13 for dinner

Went out last night with a big group of people but it turned out that there were 13 of us going for a meal. When we got there, the table was sat for 14 and the restaurant owners had put a teddy bear in the 14th place.

Do other restaurants do that?

BTW - we went to Richmond's in Blackburn and apart from chipping my tooth (I hit it with a fork - don't ask ) the meal was amazingly good.

Apart from us though there was only one other group of 5 people in the whole place plus one couple who took one look at us rowdy lot and left after their first course.

Have you checked the bill?

Teddy might have been quaffing Cristal champagne and munching his way through an almighty pile of Beluga caviar.

Quite possibly - I don't think there was one responsible adult amongst us by the time the bill came.

No, it's not Chinese. It's just posh nosh. I had mushrooms on toast for starters followed by steak and chips - very stylishly presented though and extremely good quality.

It's at Sudell Cross in Blackburn.

I don't know where the superstition about 13 at the table started but I've heard it before.

Re: 13 for dinner

The superstition harks back to the Last Supper with Jesus and his 12 disciples present (making 13) and the next thing that happened after that was Judas turning Jesus over to the bad guys.

I like the idea of the teddy bear. That's cute.

BTW - something happened despite the bear though didn't it? - your tooth!

Do chips count as "posh nosh" thought they were more a typical 'plat du jour' item in Accrington and District

Depends on what you make them with. Though if from McD's then they are A La Carte.

Thirteen

Let's hope that it is Teddy who eats a bad prawn before next year.

Re: 13 for dinner

Only time I have been in a group of 13 is when out in the pub. Though due to pit stops refills juke box etc there never was 13 actually down on their botties at anyone time. Though with a chinese restaurant I would have thought they would like a table of 8 but curse and run a mile at the thought of a table for 4 even if they have laid 4 places.
