I heard about this on the radio this morning. She has been to Italy for IVF so has probably paid a small fortune to have it done. I have to say that I doubt that any doctor in this country would have performed IVF on her and she certainly wouldn't qualify for it over here. I suppose that on the continent, anyone who is willing to pay for a procedure qualifies. In my opinion women stop being able to get pregnant at a certain age for a reason. It is what nature intended and should be respected. I only hope that she has a decent, caring family who will look after this child when she is no longer around.

It is sad when you meet somebody later in life with whom you would love to have children. However, you can't have everything, contrary to what seems to happen so much these days. As Lettie says, Nature is wise. Women can't have children late in life for good reasons, not least the welfare of the child. Perhaps she's rich enough to afford nannies and good child care, but where is the point in having one if you don't spend time with it?

If it's nature's way of stopping older people becoming parents, why do men still produce active sperm until death?

Admittedly with the sperm doing a gentle, sedate breast stroke, rather than a more frantic front crawl, as they would have been doing when the man was younger.;)

It is mainly to do with the energy you have I think Lettie, I had my son at 39 and think that was about the line ... found this out when I had to look after my Grandaughter quite a bit 'cause of my daughter's shifts.... 7 years later. Although you find the energy from somewhere, very difficult to keep up with their boundless capacity for activity.

Yeh, has been proved though that even though still produced, does lose some of its qualities and not really recommended to father a child late in life for fear of disabilities to the foetus. Hey !! I'm gettin' quite serious here 'aint I :D

yeh c'mon, lighten up kate, maybe you should have responded to chav's message instead.

Also, i know someone who went through the menopause in her twenties! Some women do go through it young and maybe mother nature does need to be questioned in these cases.

Lets see now a child is born to a 15 year old kid. Then she has a kid in every of her four marriges. Then at 60 she meets a rich toyboy and opts to have IVF to gain another sprog. Does this mean women are palying at keeping up with the Jonses?

All I can say is this woman's 1) self-centred 2) deranged 3) suffering from memory loss.

She's about my age and I can't imagine having to start coping all over again with nappies and feeds, potty-training, school, teenage blues. I have 2 grandchildren and I love them both to bits. I brought my own children up and I have always been "hands on" with theirs but after over 42 years of parenting and grandparenting I also have time to live my life for myself - as Nature intended. I just hope she has the energy, I haven't.
