But with this STUPID intermitten sentence, the longest you are going to do without this is A WEEKEND, a FULL WEEKEND....oh it must break the poor sod's hearts to be without WIFE, KIDS ect..... for a FULL WEEKEND!!

I agree with the first part, It's one of the things my friend mentioned hit her the most, and why she would make sure she didn't go there again.
The being with murderers was the scariest part she said.
The second part I think you may underestimate the power of being tagged and in effect put in a cell at night, albeit your own home with family. Imagine not being able to nip out down the shop. In some ways thats worse than being in prison, because it's something your used to be able to do when at home.
When you've got someone on a tag, sitting there explaining how it feels, you realise it may appear cushy but it's not that cushy in reality. It's still a punishment that puts people off re offending.

If they do this and then find people reoffend more than ppl who went full time to prison then fair enough, but for minor offences I don't believe that will happen.

Still think our prisons should be used for the most serious offences first, if less non serious offences went to prison, more people who commit assaults etc would be in there.

Everyone says that Wynonie Harris. What can we (I) do about it? But really that’s just an excuse for doing nothing.

As individuals we can do very little about the criminal justice system other than badger our MP. Sadly only a tiny majority even think about doing that let alone actually writing to their MP on the issue.

They soon change their minds when they become a victim though and then they want the world to sit up and take notice.

OK, JB, I shall make a start by writing to my local MP. I'd also like to invite Greg Pope to give his comments on the state of the present criminal justice system. It'll be interesting to see what he says...

If only more people took your view Wynonie Harris – if only.

Sadly we all wait for someone else to do something about it.

by giving your opinions your doing something. Others read them and they give theirs, eventually they get noticed and something hets done, eventually. Government should be noticing that the public is not happy with the justice system as it is because it seems inconsistent, make it consistent and use this part time thing for the right crimes and it will be usefull.

Well, I'm not expecting an early reply and I expect Greg Pope will maintain a diplomatic silence, too. Law and order is the subject that dare not speak its name as far as politicians are concerned, because they know they'll get a hammering from the long-suffering public!

its something i have done a few times in the past, i have even been down to the house with a deputation to lobby the M.P. of the day, but sad to say nothing changed, was treated very well by the M.P. but thats where it ended. its a pity but i will not waste my time and money any more. hope others are more sucessful but i have my doubts.

To me an MP unless in as an independent or a rebel will always follow the party line with the whips on there case. Its a shame that they have to do this as it gives the impression they are incaplable of independent thought or for standing up for those that elected them.

I could've told the Government Intermittent custodial sentences were a waste of money :D

I missed this topic at the time because I was away but can actually see jmbutty's point. The wife and children who also suffer when the breadwinner loses his job by being in jail have actually done nothing wrong themselves.

The obvious problem to me would be that jails would end up being overflowing at the weekends.

Sorry to seem hard-hearted on this subject Willow ....... but tough! The courts might do her a favour locking him up then she can get shut of him!

Nope they've wasted all that money building special buildings within the perimeter of the prison grounds for this hair-brain scheme. :(

If it's only an unpaid fine type of thing would she really want shut of him? If he's a hardened criminal cat burglar type then maybe, but it was never going to be for them was it?

Yeah I can see your point Willow but were's the detterent in all this? Which is what punishment is supposed to be about.

It stops them enjoying themselves and having free time. All they get is prison and work. Seems like a deterrant to me, time to earn money but no freedom to spend any. Anyway it's scrapped so that's the end of that.
