Primark..do you or dont you?
Primark is one of my favourite clothes shops, with all the hype recently about slave labour in India and other foreign countries do you really care about where these clothes come from?
i dont, yes i know i should do, we all should really but when it comes to budgeting our brass can we really afford to care where our clothes come from? i'm off to Primark in Preston after school by the way, anyone want to join me on the train ? :D:D:D:D |
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
I've never been to one of these stores:(
Not that I wouldn't mind going, just never get round to it, it's not somet I think about |
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
The missus loves that place, me, i can`t stand it, when i`m dragged anywhere near the one in Manchester its like a scene from Dawn Of The Dead, women in trances staggering around under the weight of clothes in their arms ,must agree though, we should be right on and boycott these places but with the credit crunch you just can`t, anyway most clothes are made in sweatshops whether it be Primark or M & S, the sports wear certainly is, Nike ,Adidas etc and as are a lot of very expensive designer goods..........and i`d say by the amount of people who pass through their doors most people don`t care how it was made:D
|
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
The thing about Primark using indian labour is that they are giving these people jobs and allowing them to support their families......and remember what seems like a paltry wage to us, is acceptable to them because their cost of living is different.......we couldn't survive on this wage in THIS country....but they can because their cost of living is different.
I think if you are on a very tight budget, then you buy what you can afford.....where ever it comes from...if you are not well off then you can't afford the luxury of fine principles. (now duck and wait for negative karma) |
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
I agree with you Margaret. If people in India were paid equivalent of wages here it would put the cost of living up and other people there would suffer. As long as they are paid a decent wage for the country they live in and have decent working conditions then that's fine by me. There is no comparison between wages here and wages there.

Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
the simple answer is every person has to " Cut Their Cloth" n the economics of running a house/family take precedent. anyone who thinks otherwise is braindead.
|
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
Spot on. Be it cheap food, clothes whatever is needed to keep the family fed and clothed. Hell, if they did smart price water, I'd sign up to that as well (well maybes not the really cheap stuff cos I dont like floaty bits pmsl ;))
Saying that, dont really like Primark, when I have been, i didnt really like the lads clothes for my sons age, got some lush underwear though, and the little girls stuff was fab. Not sure spiderman would appreciate a sex change though. |
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
Have been in primark twice both in preston. Havent bought anything from there, because didnt see anything i liked.
|
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
Primark is great for girls clothes, my sister loves it (she has 2 girls) I like it , can get the odd decent thing but no too keep on the boys fashins there, not my thing. I have bought a few bits for myself from there, especially accessories and underwear, there great
|
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
I've never been to Primark. Wasn't there one supposed to be opening in Blackburn some time ago or did I dream it?
|
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
Im hooked on our new prinmark because not only is there a good selection of clothes the prices are right too. :alright:
Also 3 wonderful floors of goodies to rummage through:D Hadnt really given a thought to who makes em but TBH MP is spot on with what she says. Wasnt there a similar thing with GAP a few years back ? all ado about kids being used to work long hrs making these clothes . |
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
I used to make all my own clothes but when the sweatshops opened up it became cheaper to buy readymade.
There is talk about that the price of clothing is due to rocket soon, due to rising transport costs and the conversion of cotton fields to growing biofuels. Sewing machine sales are increasing. |
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?

I agree MR I can honestly see people making their own stuff again. Wish i knew how to use a damn sewing machine lol. Give me the old Curtain ones at wills fabrics and Im away but stick a domestic one in front of me and im hopeless lol,.:D |
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
I never had a fancy gadget machine - going forwards and backwards stitching is all that I needed.

Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
I LOVE Primark!!! I've been to loads of stores Preston, Blackpool, Liverpool, Manchester. Blackpool store is by far the best. They do the best shoes!

There was supposed to be a Primark opening in Blackburn where the old Woollies corner was but something went wrong with the redeveloping plans so don't know what's happening now.
|
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
I LOVE PRIMARK!!!! I have been to preston's and I have been to the Blackpool one. I have to say, Blackpool's win every time. Preston one is like a jumble sale, mostly the clothes are crammed on to a rail or shoved on the floor!!
Blackpool's has more floors, everything is in order and all neat and tidy. I got most of our holiday clothes from there!! I love it :D |

ive been to primarks in.....Blackpool, Wigan, Leeds Preston, Manchester, Birkenhead, Bolton, ,Wakefield, Newcastle and Northampton, i seem to find a Primark in nearly all the towns i go to, the one in Bolton is crap as is the one in Wakefield
|
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
Love the Blackpool Primark and got some real bargains too.
|
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
Blackpool primark is the best - and by the time you have paid petrol and parking fees to go to the others then it is worth getting on the train and going to the blackpool one - and have a day out on top of it
it has a whole large floor per section massive much more choice and it was really tidy when i last went - not like a jumble sale which many are |
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
Iv never been!!
which is the nearest? |
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
I lived very near the first one in London.
Are the goods produced by people on very low wages? Yes. Did I shop there? Yes I did. |

lol yeah i have looked at oxfam online
- if you dont want to trundle through the one item clothing ( which may not even fit you when you get it) then there is fair trade fashion i took a peek at the skirts very nice, prices start at an unbelievable £60.00 :O so the train to blackpool again i think :D |

Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
Clothes don't seem to be made in the UK any more. Certainly clothes from M&S and Mothercare are all made abroad.
Whether they are produced in reputable factories abroad or cobbled together on Pat Pong Market I don't know. I wouldn't knowingly buy clothes that had been made using child labour in foreign sweat shops. |
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
the nearest Primark is Preston or Bolton, whichever way you wanna go, but i'd recommend Preston NOT Bolton
|
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
lol am of to primark on Saturday the long way, tosh says they no you by your first name with me going that many times lol:p
|
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
I tried the one in Plymouth when I visited my daughter last year and hated it. The prices were fine and I did have fun helping my eldest grand-daughter in the teenage section but for stuff for me it was a nightmare.
All that pushing and shoving, no, never again. |

Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
Ive been , bought a few stuff from there , really suprised how cheap it is! You can buy a new jumper in there for around £8 and then see the same one in another designer shop for £35. I know which one i would want relevant to who makes them!
However men who have never been primark, BE AWARE! If you go with a woman ,dont expect to be out in 2 seconds , you might aswell bring a tent and camp outside because you`l be in there a bloody long time! :D Haha! But the good thing its cheap so the bank isnt broke :) |

A month later took my grandaughter to Manchester for her Christmas present, was freezing and raining. Although I had a small cardigan on, was still very cold. She likes to go in Primark so went in with her .. I grabbed the first cardigan I could find @ £8 and was warm again. I must admit, it washes like a dream and of decent quality, even though it is green and black stripes and makes me look like a bumble bee with stomach ache. Will definitely look in there again. You got a lovely jacket Mez. |
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?

I will NEVER,EVER,EVER stop shopping at Primarni/Primada as i like to call it :D
I shopped there before it had the millions of fans it has today....we had a Primark on Margate high street and i have been buying from them for years. I recently said to a mate i dont care how may people slog for hours for a few pence-as long as i get my cheap, very long lasting Primark clothes (i still have clothes that i bought from Primark 5 years ago!!!) i seriously am not bothered. *waits for negative karma* :p |
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
handbags from primark are ace, i cant go in without coming out with at least one, that and sunglasses
|
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
Definitely looks like I am gonna have to make an effort to go over:D
|
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
I can honestly say I have never bought anything from Primark. I have looked and to be honest even if the stuff was free I would not wear it. I have had staff come into work with their cardigans unraveling and ask where they got the item from the answer is inevitably the P word.
I much prefer clothes that last sand last last, I dont have the time or the energy to go shopping every week. On an ethical note I notice that many people on hear are easing their consciences by talking about 'people being paid pennies in sweatshops' I hate to bring in reality but it is children being paid pennies in sweatshops and often loosing finger or worse before they are 10 year old |
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
went to Primark in Preston yesterday and Primark in Manchester today, bought a new pink bag for £1, 2 pink stripey summer tops £1.50 each got Reece some shorts for £2.50, myself some new red pumps for £4 and some nice 'bedroom' things too ;) and a few other bits, oh how i love that shop :D

It's useful for people who don't really know what they want and don't have any mates (or have a partner who dislikes shopping) to tell them that "yes/no their bum does/doesn't look big in this". I always buy more things that I don't really need when I shop with a friend. I don't think Primark and Bon Marche have any need of this service, as their customers generally know what they want, ie anything so long as it's under a fiver:alright: |

Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
There is one at preston, think its in fishergate shopping centre, decent sized one
|
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
yeah its in the Fishergate(just as you get off the train), they have one in Bolton too (but that one is crap)
|
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
I cannot begin to tell you how much I hate Primark. It is disorganised in layout, the clothes always look creased and tatty on their hangers and it's normally full of smelly people when I go in. Therefore, I don't go in any more.
I can understand families on a budget shopping there but, it's not for me. If I ever have to set foot in the place again, it will be too soon. |
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
so it is a bit like parkerfranks in the old days:rolleyes:
|
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
My sister and a good mate of mine have the patience to shop at Primark regularly and always dress in very smart clothing which costs virtually nothing. Regrettably, the staff are clearly being paid very little and as a result the one in Preston looks like a jumble sale.
The one time I ventured in it also seemed to be full of clusters of extremely rude people who thought nothing of shoving me out of the way to look at something, presumably to resell on their market stall. Nothing against the quality of their clothing but it's not for me. |
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
Quote:
I think that is a little unfair on the staff. The are constantly refolding and handing up the clothes that shoppers drop on the floor and leave in a mess after rummaging through the clothes. I blame the shoppers not the staff. |

i hear ya on the asda trolly issue the ignorant morons even go as far to let the trollys bang into other peoples cars and walk away, one particular ingnoramouus got a shock when i booted one back into his legs when i saw it heading for my car and had teh audacity to look at me as though i had done somthing wrong but after explaing my theory on how far up a rectumn an asda trolly could be shoved he went on his way :)
as much as i hate having to find a quid coin for trollys i think accy asda should fit them as not only do you get morons leaving trollys around teh car park but peopel have started taking teh trollys home then letting them go down the street when they have unloaded tehir shopping banging into cars along the way.I couldntbelieve it when i saw a young chineeses couple pushing two large trollys full of shopping down blackburn road lol |
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
But if the trolleys are all put back then the trolley boys will be out of a job as they will have little to do.
I have to leave my trolley otherwise I will be responsible for putting my son out of work... :D And the pound system is easily bypassed with a token on a keyring, they easily pull out... ;D I find that women are especially lazy when shopping, always leaving stuff they have changed their minds on anywhere, in the supermarket they even leave frozen food on ordinary shelves so it defrosts & cannot be put back in the freezer. I always take it back to where I got it, it only takes a minute & I'm likely to se something else I might want on the trip :D |
Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
Here you put a 1 Euro coin in to get a trolly - you get it back when you return the trolly to the trolly bay. You can also get plastic discs from some supermarkets which work just the same. No lost trolleys around town. Works very well here

Re: Primark..do you or dont you?
tesco at haslingden and rawtenstall have a sign up that you cant take trolleys past that point .. it locks the wheels so you cant push it ..
When i was up in Grangemouth at christmas and new year .. we were stood waiting for the bus back up home which was close to the asda .. and they have the same system there .. and a woman and her daughter (20 ish spugs knew the family) had been to asda and had quite a lot of shopping and the daughter was pushing the trolley and refused to carry the bags and was determined that the trolley was going to cross the road and take the shopping to the bus stop .. it was quite funny especially in all the snow and ice we had up there .. problem being though the snow and ice on the path helped her but when it came to crossing the road ..and no snow or ice she couldnt push it across the road as the wheels were locked .. so ended up dragging it across the road .. then mum had to lift the trolley up to get it up onto the other side... |

Using your logic the British public should only be paying production/refining costs for North sea oil and Gas , so why are your prices so high ? because the British Govt. sells the stuff on the free market at the same World prices as OPEC . I'm thinking what you meant to say in your posting is that you in the UK would be paying the similar prices to the US and Canada but for the high fuel pump prices imposed by your Govt. As for us (the US) worrying about the Middle East maybe its time you in the UK took a good hard look in the mirror and faced up to the homegrown threats you in the UK are producing for export . |
