Re: Rhyddings High School??

Who was your favorite teacher and why?????
I had 2 really, Bob cunliffe, and Mr newton,

Bob because he gave us permission to skip classes we didnt like and go and play football in the new sports hall.

Les Newton because he was a decent teacher who took no rubbish from anyone.
even to the extent of going to the gates and sorting out some mad dads that came every now and then,

I never went to the school but my uncle was a teacher there Mr Haworth.

Happy memories. I was there from 77-82. Mrs banks once caned me and a mate for some trivial rubbish, she also caught me out selling forged parents notes. Always thought she was too much of a stiff. Also does anyone remember Mr abel. Think I saw Mrs merrigold a couple of months ago in ossy.

Mrs. Merigold is still around. I didn't go to Rhyddings but I went to her for piano lessons in my teens.

I was also there from 77 - 82. Remember Mr Flanagan (Flambards) ,Mr. Frankland, Mrs. Fogg, Mr. Abel (my favourite) , Mr.Ainsworth (he's still there! ), Mrs. Banks (Boo),Mr. And Mrs. Atkinson etc. Happy days! Great time to be a teenager!

Entwisi. The name rings a bell, just trying to picture her face! One of my old school mates is coming round soon and he remembers everyone so I'll pick his brains.

Hi. Not sure if this thread is still alive, but I've enjoyed reading it.

I was at Rhyddings from 79-83, and recognise lots of teachers' names. Mr Newton was a star wasn't he!

I didn't notice anyone from the same year in the thread but if there is, there is a reunion happening in June. There's a Facebook page for it called Rhyddings 83.

Any of you 82ers remember Lorraine Hargreaves and/or know how she's doing these days?

i liked my blazer, loads of pockets to put things in!

63 to 68 and I'm sure that the layout has changed but back then they had a couple of new rooms upstairs??? As was the norm we ran everywhere but always got dragged back as you turned to run up the stairs and you blazer pocket got caught by the metal handrail that stuck too far out almost always ripping the blazer!!! Mum was happy!

Re: Rhyddings High School??

As i recall, when we were caught running down the corridor a hand would fly out from some doorway and grip you by the collar. Then you would be made to walk all the way back to where you came from and start again under the steely eye of some tyrant (and there were many). I was thrashed many a time by one or other inadequate excuse for a teacher. The best teacher were the most inspirational ones, they didn't have to batter you as they had your concentration in the first place. Still, I have happy memories with my mates and still see some of them.

Blazer just dark green, the badge shaped like a shield in yellow with ASTS at the bottom. The tie yellow and green angled stripes but we still looked a scruffy lot, on my photos anyway. Was there 1956/60.

93-98 here, Miss Moore the bulldog chewing a wasp was head teacher until Mr Burke took over and gave us a strange speech about Crash Bandicoot.

Mr Newton awesome teacher only had him for one class of the final year although he did slap the goodness out of my mate for flicking rubberbands hahaha we still liked him tho, Mr Szpack had him for PSE where he taught us having sex using crisp packet condoms is dangerous and also some ju jitsu moves lol Mr Barnes taught geography, nice teacher always chilled even when he caught me punching another kid in the face.

Miss Cooper P.E teacher aka j-lo of them days, Mr Thompson P.E. teacher he went sooo red when he got mad, Mr Best, science teacher nice guy when he was there which wasnt often got pushed around by some bad kids tho, Mr Hargreves Maths teacher screw him and his weird ass desks that uppercut you, I felt like i was battling the effects of chloroform everytime i was in his class, Mr Winkley he was ok with me but others had alot of problems with him, last I heard he topped himself in his car not sure if its a rumour or true, Mr Mcmanus aka captain kremmen odd guy, I heard he snapped and slapped a kid haha Mr Chappel French teacher he used to sit in the quad playing his guitar really badly and he went on and on about a cravate for some reason

Good times, gosh I miss those greasy pizzas at lunchtime...

Yes, was there 1995-2000.

A terrible school at times, some of the teaching standards looking back where absolutely abysmal.

Agreed Mr Newton in technology was one of the best.

Yes, if anyone remembers the woodwork teacher Mr Winkley ?? Dennis I think his name was?? He commited suicide around 1999-2000 when I was in year 11 I think.

Mr Szpack Deputy Head, nutter.
Mr Barnes (Geography) , who was brilliant. ..... and is still there!
Mr Lavin & Jordan , P.E.
Mr Connell (French), nice bloke.
Mr Ainsworth, (History) and deputy head, about 4ft 5, but fierce as anything.
Mrs Whelan (Maths), she was pretty cool, but a rubbish teacher I thought.
Mrs Cooper (chemistry), right wining old bint!
Mr Rigby (Biology), Strange bloke.
Mr Newton (Technology), Brilliant.
Mr Stobbs (Art), Who I believe sadly died of cancer a few years back?? Nice chap.
Mr Jagger (Art), Also sadly passed away a few years ago.
Miss Teale (Dance), what a nutter she was!
Mr Trickett (Deputy Head), who aparently is now the headteacher???

Mr. Ainsworth is retiring this year and Miss Teale married Mr. Stobbs and is still teaching at Rhyddings. Mr. Rigby left last year. I went to Rhyddings till 1982 and my kids went there later and they were taught by some of the teachers I had.

I remember going to Rhyddings st Con club1965/6.....met some girls who also went there, Pat Holden(or it could have been Eillen), Sheila Parr, Jackie Hetherington( or it could have been her sister). I think they went to Rhyddings '61-'66.

A quick bump back up the topics. I went to Rhyddings 77 - 82. Hard not to really living across the road on Sun St.
Remember loads of the teachers previously mentioned but what about Mrs Graser- French Teacher? The only time she liked me was during Wimbledon when I could bring the portable black & white telly to watch the matches. Ironically she moved to Carr Hill School in Kirkham & taught a couple of my cousins!

Forget who taught RE, Art, Tech Drawing and History in the 5th year.

I remember the first year classes were at Moorhead Junior school, Then I spent the second year at Haworth st and the 4th and 5th years at the Tech on Union Rd.

I remember when I left it seemed like just another day and we all just went home. Nowadays there seems to be partys, prom nights, last day seems to be a free for all with everyone painting each other and all sorts going on.....Did I miss out somewhere??

Anyone got photos of the 64-69 era.....

Phil

I attended from 1963 to 1968.
Forms 1A and 1X and 1R spent the first year at Moor End school at the top of Ossy.
Second year was at Haworth Street.
Then the A and X forms spent the 3rd, 4th and 5th years down at the Tech.

At the Tech, Mrs Westwell taught Art, Mr Eccles taught Tech Drawing.....
Terry Eccles, appropriately nicknamed ‘Tex’ was a great chap. He was a Rovers supporter and we could easily get him talking about football for at least half a lesson! I think he lived in Rishton, or Blackburn, because he used to catch the train home every afternoon on the opposite platform to us going home to Huncoat with lots of girls from Paddock House going to Burnley!
I loved my time at the Tech as we basically were trusted by the staff and we had the free run of the place. The girls had a small enclosed yard but the boys had the big concrete yard which would have 3 games of footy going on most days and cricket matches in the summer using a mat and those sprung wickets!
Every few weeks Mr Gibson, Geography would come in and tell us a long ‘story’ straight out of his head about world events, cultures and famous people. These were amazing tales and taught us more than all of the other lessons put together. Mr Gibson or ‘Abdul’ as we called him was an inspiration. At the end of his ‘Story’ lessons we would shower him with pennies and half pennies which he spent on his beloved Senior Service fags!
Such happy days at the Tech!
