A question bout Accy Asda

This morning ... well when i got up this afternoon .. i had a leaflet through my door offering a voucher for accy asda for £5 on a christmas savings card .. but this is whats inside of it ...

Dear customer

Welcome to your Asda Accrington. As we have been in the community now for the last 29 years, you've probably shopped with us before. But if youre yet to experience our famously low prices and happy to help colleagues let me assure you theres plenty more besides .. etc etc ...

Now im sure that accrington asda has been open for a lot longer than 29 years .. i can remember going up the ramp in the old accy asda on blackburn road when i was a kid with mum and dad .. now spugs says that the new asda was opened in 1984 which would make it 26 years ... i dont know by that time we were going to rawtenstall asda .. which opened in 1978 ... so folks ... when was it ..

Re: A question bout Accy Asda

It was opened on Blackburn Rd within a year of my 1st marriage - so that would be 1962

No, Flashy .... the old Asda was still there in 1982. Remember it well due to the fact that my son was born in June of that year (he is now 28), and my waters broke whilst I was standing in the queue at the cigarette stall .. You don't forget things like time and place on these matters ...LOL.

Up until ASDA taking it over in the 70's the Blackburn Rd Supermarket was "Queens". I used to with my Mum. We once spent £25 quid! lol

I'm with Katex here; I got married in 82 (first time!) I think I recall shopping both that year.

Wikepedia says 1965-
"Asda Stores Limited was founded as Associated Dairies & Farm Stores Limited in 1949 in Leeds. The adoption of the Asda name occurred in 1965 with the merger of the Asquith chain of three supermarkets and Associated Dairies; Asda is an abbreviation of Asquith and Dairies"

In 1969 until 1971 we looked after my ailing grandparents, This is the period I knew it as the "Queens". That puts me at 7 to 9 years old. I remember the brand change to ASDA but can't recall just when.

Re: A question bout Accy Asda

I think is just a misprint and should have read 39. If Bernie worked there 72/73 and, according to Jeanette Winterson ... opened sometime in the 70's, only '71 left.

"All that changed in the 1970’s when Asda opened a supermarket in Accrington"
