Moorhead High School
Didn't realise there was so many of us from Moorhead on here so I thought i would start a thread off to share teacher stories and reminis lol! Already been a few teachers mentioned so we will see who else we can add to our own Moorhead Hall of Fame!
|
Re: Moorhead High School
Among my particular favourites were John Bolton {english** who sadly died a few years ago;he was massively enthusiastic and really brought the text alive. Also Bill Green and Tony Robinson [history] again both really got into their subject and also got special dispensation for me to go on a school trip to a Test match when it was strictly "boys only"!!! I think the told Mrs Jones it was educational because I was the team scorer or some other such flannel!

Re: Moorhead High School
My days at Moorhead are so long ago that it wasn't even called Moorhead then and the teachers I had would have been long gone by the time you got there. It was all girls in those days and the male teachers always seemed to be cringeing with embarrassment over something or other. Mr. Mortimer (science - mainly chemistry) used to blush right round the back of his neck and ears.
I can still hear Mr. Duckworth (science again) saying those infamous words "Don't forget to put a rubber bung in it." |
Re: Moorhead High School
Didn't Jim Bowen teach when it was an all girls school Willow??

Not when I was there.

Re: Moorhead High School
Maybe he taught at the Grammar school which was boys only when the High School (Moorhead's name back then)was girls only. That was out on Blackburn Rd near The Miners.

I left in 1988 so I doubt it.

Re: Moorhead High School
How on earth do you remember Gary Robinson Pilky? That was in 1980 in the summer. I was in the first year then (left in 1984) It was probably the most horrible day of my schooling. I actually saw it happen as I was in transit from the Cromwell building to the Queens building.
I remember Mr Bolton (RIP) Mrs Skull (RIP) Mr Green, Mr Simpkins, Mr Robinson, Mrs Heap, Mr and Mrs Edwards (French and Chemistry) Mr Cartiledge (Chemmy) Mr Harris and Mr McGrath (Physics) Mr Riley (Biology and great drummer) Mr Howarth (Biology) Mr and Mrs Walmsley (English) Mr Robbins and Mrs Riley (Maths) Miss Tomlinson and Mrs Roberts (PE) Mrs Jones (History and temporary headmistress, the school ran like clockwork when she was in charge) Mrs Stewart (Geography) Mr White (music) Mr Webb and Mr McCaffrey (RE) Miss Parkinson (French) Mrs Sandham (German) Mrs Fowler (Domestic Science) Mr Williamson and Mr Jordan (Art) Mr Morgan (Mallen, English) Mr Caudwell (Maths, and general token fanciable male teacher) He must have been young when he started, as I left 21 years ago this year and like most kids, I thought all adults were old.:D |
Re: Moorhead High School
Out of that lot there's only Miss Tomlinson (PE) who rings a bell. Presuming she was the same Miss Tomlinson.
Mrs. Taylor also did PE. We had Mrs Riley (maths but couldn't do geometry) Mr Mortimer and Mr Duckworth (sciences) Miss Melody (geography) Mrs Moon (French) Mr Manley (history) and Miss Redmayne (RE). Golly gosh I can't remember any more! Maybe they'll come back to me. |
Re: Moorhead High School
I also remember Mrs Taylor (PE) she retired at the end of my first year.:)
|
Re: Moorhead High School
She wasn't as scary as Miss Tomlinson. The latter could put the fear of God into a humble first year on the hockey pitch.
|
Re: Moorhead High School
Mr McHale, Mr Caudwell, Mr Williamson and Mr Jordan are all still there.........
|
Re: Moorhead High School
Miss Tomlinson was there when i was too, but she had an even more venomous partner in crime, Miss Blades!! I also remember that Geography teacher that looked like Deidre Barlow off Corrie, was she called Mrs Smith?
|
Re: Moorhead High School
Think the old chap who taught chemistry was called Mr Sims.I used to enjoy biology lessons with Mr Haworth;he used to wear the most fantastic floral print shirts and massive wide ties!
|
Re: Moorhead High School
What was that Physics teacher called with the shocking curly hair and glasses, think he left in '88??

Re: Moorhead High School
Chemistry teacher Mr cartilage(or however you spell it)he was a good teacher and was identical to mr magoo. He once came on the stage in front of all the Cromwell building and said he could make us all disappear and then promptly took his glasses off, pmsl. The point he was trying to make was that someone had lost their glasses and not come to claim them.

Re: Moorhead High School
Ken Scott inspired me to take up a career in woodworking, I'm still at it 20 odd years later. The most inspiring teacher that I ever encountered was a guy that went by the name of Winky Barrel, a chemistry teacher. He taught me for a year and sadly died. I think that must have been around 1975, the guy had been a professor but an objector to the second war and so got shuffled down to the grammar school, passionate about his subject though

Re: Moorhead High School
I remember all those teachers mentioned earlier, cant believe Mr Williamson is still teaching art, his wife taught us French as well. He put down £100 on my desk in tenners to answer a question i quite clearly could not answer! Gave me E E in my report "little imagination" etc etc. Mr Robinson and Cricket and Italian Football, those were good days! Memories Memories. Mr McGraph looking at the cieling whilst talking to you...Mr Cauldwell taking the mick out of people. Mr Wells, and his knack of making you sing a nursery rhyme when you went into his classroom....Mrs Simms? Does anybody remember her? What was the female music teacher called who loved herself? I left in 84
|
Re: Moorhead High School
Blimey yes;female music teacher, blonde curly hair??Was it Barrett??
|
Re: Moorhead High School

Re: Moorhead High School
I still see Robbo occaisionally at Old Trafford, watching Lancashire during the cricket season. He's got the life of Reilly.

Re: Moorhead High School
The music teacher was called Miss dickinson and then she married and is Mrs Regan.

Re: Moorhead High School
I love this site! I remember the whole ordeal with Gary Robinson getting struck by lightening. I was the girlfriend of Allan Tootle at the time (who I believe was Gary's step brother. ) Ahhhh first love....I will never ever forget the moment Mr. Webb (religious studies) and Mr. Lowe (p.e.) came running in to the assembly hall where we were all clustered and made to sing to calm us until the storm had passed. They were drenched and literally sobbing. They had tried to save the boy and could not.
My favorite teachers were Mrs. Poole (commerce) and my art teacher who I only remember as Angela (anyone know her last name?)....she had brilliant red hair....and I remember her, because she really seemed to care about her students. Anyone remember Mr. Sutcliffe? He was either my chemistry or math teacher (getting old - memory fading)....he once lifted me off the ground by my hair for playing catch with a tennis ball in the hallway. Terrible temper ! Mr. White was my music teacher - pompous little man he was....I wanted to play the trumpet, and he informed me that girls do not play the trumpet, and gave me a french horn instead. That lasted two weeks or so. Music was the first subject I dropped, (right before physics) ....funnily enough I am a musician and writer now. Anyone remember the scandal spreading across the school that Mr. White was having an affair with a student....? Can't remember her last name but her first name was Karen. Ms. Tomlinson caught me smoking with a group of boys and we all got sent to Mr. Mcaffry. The boys all got the cane. I got a letter sent home to my mother. I don't know which was worse. Tina Canada |
Re: Moorhead High School
Hi Tina;think the flame haired art teacher was Miss Parsons,Mr Sutcliffe taught maths and later left to become....a prison warder!
|
Re: Moorhead High School
Well done Lindsey I have been sat here all morning trying to think of her name and it was Miss Parsons.
|
Re: Moorhead High School
Wow your memories are far better than mine. I left in 1992 and had forgotten most of these names but they are all coming flooding back to me now :)
|
Re: Moorhead High School
I remember most of the teachers mentioned in this thread, I left in 86, all good memories, had lots of run ins with the teachers, Mrs Fowler pinned me up against the corridor for looking at my shoulder when she told me I had a chip on it, I thought one of my mates had put one there! Mr Green was a great teacher, had Mrs Jones for History, home work was always on time for her, she frightened the life out of me, Miss Watts wasn't she the domestic science teacher who was quite soft?

Re: Moorhead High School
I have just looked at the link for the Moorhead website. OMG how things have changed. There are only 4 teachers that I remember from my time there.
Kevin Cauldwell. Known in my time as Smurf. Seems to have aquired the nom-de-plume "Chuckle" somewhere down the line; I can see why. I never had the pleasure of being taught by him. Dave Nield. This fella had a very nasty streak at times. Some of the punishments he used to dish out were outlawed by the Geneva Convention. He used to help run the outdoor persuits and sunday walks to the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales etc. Nick Williamson. He only taught me for whilst I was in the 3rd year. I agree about him looking like a 70's porn star. I'm sure he appears quite a few times in my collection of vid's. :huh8: That mugshot of him must be a very old photo, because he looked like that in the early 80's. Either that or he bathes in Grecian 2000. Barry Jordan. He taught me for my O' level art. We very quickly came to an understanding that I had enough talent to not work, and just turn up for the exam. After that he left me to my own devices and art lessons were a breeze. Big-up-respect to Barry Jordan coz I always had a tent and climbing equipment on permenant loan from him for my final two years at school. He took charge of the outdoor persuits when Fred Edwards, the chemistry teacher, who sadly died last year, left to go teaching at a school in Chorley. |
