We owe so much to the men who were so brave, and lost their lives on the First Day of the Somme.

I was not getting a Gayle or Graham for that matter, just Gayles comments on PB. My Grandfathers was gased in the great war and subsequently died 12 years before I was born, which fills me with great sadness, the fact that I never had the opertunity to see my granddad
The ist July will be a very special day for me

No but they may have taken over the server g jones.

Gayle has made a valid point, and it's not sour grapes, it's made on her experience of working with community groups. Councils always do it, they make a small contribution to something that a lot of others have also contributed to and they announce it like non of it would have gone ahead if it wasn't for them. Points scoring over something like this is a complete no no in my eyes. TUT at you.

(Glad this missing thread has reappeared.:))

Take a deep breath Jaysay, but I'm in favour of the leader of our council being involved with this memorial event.

He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

I for one would be very disappointed if our civic leaders weren't involved with this anniversary, and don't see it as stealing anyone's thunder. In a democracy it's their duty.

Re: July 1st 1916 - 2006

My Great Grandfather fought with the Kings Liverpool Regiment and left a leg back in France. I’ve also recently discovered that one of my great uncles fought and died with the East Lancs. and another died of his wound in 1922 after fighting with one of the Yorkshire Regiments. A number of distant relatives i.e. brothers of my great Grandmother also give their lot with the Pals.

I missed the dedication of the memorial the other year, but I hope to be there on the day of the Procession. Despite my earlier knock of HBC this is a day for all those with the wish, will and want to honour those men to be together and do so.

I agree, it doesn't matter, and everyone should, but it obviously matters to the council s because they always have to make a big point of it.
Although I do understand they want people to know that they're doing something and that it's got to be advertised.

I agree Gary. I hope Peter delivers a poignant speech. I believe I will have to speak, so if so, I'll post it first here if I can. I have been thinking about this for a while and it bothers me that time dims the memory.

Yes, can accept that but there were a couple of things that annoyed me which I can't go into. I did point out that I was possibly being childish as I welcomed the additional publicity.

Yes, I too hope that Mr Britcliffe makes a good speech on the day.
