July 1st 1916 - 2006

It has been reported in the L.E.T. that Hyndburn council, that is Peter Britcliffe along with Bill Turner, local historian and author, have announced an open air service and civic parade on the 1st July to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme in which the Accrington Pals suffered devastating losses on the opening day of the battle. This will include a two minute silence.

The Baxenden Bash Fair will also form part of the commemorations, and the Haworth Gallery will have an exhibition entitled "Our Dear Pals, the Somme and the Great War"

Accy town hall will be showing films of the Pals and the First World War and the Ossy Players will perform a play on BBC Radio Lancashire.

Mmmm, yes I read that too. I went to a couple of meetings early in the year, there were a few groups who thought they had a bit of contribution to make to the 90th anniversary of the battle of the somme. Anyway, a certain person realised that there was all this stuff going on and that the Council should be involved. So he invited us all to a meeting which had to be held at Scaitcliffe House because he doesn't like going to meetings if they're held anywhere else. At the point that I realised that the Council (he) wanted to take all the glory for all of the stuff going on I backed out.

Yes, Ossy Players are putting on the Accrington Pals on Radio Lancashire so I suppose I have got to say thank you to them for giving us a bit of publicity in the paper today but (and yes, you can call me childish) it does annoy me that they are trying to take credit for the stuff that all of these community groups were trying to do. Typical!!!!!

Especially when HBC has removed it's assistance, both financially and physically, with other events within the Borough this year.

Knowing Gayle and having spoken with her, and she was the most gracious of losers on the night and wished Peter all the best, she isn't bitter at all, she is an active member of the community John and I think if you speak to her you' will quickly come to the same conclusion. She will make a great councillor if she decides to stand again.

Thank god for that Graham, I thought you'd gon missing, I was going to alert the police I was that concerned. As for the lovely Gayle I can't say I've had the pleasure of her comany, I'm sure she is a nice person, but I only commented on what I read in her post and came to that conclusion, anytime she posts something I agree with I will tell her so and the same goes for you, but in your case I can't really see that happening, can you.

I thought the title of this post was 'Re: July 1st 1916 - 2006 ', not get at Gayle and Graham.
We owe so much to the men who were so brave, and lost their lives on the First Day of the Somme.

Sod the council, get out on the streets and remember those that went abroad and never returned home, remember those that did come home and suffered many years from the effect of that conflict, remember the widows, wives, sons and daughters, mothers and fathers that give so much…….Many others also fought from across East Lancashire, Yorkshire and further north as well as those who from home who fought with other Regiments and services. Sod HBC……..they’ve yet to give anything back.

Gayle, God Bless……

Cheers Busman.......

It concerns me that we (through the generations) are forgetting slowly those that gave so much. I am told that Accrington was the smallest town to provide a full batalion. I think the efforts put in 3 years ago on Church Street were the beginnings of not just remembering our history, but considering what went through the minds of those so young (and not so)that faced impending mutilation, horror, death; and the forgotten victims, those loved ones left behind, mothers, girlfriends, dads, people we often forget even when commemoration time comes around..

I remember the old bloke next door to my gran who was used as Jap forced labour on the Kwai (WW2) for 3 years. He never got over it despite living to an old age.
