TESCO - new site in Accrington.

Thanks to GypoDec for pointing out to us that "activity" has started on the old college site, near the Railway Station. Its hard to see the full extent of the site as you have to "peep" through "fencing" on the railway station side. The site is MASSIVE, it will be an eye opener when we get to see the whole site cleared.
The first photo is an old view. I have tried to mark the approx. site to give members an idea of where it covers.
The other photos were taken 20th Jan, 2010

lol i cant wait to see how bad blackburn road gets for traffic jams after this is completed yu can barely get past as it is becaue of illigaly parked cars so throwing in extra traffic from tescos isnt going to make things any better

the tescos in ozzy has already cause huge problems but big companies dont seem to have any problems getting things approved by councils, the new one is osy has seen a quiet lane safe for locals to walk down into a double parks speed track and exiting the place is an accident waiting to happen infact a few accidents have occured already

is this one going to be a full sized tesco or one of those mini tesco stores that arnt cheaper than any other shop on the high street

All systems go for new Tesco - News - Accrington Observer
Bear in mind, this is dated Sept 2008.

Going off the size of what can be seen already, I would say its going to be a mega massive one! Good comments you posted accyman about traffic problems. The obvious move will be to make an entry/exit on Scaitcliffe Street as well as on Eagle Street, but with both of these having to get out onto Blackburn Road it must cause terrible traffic problems.

What mystifies me is which route will HGV's take to deliver to the store ? Surely Blackburn Rd - Eagle st is not an option, Scaitcliffe st possibly but would they get under the railway bridge ? The only other option I can see is via Eastgate/Manchester Rd and along Grange Lane. Anyone got a clue ?

well unless blackburn road starts following UK traffic laws and not pakistans i dont think the store will do to well because people will find it much easier to go to asda or drive the extra to blackburn tesco or haslingden tesco if they dont fancy asda unless part of the deal for bringing a tesco to accrington is that the council and teh police do somthing about it and not simply shrug its shoulders and give up trying to enforce the law down there like they did before

yeah but you could polevault to accy's nevermind drive ,if you lived on avenue parade for example it would be a lot less hassle to got to haslingdens tesco even though its twice as far if not three times the distance to travel

im not counting tesco express stores because they arnt cheap infact an item at ossy tesco that cost 54p is 98p at the accy tesco express and when i asked why its because ossy tesco has more competion so they make prices cheaper there which to me is wrong as each store shoud have teh same price throughout its range and prices shoud not be based on what they think they can get away with charging in one particular area over another

Can I just pass on this info. By chance, as I was walking into the Reference Library (which has a new name, cant remember it though) I spotted a large map on the wall by the entrance door. Its dated 1892 and just happens to be more or less about the EXACT area where the new Tesco is gonna be. Its just an ABSOLUTE COINCIDENCE its on the wall. It proves that the site of Tesco is .. absolutely bang on the site of all the track and buildings etc of our lovely old Accrington railway station. It shows where the waiting rooms were, the parcels office, the refreshment rooms. It shows where the Goods Shed was, behind the wall which now faces the front of The Globe centre.
Pop in and have a look, its rather interesting.

The security guard on this site is hilarious, bumped into him as he was walking around the site last night and got talking to him. He obviously knew we were travellers an was asking were our caravans were.

We told him tht a family of romanies had been evicted from the site a few months earlier and he kept asking who Victor was,..... we found this absolutely hilarious lol suppose the alcohol helped make it funnier.

Their new employee's will be the ones made redundant by the shop closures, and most of them will be part time jobs just above the minimum wage. Britcliffe's gang were bamboozled with the promise of the new jobs.

Tesco say Accrington will be a `medium` sized store. and in comparison Haslingdon is classed as a `medium` sized store.

Seems odd.

I thought demolition/building was well under way, and the new Tesco was due to open in June of this year.

Well, if they had attached it to the Arndale (as Sainsburys intended to), they would have looked at it differently. If Morrisons are showing a serious interest, this may be Tesco's way of keeping them out.

Keep taking 'em Atarah .. that way we will know if building is going on for a Tesco on this site.

I think we need an explanation from the council chambers on this one !!

In retrospect though, I suppose it will be years before this plan ever gets off the ground, so Tesco are looking up front showing an interest to move in there as and when, providing their Accrington store on Eagle Street has proved a success.

Well, to say we thought the Tesco store may be on "hold", there was a heck of a lot of activity today around 4.00pm. Plenty of heavy machinery moving brickwork and rubble around, and... lots of new portacabins being dropped into place. And they have also started putting a blue gauze "covering" behind the green netting. Is that to stop people such as me taking piccy's? - but ... I can still see off the top of the railway bridge! Tee hee

It was a whole block not just the wall, more like logical planning, and utilising existing buildings, cost effective, yes. That wall would have collapsed with out the support of the remainder of that block, may even have been listed.

I was being told yesterday that this isn't going to be a Tesco but a new Train Station, it also appears that there are no Tesco signs outside this site, I got this from a friend who stopped to have a look yesterday

The Tesco site is on the old college and council buildings site. The new train station is being built on the train stations former car park.

Tell your friend to look at the HI-Viz jackets of some of the workmen, they will find the word Tesco on them :D

Now I have a fabulous birds-eye view of all that is going on at this site.
I was sad to see all the hazel and baby oak trees along the edge of the site were chopped down, (weeks ago now). Not sure why this was necessary but I suppose women may feel less vulnerable walking from the station to Scaitcliffe St.

What I'd like to know is what all the machinery is there. I have worked out (I think) that a machine that sounds like a huge food processor is actually breaking up large bits of concrete into smaller bits which is then fed into another machine that chews them even smaller.......
.....But what is that huge blue 'periscope' thing?
It doesn't look like an normal crane and there is a repetitive CHUG CHUG CHUG sound...Is it this blue thing? Or a large drill? And if so why would they be drilling holes when there must be sewage pies etc there already?

There is some " stone crushers " to break up the old rubble .
The drill thing is to make holes for long R.s.j.'s to go in as upright for the building , before they are concreted into place.

The drill thing is probably a pile driver ( don't say anything Accyman ;) )

Latest piccy's, taken this morning. Part of it resembles Blackpool's Big Dipper at the moment!
Last photo taken from railway bridge, showing just how near it is to the platform.

I've just had a quick look at the piccy's and made a comparison with an existing Tesco of the same basic design I know here in London. You will all be pleased to know that there will be one manned checkout open 3am-5am every other tuesday, and at all other times everything be barcode swipe and self checkout.

Have fun.

I never thought I'd hear this but Tesco, Nelson is shutting, only a couple of years old, the car park was possibly the worst design in the World but somebody has dropped a xxxxxxx big style

It means it is the largest type of store in the Tesco brand, basically it stocks more or less everything they do. I think the Blackburn one is a standard superstore

I think the 'EXTRA' moniker is only used when a bung was paid, to ensure planning consent was given.

'This means the decision in favour of the store made by Hyndburn Council’s Planning Committee in June will stand and a further inquiry will not be needed.'

'Before then it needs to conclude an agreement with Hyndburn Council to pump nearly £1M into the regeneration of Accrington town centre.'
All systems go for new Tesco - Accrington Observer

Before people get too giddy about the million quid, just remember that the new roundabout near the Britannia pub in Ossy cost over £700,000.

So when the tumbleweed is blowing through the deserted streets, of the once thriving town, a million pounds isn't going to fund that many flower towers.
