Accrington Fair

Does the fair still come to Accrington and if so where do they put it.
How long is it since it left Ellison Spare ground

It used to go up by the railway station, but since the rebuild gawd knows, or cares. can't say when it finished on Ellisons Tenement cos i stopped goin near when i came out me teens, Twas still yon then.

They had it a few times where the railway sidings used to be next to Charter St .

I recall that last year some sort of fair was allowed on Foxhill playing fields in Ossy.

The proper name was Ellison's tenement, which means ground. Ellison St is nearby They were named after the long-established family who owned the land.I was in Acc today and thought I ought to walk down that way to see what's there - but I didn't. IU sear I coyld smell the fried onions.

The last one i took my lad to was on the railway station site , probly 2/3 years ago , there was one on harvey st playing fields last year but i don't think it was the same "firm " as there was only o few rides there !

Atarah, last night, (re.meeting on museum in Accy) brought some great 'photos of the fair in Accy ... well before even my time.

They were great ... she remarked that some of the people in them may have been ancestors of any one of us ... how true.

Doubt very much if they were any of our ancestors kate, were that owd wouldn't have been any fairs back then.

Is Ellison spare ground as you call it the ground by the old Hippodrome. I am sure when we were kids the fair was down there as well as the circus when it came to town.

it stood next to the old bus depot for donkeys,it used to come just before easter, and usually again around september, and mitchell was the lessee,(the firm that rented the ground off the council,and mitchells then rented it out to other showmen, it went onto blackburn easter fair,"blackburn pot fair"
