Re: Accrington should have a museum
Susie. I advuise that you contact your local (Lacastyer) branch of the Lancashire Family History Association. They are interested in publishing family material such as this.
Garinda - Please do not go into the Peel Park wearing that turban. It could get Atarah going and start a trend. |

Not easy ...can't just say... 'that building' would be great... yes, but most are privately owned, etc., and would have to be bought. Even H.B.C. owned buildings would be difficult for them to hand it over for a museum as funding would be needed ...not easy to extract from them in this period of cut backs. Any wealthy benefactors out there ? Thanks for your story of your great grandad. See! Amazing what people come up with. :) Dang, can't make the meeting tomorrow... have another.. :( |
Re: Accrington should have a museum
We now have a new group in Hyndburn, hoping to get a Museum/Heritage centre off the ground.
IT IS BEING CALLED HYNDBURN HERITAGE and COMMUNITY GROUP The first meeting, where we hope to have lots of folk attend, is to be held at THE PEEL PARK HOTEL, Turkey Street, ACCRINGTON on MONDAY 28th NOVEMBER, 2011 - 7.15 for 7.30 start Now that we have an official name, we can really get "stuck in". It will NOT be easy, we know that, but, we are dedicated, enthusiastic and "raring to go". We would LOVE to have as many folk as possible to turn up to support us and hopefully, join our group Please put this date in your diary - 28.11.2011 at 7.15ish. |

Re: Accrington should have a museum
Just wanted to share with you a piece of good news – although we may have appeared to have been ‘quiet’ since we last communicated in November, we have in fact been hard at work.
We have visited other heritage museums which have been started by ‘enthusiasts’ like ourselves, one of which was formed in the 1970’s and is still going strong. (Whitworth Museum, you should go, its marvellous! Only opens Tues 7.30-9.30 and Sat afternoons!) We have met with members of the committee of the latter who have helped us and answered some of our many tough questions with honest, and often tough, answers. We have, since 11.00am today, been offered two units on the balcony of Accrington Market Hall, in what used to be Tilly’s Treats and the vacant unit next door. We hope to ‘open our doors’ to the public by end of Feb, or perhaps beg March. In the meantime we need to share this good news with our online supporters and would like to appeal to the public for anything they have dating up to the 1980s that they are willing to loan/donate to us to exhibit. So, if you have anything in your cupboard, cellars, that COULD be of interest to us, and you dont want it, please remember us! More details will follow as we have them. Thanks |

It's true - there's no odder sod than Retlaw.
There is sense in what he is saying, that there are a lot of pitfalls and difficulties in mounting an exhibition. I have been a museum curator and were it not for the professional help I got from the county museum people I would have been up the creek without a paddle. |
Re: Accrington should have a museum
That's fantastic news!
It's a crime a town with such an important history, doesn't have some sort of museum, to record and celebrate that history. Given the economic climate it's a triumph this is getting off the ground. Although what's happened is probably down to the hard work of a group of people, really this is down to the vision, and steely determination of one person. Bloomin' well done Atarah. What you've achieved, through grit, and a refusal to be fobbed off, is heroic in my eyes. |

Really interesting stuff about Accy in the war, and lots of more general things, showing how people used to live. Very nice, friendly people, some of whom were dressed in period costume, including a very striking Land Girl, who were kept very busy talking to people about the exhibits. Was told what's on show is but a small part of what's in the collection. So new exhibits will be shown in the future. Accrington is a town with a proud history, which deserves some sort of museum to show off the many interesting things it has. Thankfully people will now have somewhere to donate things of interest to Accrington, which may otherwise have been sent to the tip. Congratulations to all who have worked hard to make this happen, and well done to Hyndburn B.C. for offering their full support, so Accrington once again has some sort of museum. |

There are lots of things that will probably be shown at a future date, which will hopefully be of interest.
I was lucky enough to be taken by Atarah, on one of her early reccies, and was thrilled to see lots of things relating to the Peel Institute/Town Hall. Beautiful, hand coloured drawings and plans, and lots of original samples, such as mosaics, before the final designs were commissioned for the building. Fascinating stuff, which deserves to be properly curated, and seen by the public. |

In recent times I have mentioned that there was a Marshall St up by the hospital and that its name was changed in the 1930s. There is a Marshall St in Huncoat. I think the connection with both is the owner of the land, Rev Charles Whitaker of Simonstone Hall. I am enquiring as to who Mr Marshall was.

MUSEUM GROUP ON THE MOVE
Although moving into the upstairs premises of the Arndale Centre has been "talked about" - the group have now been offered the chance of bigger premises in the Arndale Centre, in what was H Samuels jewellers premises. This will happen fairly soon. This means MORE ROOM to hopefully have some good LOCALLY CONNECTED DISPLAYS. So, the question is, does anyone have anything locally connected i.e. to E J Rileys, to Howard & Bullough's, to Blake's Rams, to Ewbank - to "anything" from our industrial past! Does anyone have any school connected items? All we ask is "Please Think Museum" and anything that may be of interest, would you let us know please? |
Re: Accrington should have a museum
I'm an Archivist and grew up in Accy and am back temporarily 'between jobs' (unfortunately have never been able to find one in my field round here!) and am so glad to read about your efforts to get a museum up and running! Last time I was in the Arndale I saw all the empty units and thought it was a bit of a missed opportunity the council didn't take the chance to subsidise something like a museum which would bring people back in. I've read about all kinds of pop-up and shop based museums in some heritage mags and journals and they are always usually really successful.
Trust the community to be more on the ball! Do the opening times on the previous page still stand? Would love to come down and have a look round before I unfortunately must move again for the next job. Is there a mailing list or something of that description to garner the support of the nameless majority when necessary? Would like to subscribe and keep up with goings on as I won't be living too far away! |
