Taxing more of your freedom.

Caught the tail end of BBC World News last night, wherein the topic was the proposed tax on air travel in the U.K. Presumably, this is meant to discourage flight and aid in the fight against "global warming". What a crock! How much more taxation are you willing to bear? It seems that the government is constantly on the prowl in an effort to curb your freedom and force you to change the way you live. Had enough yet?

we already have CO2 and airport taxes; the idea is simply to bung 'em up more. However, on average people in the UK travel (other than by car) a hell of a sight more than people in the US, where I believe, less than 10% of the population poccess a passport. I think the intention of this proposal is to stop our little island from growing into one big concrete airport.

Areoplanes are a global problem. They use a tonne of fuel- I once heard that one trip accross the atlantic is more than all the fuel in all the cars of a formula one season combind! On top of this the fuel isn't taxed- which country would they pay it to?

The country has comitted to reduce C02 emissions and areoplanes are one of the worst offenders- what other options are there?

If you buy into the "human activity is responsible for everything" mantra, then continue on this path - and watch as your economy falters and your choices diminish. Improved technologies are the better option.

On Americans and foreign travel......comment exchange between Johnathan, Ron and Wendy on www.vagablogging.net/03-09/americans-are-nomadically-challenged.html I do not count myself amongst the nomadically challenged. Not fond of beaches - but love the history. The studly Enrico and I will be trotting off to Italy again the first of next year. We are by no means "ugly Americans." And golly gee whiz, I even speak the lingo! However, I still prefer to travel around the U.S. Marvelous country.

We are payin through the nose for barm pot ideas and the govenments humunges errors to the point that the wage you earn wont be enough to live on without state support ie working tax credits.

They want to curtail the use of the cheap flights to the continent...flights to Malaga for £10 (one way)........that is for the hoi polloi...but it is Ok for the politicians to drive gas guzzling limos and use helicopters etc for their own travel.
And as for taxes ...well, we are keeping the families of militant ethnics in the custom to which they have so easily become used to. It seems to me that anyone can come here and claim benefits whether they have earned them or not.
A case in point is the 7 foot Pakistani woman who is claiming asylum here because she says she gets bullied back in her homeland......she is on benefits......has a rent and rate free flat and is paid 40 quid a week.....she also says she can't work because she is a diabetic......eh, how many diabetics hold down full time jobs? Oh, yes and she gets all her diabetic treatment free here...she would have to pay for it back in Pakistan.
The government has given her a two year temporary visa...but I'll bet you a pound to a pinch of donkey droppings that she gets full residency status after that.

And NO I'm not being racist......I'm just being a realist. You can't go giving money from the public purse to folk who have not paid into the system....not unless you want to be taxed out of existence like we are.

I'd emigrate but no-one will have me.

According to a recent article in one of the Chicago papers, the UK portion of taxes and fees was a bit more than $61.00 (about 32 GBP). Considering that the total cost of the ticket was a bit over $500, the UK seems to be getting a good bite out of my wallet already - as is the US!

Re: Taxing more of your freedom.

I don't want to appear overly partisan here, but the plan to tax cheap flights has not come from the Government. It is, in fact, a Tory plan that has come from Mr Cameron. Apparently he and his fellow Old Etonian chums will still be able to fly where they want but they will price poorer people out of flying!
