Is This Love?

I think I have an admirer, perhaps it could even be a stage further than this, I just don't know. Please, be patient whilst I try to explain.

Those of you that know me understand that I don't have a great deal of time for cats, the house I used to live in had a back garden and I was always complaining about the local cats using it as a litter tray.

I moved to a different house recently and the back yard is completely concreted, low maintenance nowhere for them to use, (great), there is a local cat very nice to look at ginger striped always reminds me of the Cheshire cat from Alice in Wonderland, (I'm sure it has that sort of smile).

When I first moved in it treated me with suspicion always running away when I went out to hang my washing. This past week however, if I just appear at the kitchen window it jumps onto the window sill and says 'hello'.

If I go outside it comes over to me purring away and rubbing itself against my legs, over the past three days it has started leaving me gifts by my back door, a mouse, a young rat and I don't know where it got it from but a young hen chick!

The questions are.... Is this love? What have I done to deserve it? and what can I do to use this sudden attraction to take advantage of the females of my own species?:D

Margaret Pilkington 08-06-2007 12:29

Re: Is This Love?

Yes, Less I think it IS love. Cats are similarly fickle as women are......so if you can get this cat eating out of your hand (metaphorically, that is), then maybe you will have similar success with a lady.
I love cats and would never consider a man who didn't, at least, like cats

And what is the insinuation there I wonder? Any lower and you could tickle the Cheshire cats belly. Imagine doing that to a fellow Accy web member tut tut. You should be ashamed of your self. Just to let you all know, being the softy that I am, one of our members got in touch with me and asked if I would like a kitten, my first reaction was 'no way on earth!' but being the fool that I am it seems it will be ready for me in about 10 days, well what can I do? I'm a sucker for anything soft and furry!

So I might just be asking advise later, be prepared for a confused cat handler.

First piece of advice - don't sit on it! It may curl up and try to imitate a cushion but there the resemblance ends as cushions do not have sharp claws.

Who gave you the idea it was going to be a house cat? I will allow it the freedom of the backyard, (and anyones garden patch that it can find, revenge is sweet!).

Re: Is This Love?

Oh, Less....if you get this kitten please let it into your house as well as your heart......you will be well rewarded (as long as you have a scratching pole that is).

Margaret Pilkington 13-06-2007 08:02

Re: Is This Love?

My hubby was not known as a 'cat lover'....he wasn't exactly a cat hater either......just tolerant of the species. Until a little black kitten walked into our house about 10 weeks after he had had a stroke.....and was in the 'slough of despond'. She transformed his life, made him smile again and pick up the threads of his life and set him on the road to recovery.......something which I could not do.

WillowTheWhisp 13-06-2007 09:10

Re: Is This Love?

Cats have a way of being able to sneak through a door when you are not looking Less.

You may open the door with not a sign of kittykins anywhere in sight but the moment you turn round to close it you will find something small and furry standing behind you.

You may think you have cat-proofed the windows but you'll be surprised. Cats know how to overcome these obstacles.

Go on, be a softy and let it live inside with you.

It has been my constant companion, mainly because I forgot to take it out of my pocket! (Only joking, as I said I won't be reading it, but, because you put the closest that you will ever get to writing in English on the flyer, it has pride and place on my book case. Happiness is being owned by a cat.

Dogs have owners; cats have staff.

Cats are poetry in motion; dogs are gibberish in neutral.

Cats were once worshipped as gods; cats have never forgotten this.

(I hope none of this gets back to my dog.)

Re: Is This Love?

Mr D...if the cat really loves him he will probably find presents of dead mice, frogs, shrews and other assorted wild (but dead) things left on his doorstep.
Cats bury their poo.......if litter trained then, in their litter box.....if not under the neighbours geraniums (not very conducive to good relations).....I would suggest litter is best.

West Ender 14-06-2007 21:24

Re: Is This Love?

I think it was desmond Morris, who thinks he knows everything about animals, who said cats bring prey home because they are trying to teach us how to hunt. Mind you, he also said, "A door is a barrier to a cat." A 3 year old could have worked that one out. :D

I've never minded when the odd, deceased vole has turned up on the doorstep, though my son and daughter-in-law were a bit put out when their 2 elderly cats dragged a seagull through their cat-flap, especially as it was alive. It was rescued and eventually flew off, a bit bedraggled and not a little angry, but it lived to tell the tale.

My eldest daughter has 3 cats, Bianca the ancient white one, who sleeps 22 hours a day, and Bonny and Clyde who are brother and sister. Those 2 will jump from a high surface on to your shoulder, if you point to it, and drape themselves round your neck; very useful in cold weather. You can train cats to do a lot of things but always remember it's a rare cat who will "fetch" like a dog. Throw a stick for a dog and it'll say, "Hang on, I'll get that for you." Throw a stick for a cat and it says, "You threw it away. You fetch it back."

Cats can be very loving and rewarding pets. You don't own them, they own you, but they are loyal and affectionate. If a cat loves you, you are fortunate indeed. :)

I've taken a few but unfortunately they don't show the kitten in it's best light, it has so many subtle colours but only seems to show up as white, which is a shame 'cos it may be a very interesting beast as it grows up.

My daughter had a cat called Clio (note the i instead of e). Clio was the Greek muse of History who fell in love with a young, mortal man - so there you go, Less.

Most of my cats have been male (neutered) but the present incumbent is called Maddie (short for Madonna). All our cats' names seem to have begun with M - Murphy, Max, Marlon and Mortimer - except Timmy. ;)

Whatever you call your kitten, Less, do as Margaret says and get her spayed or you may end up with a houseful of cats. :D

How do I deal with a bully? It's not been in the house 24 hours yet, but already it knows who is the boss, when I'm sat on my computer chair it now climbs up my jeans using it's retractable crampons for grip, (is the pain caused by this supposed to be part of the pleasure of being a cat owner?), it then pushes around the back of me places itself against the back rest and pushes.

Again it is generous with the use of it's claws which ensure I shift my backside so that it can stretch out and fall asleep. It is still only small and I am sat on the last two inches of what used to be a comfortable chair, what will become of me when it is fully grown? will I have to stand up during the times I want to post anything on accyweb?

Yes, she is lovely, but will you please wipe that 'sleep out of her eyes' spoiling her looks !!.. sure somebody on here will tell you how to do it proper like.

My uncle and aunt lived in Barley, the property where Barley Mow is now, lovely little village in the country and they had many cats over the years, probably used for mousing.

Enquired on many occasions (being a curious child see) what were their names? He was a liitle like you Less, with a dry sense of humour, and the reply was always 'Cat'. Thought at the time he was teasing me... but now believe, they never named their cats at all. So had to greet them by 'Hi, Cat, Cat and Cat'

Bath a cat......BATH and cat should never appear in the same sentence.
You would only bath a cat if you were absolutely nuts......and wanted to have your arms and hands shreaded.

Having said that I once homed a stray cat who was mainly white and he used to come in absolutely filthy......now i did bath him a couple of times and he was very good...he didn't bite or try to scratch my eyes out....but he was the exception that proves the rule(or tests the rule).

my 2 new kittys are still just as naughty as ever they are about 7 months old now but trixie still tries to climb up the curtains and nearly pulls the pole down because shes too big! and pixie tries to follow her but shes never made it to the top yet! and trixie thinks shes a dog she drinks from the toilet and the drain outside even though theres clean water there for her!

The terrible two!

mine are good at keeping the flies and spiders at bay they even eat them only they just pound around the house knocking over and breaking stuff while they are trying to catch them! oh the joys eh!

West Ender 25-06-2007 12:26

Re: Is This Love?

You don't need to trim a cat's claws it will do that itself. Get it a scratching post if you like your furniture unshredded. It will sharpen its claws on that and will bite any raggy bits off with its teeth. Alternatively, it may sharpen its claws on you if you decide to bath it. :D

Our cat has had to be bathed a couple of times, due to oily mud, and it was traumatic - for her and for me. She even gets very concerned if she comes in the bathroom and finds a human in the bath. She puts her paws up on the side, gives you a big-eyed look of sheer horror and miaows loudly. Strangely, she doesn't worry if you're in the shower.

Re: Is This Love?

If you start bathing them as kittens they aren't too bad about it. Like Mummiboo said they do get this wicked pout and then a grating growl but it keeps the fleas off.

Same go with clipping the nails. Our cats are mostly outdoor cats and do alot of climbing and such. I find clipping just the end tip off keeps their claws from getting too long.

Also hinders their ability to grab birds in flight and catch up with the "baby" squirrel. Never fear, when the dogs get to playing too rough with them, they can still climb the trees like a rocket!

West Ender 25-06-2007 19:30

Re: Is This Love?

A tip regarding fleas (from noting Brian's post re bathing). Get your kitten used to eating a little garlic in its food every now and then. For some reason fleas hate it and they won't live on a cat with garlic in its blood. Don't give it too often and it's also better to cook it, raw garlic can be harmful.

Margaret Pilkington 25-06-2007 19:44

I squeeze a drop of odourless garlic (from the capsules) into the cats food, and that seems to work too.....and they don't seem to mind eating it.

If it lives it lives, if I die because of lack of blood, will you be as sorry?

Go on, Less, you can't fool me. ;) It's all ready wormed its way into your heart or it wouldn't be there and you wouldn't be bothered.

Now, on the subject of worms.....................:p

We use Frontline to combat fleas. One of our cats hates garlic and if I've eaten anything with garlic she will not speak to me or come anywhere near me - apart from once or twice putting her paw over my mouth to keep it shut.

little story, we had 3 cats when young 1 for each kid, me being eldest had the father to the other 2, mum used to let mine out at last orders every night, n it would go and sit on the doorstep of either Royal Oak, St Johns, Great Eastern,Sydney Street club, or Boars Head, n meet me dad n walk home with him, never got the pub wrong, used to beat the hell out of me:confused:still cant figure it? so if that starts happening Less, you know its love.;)

Here's a suggestion Less, you eat the garlic and maybe it'll keep the cat away from you!!:Banane52:

I'm sat here picturing Uncle Less in a catsuit, trying to teach this poor kitten, so cruelly parted from it's mummy at such a young age, how to catch a mouse.:D

That poor cat. It looked terrified. It may have been just a trick of the light but a few times it did look as if the cat had hurt itself and drawn blood. :(

I think it is just a trick of the light... but I dont understand why anyone would want to put their cat through that. :(

West Ender 28-06-2007 21:59

Re: Is This Love?

I am appalled that anyone could do that to an animal. The cat was obviously terrified and the owner is either very cruel or incredibly stupid - or both.
