I was just thinking of the ones in Ormerod Street in the wall that used to be part of Platts/Bulloughs.

:D I go past there nearly every day and I never really look but I'm sure that what's left of them sort of disappears into the ground. I'm going down tomorrow so I'll try to remember to have a look.

Your right Willow I can remember seeing the workers in the basement like thing when it was Howard and Bulloughs

Re: What Are They?

I suppose it's because the ground rises up and the front of the factory was at ground level but halfway up Ormerod Street it became basement.

Certainly doesn't look to be preserved today when I went past it !
They look like cellar windows to me; maybe the height of the road down onto Hyndburn Rd has changed in the intervening years ?

Could be correct Lindsay... a friend of mine used to do talks on old Accrington with lots of pictures and I was impressed with one that showed such arches as Cashy describes (think may have been the police station ) and was due to the road being raised.
