Re Park yes its 2x speed limit, but "In teh right conditions" it is perfectly safe.
Would of been nearly bouncing of the limiter though, I recon needle is Way, Way out.

140 MPH isnt really ever safe, not as bad as some make out (Time & Place) but not safe, a blow out at that speed would be horrific, who ever the driver.

Entwisi...it may be perfectly safe for you.....having a few years of driving and driving conditions under your belt, but I would argue that this speed is not safe for and 18 year old, who surely, must have MUCH less experience of road conditions, other drivers, being able to identify possible hazards.

Re: 140m.p.h.

18 year old wouldn't have lots of road experience as far as we know but you can take part in motorsport from a very early age, take Lewis Hamilton as an example, 22 YO and leading F1 championship.

A blowout at 70 is more than enough to take a lot of people out, as is getting out teh bath, there are some things in life that you can't control, IMHO I make sure I have quality tyres, properly inflated etc, I make sure brakes suspension etc are all properly maintained. the point of risk is that you minimise it where possible and accept what you can't change. Its that last bit that keeps some people under 70 their whole lives, they have a lower tolerance to risk than say me

While I accept what you say Entwisi, what are the chances that this young man has developed the skills that Lewis Hamilton has....or that he has had a motorsport background.....pretty slim I'll bet or his counsel would have used these facts to get him a lighter penalty.

And motorsport experience doesn't equip you to deal with the nutters who fly up the M65.....but thay's only my opinion.

Margaret, I'm not trying to defend this particular individual, I'm just saying that speed iteslf and age cannot be generalised against

Re: 140m.p.h.

Ok, ok. I can't quote everyone that posted but the 2 major points I meant were :-

1. Driving on the shoulder and undertaking.

2. Filming while he was driving.

His getting caught wasn't a mistake it was a blessing for other road users. When I touched 150 it was 3 am and the road was totally empty. Many people like speed and yes, it's fun to have a blast if you stay within your capabilities and don't endanger other people. For those petrol heads out there that are wondering what car I was driving it was a renault 25 that had been toyed with a little.

The most important message here folks is please stay safe. Have fun when it's safe to do so but, BE CAREFUL. Have a great day everyone.

It's Ok, there won't be room for him in prison......they are letting people out if they say 'sorry' to their victims.

An advanced driving course would do more than prison would ever do!

No I am not in favour of an advanced driving course, unless of course they are made to pay for it....there are plenty of law abiding youngsters who stay out of trouble who can't afford those kind of things.

Maybe we should change the system and teach them better in the first place? Can we blame them for being stupid or do we have to take some responsibility?
