What sort of bird is this??

been off on one of my 8 mile jaunts today along the canal on my bike...and i came across this rather menacing looking bird, i dont know what it is....can anyone tell me? its not a duck or a swan or a goose

its wings where huuuuuuuuge, an old woman was trying to pass it with her dog but was too scared...till i sauntered upto it on my bike to take a pic, then she passed me rather cautiously |

if you zoom in on my pic (if you can) you will see that it has flappy things on the ends of its wings, kinda like paddles, right at the back, it looks like its stood on them... cant see those on the heron |

I'll go for a cormorant Flashy ... get one on my lodge now and then, they will go into the water and dive down for food, whereby a heron will only hang/wade about on the banking to catch its fish.
Also, you wouldn't have not got anywhere near a heron before it flew off ... very nervous birds. Definitely not a heron... they spot my movement behind my patio door and off they go. |

yeah that explains the flappy bits that look like they are on the end of its wings...i took the pic because i've never seen one on the canal before....i'm off to do another 8 miles again tomorrow, i'll see what funnies i can snap then ;)

Deffo a cormorant. Saw it myself in the water - they look very low down. The curved end of the beak is a giveaway too.
