Re: Accrington Claim to fame
Alex Higgins was Irish, of course isn't there now a younger player of the same name mius fag and pint? he used to play up the Elite but I don't remember him actually living in Accy. I went to school with the guy that was the Drummer in black grape. Is now doing some stuff with Peter Gabriel. Then theres me! When I came out here I was a nanny for a famous canadian singer's brother!

Re: Accrington Claim to fame
Alex did live in Hyndburn for a while, back around the early 70s if I remember correctly. Wasn't he a resident player at one of the snooker halls before he became well known?
Remember seeing him regularly around pubs in the area anyway. |
Re: Accrington Claim to fame
Well I'll be blown! you learn something new everyday.
What about famous people you've met? Anyone any tales? |
Re: Accrington Claim to fame
Higgins lived in Blacburn and used to catch the 46 from the boulevard most afternoons around 3 in the afternoon to Accy

Are you not thinking of Dennis Taylor who used to live in Wilpshire? He used to play regularly around the area. ::) |
Re: Accrington Claim to fame
No...Taylor lived in Blackburn as well but there was no snooker club in Blacburn as there was in Accy (Alwsays above a Burtons shop..)

Re: Accrington Claim to fame
Mik, the darts player you are thinking about is Ronnie "Rocket" Baxter, currently No.4 in the World, but has now based himself in the South. No one has mentioned Hollands Pies neither, I know its in baxenden but its still Accrington
|
Re: Accrington Claim to fame
Go on then i will ask.. How is Bexenden, Accy ?
|
Re: Accrington Claim to fame
It is Accrington really, just like Church is in Accy and Fern Gore etc
|
Re: Accrington Claim to fame
Boll*cks! Church is not in Accy & never has been - it's documented history precedes that of Accy.......we had our own form of local goverment (i.e. the parish) when Accy was merely a spot on the map, so insignificant that no one could even agree on how to spell it.
Anyway, Church has reached the quarter final of the FA cup, which is further than Stanley has ever been. |
Re: Accrington Claim to fame
Last night there was a documentary on Austrian TV (ORF) which talked about England, and in particular about how much and how often it reains there.
There was a couple on from ACCY - I couldn't believe it!! :o Apparently one night there was a big storm in Accy and the guy heard really big rain drops, when he looked out, his yard was full of apples. They thought it had been raining apples. Acutally the apples had been carried from the trees during by the storm into his yard. According to the documentary, the whole of Accy was covered in apples. Is this a true story? Anybody know whio the couple in the documentary were? Is the story famous back home too? |
Re: Accrington Claim to fame
Apple trees in Accy? I think ORF have just been conned.....

Re: Accrington Claim to fame
November 1984
A garden in East Crescent, Laneside. It was in the local papers and on the local news. Been included in a few docs and science programmes since. Apparently about 300 apples fell in the garden. Accy being covered in apples is an exaggeration. :) |
