I used to tell my daughter that the main aim of guys was to get into her knickers.......and advised her to carry a spare pair so that the said guy could do so without her getting into any trouble.

No you did not misinterpret my words, this was my opinion of the situation as I see it from a 'geriatric' point of view, I was generalising and you have turned it into a thirteen year old senario. Thirteen year olds are the exeptions not the rule, I was refering to the more 'mature' teenagers and young people who know full well what they are doing.

As for the effectiveness

Combined Oral Contraceptive Pill - claim 99.8%

Birth Control Questions - claim 98%

The Pill - Birth Control Pills - Oral Contraception at www.Birth-Control-Comparison.info from Cedar River Clinics - claim 92-99.7%

As I mentioned before using a condom + the pill is pretty much 100% effective.

Well speaking from the perspective of a Gynaecology Nurse with almost 30 years experience, I can tell you that these statistics refer to people who use these medications correctly....and even then they are questionable.
I have met so many girls and women who hav put their hand on their heart and told me that they have used the medication according to the manufacturers instructions, but on more close questioning they will admit to having had too much to drink....vomitting and thereby losing the effectiveness of the oral contraceptive....then not taking adequate other precautions(as advised in the literature contained in EVERY pack) for the prescribed length of time....hey presto pregnancy. Taking antibiotics which negate the effect of the pill and not taking other adequate precautions as advised on the literature in every pack....Having a dose of the runs and not taking adequate other precautions etc.
Mostly user failure....so there you go...not as straight forward as you might believe. Some women just cannot tolerate the oral contraceptive.......despite many changes of product. I could go on and on. The best and safest/surest way is to say NO !

Re: Condoms For Children

According to news reports today, STD's and viral infections have increased by 2% over the last year amongst young adults and homosexuals, so not getting any better, is it ? Good news is Herpes is down.

Thing is when periods and hormonal changes begin to take place, this is the body telling you that you are ready to 'Go forth and multiply', but of course, due to social conditions and wanting our children to have a better education and fun before they settle down, it is not sensible to indulge in sex before 16 (just an age put on this by the Govenment to keep us in some sort of order).

But Emzie, from 13 - 15 years, not all teenagers find it easy not to succumb. Suppose a bit like having an itch and not being able to scratch it until you are 16, so of course, these things can happen and if they do, best to have the knowledge and ready available birth control methods to keep you from harm. I don't think it will encourage any young lady (course the lads will always be up for it) to have sex underage just because they have been handed a condom if they, like you are I am sure, have been educated in a moralistic and sensible way in these matters.

Katex, well said! Educate about prevention of pregnancy, but also incorporate sensible moral principles.

There's a really interesting article in today's Sunday Times, for anyone who is interested.

The truth about gymslip mothers - Times Online

'Teenage pregnancy costs the NHS £63m, and if a young mother isn't in work or training for the first three years of her child's life, she will cost £19,000-25,000, the government estimates, apart from housing benefits, for which no figures are published. '
