Haven't the press grammatial standards
 

I really thought that media corporations would at least grammar and spell check before they published. Well after reading about my own home town here Lancashire Telegraph: Your East Lancs: Great Harwood: Your Great Harwood news

It is obvious I was sadly mistaken. This is littered with spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, and makes me feel that the third estate has chucked away anything resembling English as it was taught.:mad:

ah i emailed a womens magazine a few weeks ago about spelling, it was atrocious(sp), i'm not the worlds best speller but this was ridiculous, i havent heard a thing back from them, wonder why

I am more irritated by the atrocious grammar than spelling mistakes. Even the so-called "quality" newspapers don't seem to have a proper grasp of punctuation. I always understood that, at least, A level English was a requirement for a career in journalism. It seems like many journalists today barely scraped a grade C in GCSE.

Surely there can be no excuse for spelling mistakes, all you have to do is use spell-check. You can go one step further and look in a dictionary!!!

I agree and this really winds me up. Once upon a time you only usually saw these errors on the signs of cheapo shops and market stalls/cafes. Now they're all over. I have spotted them in newspapers, books, birthday cards and on the television. Vauxhall had a big advert in the Telegraph and it was plastered all over their showroom in Blackburn. It was advertising the cars they sell and stated in big letters,
ASTRA'S, CORSA'S, VECTRA'S. How can they make mistakes like this?:confused:
How are we to teach our children the correct way when all around us we see blatant errors like these? I remember the Iceland slogan that when it first came out said 'That's why mum's go to Iceland'. I thought 'Mum's what goes to Iceland?' People complained and it was corrected but why did it go out like that in the first place?:confused:
Punctuation, spelling and grammar don't even seem to matter in the exams and I think this is ludicrous! As long as you get your point accross to the examiner reading your paper they will not knock off marks for incorrect spelling,punctuation etc. Well they should knock marks off and it does matter!:mad:

Ah, the ubiquitous apostrophe. It seems to have come into existence in the last 20 years, before that no one seemed to use the apostrophe even where they should.

The Lancashire telegraph is renowned for its spelling mistakes, Hubby & I often remark on how many there are. A couple of weeks ago one of the reports was about driveways made from 'bitchermen', (bitumen). Ridiculous.

Well I can safely say that due to my grammatical skills,well lack of them I could not comment with a straight face. Though, I do agree that as has been suggested, by Willow, the employment of proof readers is needed. As for spell check I have one on my browser but it leans towards American spelling, hence my bad spelling due to not trusting my spell checker.
