Re: Music Zone
curiously
how much would they be wantin fo the shop? would you know that lindsey? |
Re: Music Zone
the shops probably rented from HBC mani
|
Re: Music Zone
Not a clue how much the rent is Mani;I think half the problem with this chain is that the manager never really had "ownership" of the store;you never saw your profit and loss, your overheads etc,if I had that kind of info I might have seen it coming! Maxwell, the Editors t shirts have already gone-shipped back to Warehouse ,presumably they were Sale or return and the Administrators wanted the cash back! The issue of people buying from the supermarkets has certainly had an effect;just to give you an example,Asda were selling Pirates of the Caribbean 2 dvd at £8.97 just before Xmas, that was nearly £5 cheaper than we were buying it at from our suppliers! So in the long run it's the supermarkets to blame I think; when customers ask me why it £3 cheaper at Tesco I just say we don't sell mushrooms or greetings cards which carry huge mark ups;and you could try getting a member of staff at one of the supermarkets to answer a music or film related question and see how far you get.We tried to be competitive and to be honest we are better than HMV but it's the same old story, sadly it's like history repeating itself, the Our Price here made money and was well used but that wasn't enough to save us;I am looking for a career change now, retail just isn't a safe bet any more.
Thanks to all of you guys who shopped with us;I reckon we may have another fortnight of hanging on with ever depleting stock! |
Re: Music Zone
Very sad news Lindsay.
Most of my music collection is from Music Zone and bought at great value. I never buy chart stuff so that was never an issue, Music Zone is the only music store in town that has a proper music library and I will miss it greatly. All the best for your career aswell. |
Re: Music Zone
Lyndsay,i'm very sorry it's looking so bleak & i wish you & the staff all the very best for the future.I'll say so myself if i call in.Now i don't want to appear like a vulture waiting for scraps after my Editors t-shirt request, but Queens "sheer heart attack",it was in the 2 for atenner sale not long ago,& now its £9.97,can you put it back to the sale price in one last act of rebellion against those corporate whores who sold you out. Will the helpme@musiczone website still be going, for the titles you do'nt stock
|
Re: Music Zone
Will have a look if we still have the Queen cd for you! Think the website is still going at the moment but it's only stuff that's in stock at the warehouse...suppliers seem a little reticent in letting us have anything at the moment!
Thanks again for your support on here everyone,I will pass it on at work tomorrow. |
Re: Music Zone
I think it's a damn shame that Music Zone will be closing with the loss of four full time and two part time jobs when anyone who shopped there knows it's a damn fine shop with helpful and knowledgeable staff. I for one will sorely miss it.
BTW if anyone wants badly photocopied bootlegged (cd burnt) copy of a chart album I hear Custard Cube in the Market Hall is knocking them off at three quid a pop. AND YOU STILL THINK IT'S A MYSTERY WHY MUSIC ZONE ARE CLOSING?????????????????? |

Re: Music Zone
I'm really sorry to hear this shop is closing for the sake of the hard working staff and for the sake of Accy too which will be all the poorer without it. Music shops are going the way bookshops did when supermarkets started selling cheap paperbacks.
Perhaps there could be a niche for a specialist music shop which only sold/sells things which the supermarkets won't stock. It's impossible to compete against something which can undercut your purchase price. |
Re: Music Zone
Unfortunately Willow you tend to need a big catchment area for that type of shop hence they tend to be in cities like Manchester rather than towns like Accy.
Either that or teh owner is running it as a hobby and doesn't need it to make money. |
Re: Music Zone
It's a pity Accy/Hyndburn can't reinvent itself into "that cute little town where you can find something different" - with interesting specialist shops and an interesting enough centre to bring people in.
I've noticed little shops in Hebden Bridge for example which sell the same sort of things I've seen for sale in other shops or even market stalls but able to command higher prices because they are not just limited to selling to locals. Of course that little old fashioned idea called adverising helps a lot. I would love to see Accy transformed into one of those dream images the students came up with last year and to encourage people to come here and to seek out our specialist little shops. Instead we seem to be in a downward spiral of yet more cheap charity/pound shops which are all very well and I shop in the latter and donate to the former but we need more than that. |
Re: Music Zone
Thw one shop that seems to have found it's niche, and has been there for over thirty years, is the sex shop!
|
Re: Music Zone
Did there used to be two of those or was one an adult video shop? I just recall the sign saying "enter round the back"
