Why does corned beef come in those oblong tins, opened with a silly key, anyway?

Would be so much easier if it was in a normal cylindrical tin. You could open both ends with a tin opener and slide the meat out.

Sardine tins that come with a key to roll the lid back are the devil's own invention. I love sardines on toast so I often open a tin of the things.

Half the time, the key snaps off when the lid is only open an inch or two. This necessitates getting a knife to prise the rest of the lid off. As the bit that has been opened is razor-sharp this practice should only be attempted while wearing industrial-strength leather gloves, otherwise lacerated fingers. When the process inevitably results in a buckled, still closed lid, a tin-opener has to be deployed. This is fine until you get to the rounded corners of the tin when the opener jams and you sprain your wrist trying to move it. At this point the tin falls off the opener, always lid-side down, and results in a puddle of oil on the floor. As you step forward to get a cloth, with which to clean up the mess, you skid on the oil and sprain your ankle.

Corned beef tins? Easy-peasy. It takes guts to attempt sardines. :D

A vice and pliers are the best tools for sardines and corned beef tins. :D Never had any trouble with them........ well yet anyway. :p

Well it did stop bleeding but its still very deep everyone keeps saying to me to take a trip up to the hospital i do need a tetanus jab anyway so i think i will go just to have it looked at if it were up to me i wouldnt go it not like my thumb is hanging off but its better to be safe than sorry especially when everyone keeps giving me horror stories " you dont know how long that tin of corned beef has been in the warehouse before you got to it" oh you have to have a tetanus you might get lockjaw etc etc...

It hurts more because its on my right thumb and i need to use it for everything!!

I wonder how long it will be before some one sues Fray Bentos for damages incurred in opening a tin of corned beef. :rolleyes:

Yes Willow Nasty corned beef tin when i did it i threw the tin on the side and i wouldnt touch it again!! A friend had to get it out the tin!!! lol

As I get older and the strength in my fingers dissipates I have problems with ring pulls and the ‘key’ that comes with sardines and corned dog. Not to mention getting my $1 coin back out of a supermarket trolley.

I still prefer to use a can opener whenever possible but sadly that isn’t very often although on some ring pull cans you can still use a can opener at the other end. I believe that they call it progress.

If I can get the ‘key’ to work its way around the corned dog can, usually with the help of a pair of pliers, the real problem is getting the meat out of the can without ending up with several lumps instead of one complete chunk of the said corned dog. Opening a can of sardines is a different ball game though and I’ve given up having sardines. It’s not worth the hassle.

Taking Warfarin concentrates the mind near sharp objects so I am extra careful when opening tins.
