Re: Christian taliban in the US
"Christian Taliban?"
I like that! So much more evocative of a certain mindset than "Christian Right!" To quote a bumper sticker "The last time we mixed religion and politics, people got burned at the stake." Well, there are large parts of the country where we have a shortage of teachers. Maybe some smart administrator will seize the opportunity! Sounds like this teacher is deserving of a lot more appreciation. |
Re: Christian taliban in the US
Taliban? A tad over the top, don't you think? There is a certain element within the Christian community better described as zealots. That holds true for every religion. America is not a theocracy - nor will it become one.

Re: Christian taliban in the US
Bullseyebarb, Sorry if you think my use of the taliban is a bit strong , but does the name , Rev. Fred Phelps mean anything to you ...........in case it doesnt ....he's the "Christian" gentleman from Kansas who along with his acolytes have been travelling the country and picketing the funerals of dead service people and praying for God to infect all servicemen with the AIDS virus,
Or maybe you haven't heard about another "Christian" gentleman called Jerry Falwell, the guy has a national TV show called the 700 club , he's the guy who told America that Katrina was Gods punishment to New Orleans for being a city comparable to the cities on the Plain ( Sodom and Gommarah) Lets not forget to mention brother Jimmy Swaggert (cousin of Jerry Lee Lewis) he's the one who preachs on Sundays and spends the rest of the week with $10 hookers . I wont bother to mention Americas favourite preacher , Billy Graham and his views on Jews (check the released Nixon tapes) I guess Mormons qualify as Christians , so how about the guy recently arrested in Vegas after being on the FBIs most wanted list, for forcing young girls into polygamous marriages and sodomy I've just checked my OED and a zealot is described as .."an uncompromising or extreme partisan, a fanatic" ergo ...Taliban = Fanatic = Zealot ......... would be interested to hear/read your views on the latest news out of Georgia where they are trying to ban from a public library the childrens books by British writer , J K Rowling (Harry Potter series) for being too Satanic |

Re: Christian taliban in the US
I'm trying to remember wether it was the Rev. Jerry Falwell or Rev. Oral Roberts (great name for a preacher) who said the Teletubies should be banned from U S television, evidently TinkyWinky is gay and he was subliminally indoctrinating American toddlers, the "christian' gentleman knew this as a fact because he (TinkyWinky) wears purple/lavender coloured clothes and the thing on his head was triangle shaped

I am well aware of all of the above. I would never classify Fred Phelps as a Christian. He's a vicious, twisted old man. He and his pitiful followers deserve nothing but contempt. Warren Jeffs, (the cult leader recently arrested in Las Vegas), doesn't qualify as a Christian either. The Mormons certainly would not claim him. Don't care for either Falwell or Swaggert. Billy Graham? Well, I think it's fair to say that's he's done a lot of good in the world. I believe in redemption and who amongst us hasn't said or done something stupid at some point in our lives. Mrs. Laura Mallory of Gwinnett County, Georgia has been trying to get Harry Potter banned from public schools for some time now. She has been repeatedly turned down and will continue to go nowhere with her appeals. I feel very sorry for her children. I grew up reading Enid Blyton. No doubt Mrs. Mallory would have gone after Enid, too. Do not judge a society by such people. America is a very religious country, with all faiths represented. The vast majority of us can spot the nutcases and do not subscribe to their way of thinking. |
Re: Christian taliban in the US
Absolutely right bullseyebarb Warren Jeffs is not a Mormon, nor are any of the polygamous groups. They may claim to be Mormons but they are not members of our church and anyone in our church who attempted bigamy never mind polygamy or committed any sexual assault would be excommunicated.
It makes good headlines to call them Mormons but they have their own breakaway sects and have no alleigance to the official LDS church. |
Re: Christian taliban in the US
Good post Bullseyebarb!
Just to clarify Steeljack, it's Pat Robertson that runs the 700 club. Also remember when Oral Roberts said he was gonna go up in some tower and not come down (or maybe eat) until he raised a certain amount of money? Most of these type of guys are indeed pretty radical and/or do/say some extremely stupid, unbiblical things! I consider myself a religious conservative! However, I really hate it when I'm thrown into the same "boat" with these guys. I tried to live my life based on Biblical guidlines. When people do the aforementioned, since it usually has no basis in Biblical thought, I tried to pay no mind or to stand up and question what they're doing. I have belliefs that I would certainly die for, but find so many "religious" discussion/argument/disagreement are either wrong or in a Biblical gray areas. |
Re: Christian taliban in the US
LancYorkYankee , stand corrected , you are correct it is Pat Robertson who has the TV program , but I still hold my original view , both Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson are evil and both spew the same kind of evil bile as Osama Bin Laden and his followers

Anyone remember the Headline from the Daily Mirror , Nov. 6. 2004 How can 59,054,087 be so dumb! |
Re: Christian taliban in the US
The ex-husband of a friend of mine in Texas gave all their life savings to a TV evangelist. When they ended up bankrupt he blamed her lack of faith! You can see why he's ex.
