Have a look at google earth to see what I mean.

Looks like it may have been a spur off the canal.

Do you know what happened to the stand jaysay? I was unloading a tanker at Mansfield one day and the operator saw the Accrington on the cab door and told me Mansfield FC had bought the old Stanley stand. Any truth? Twas about 1974.

Err...I think you're looking at the spur by Emerson & Renwicks. This is a couple of hundred feet below canal level, about 200yds S.W. of the Dunkenhalgh:

Wasn't the wooden stand you see on the old photos Gremlin, that was definitely taken down and burned on sight as it was virtually all wood, there was some metal girders in it which were removed my a chap who's now my next door neighbour. Not sure but there was another stand on the burnley road side of the ground, which was a white elephant really of which many say that the purchase of was the start of the slippery slop to all their problems, I think it was bought originally bought from Aldershot, and was sold, but to whom I don't know, could well have been Mansfield Gremlin

Oh but she does. She told me about the dig in the first place and I was only with her yesterday when she said "filming" has taken place this very week. OK, it may just be on behalf of the Uni in Preston, but ......

And .. if you go up and look .... 3 small sites have been "ear marked".
Watch this space!

Maybe these undergraduates need to learn 'how to dig' by practicing in places where there isn't anything valuable they might damage;)

An interesting link for those who were following this thread.

"The results will also be published in the forthcoming volume of the international journal World Archaeology which will have an archaeology of sport theme linked to the 2012 Olympics."
