Easy way to stop smoking.....

Well I have quit smoking now!! and I feel very good about myself for it.

I have the help of Allen Carr's - Easy way to stop smoking book and I finished it last night. I had my last ciggie at 9pm and I will never ever have another!!

This book is fantastic. I can't explain how!! ( which is very weird ) but believe me, it is.

Have you ever read it?? or are you interested in giving up smoking?? (( well the latter question is silly really, every smoker wants to give up smoking, who wants to fill themselves with poisonous gases, that slowly kills them))

Please give this book a try!! I promise you will see smoking differently ( a hell of a lot differently ) and if it can help me, it can help anyone....

Please please give it a go!! you will be very surprised, I was and still am.

Try the book margaret!! it isn't about willpower, it's about the way we train our brain!!

Allen carr was a 60 to 100 a day ciggie smoker!! and he stopped .... just like that ..... and with how he explains it all, it is possible. He said the worst way to stop smoking is to cut down, bit by bit, because all day everyday, you are just waiting for that special CIGGIE. And it becomes to control your life!! That is what this book is all about, how to make it stop controlling your mind!!

It's worth a go margaret!! Even if after you have read his book, you can't just give up, you have nothing to lose!!

One of the things it says is don't stop until you have finished the book. I read Chapter 2 about 3 years ago and not got any further, therefore I haven't stopped smoking yet :)

Yes it does say " don't stop smoking til after the book " although by half way through the book, I didn't want to smoke. So the bit where he tells you to light one up, I didn't because i just really really didn't want to have a ciggie any more!!

My friend only read half of it!! whats the point in that?? lol

I don't know how it works HR!! I am still quite spooked ..... Today has been ace. Usually when I give up, I can't get the thought of a ciggie out of my head.
Yes today I have had the odd " Oh I would have had a ciggie now " like after a meal but, it hasn't been the normal " OMG I need a ciggie, right now "

I would tell any body to give it a go!! I don't know how it works, but as long as it is, I don't care :D

I think it may involve a type of self hypnosis. Many years ago I had anti smoking hypnosis with a practitioner - but the effects only lasted 2 days.
Dont pass that book on yet - you might need to read it again :D

I know what you mean Bernie, but Allen Carr say's " you shouldn't save for anything in particular, as when you have finally bought it, you get a feeling of there is nothing left to quit for now as you have achieved your goal ".
But I suppose if I just save the money, and not aim for anything particular! then I should be ok.:D I worship this man like a Christian with the bible at the moment!! what ever he has done to me has worked, and I don't want to get thrown off course lol

I have made sure I keep it, just in case I need to read it again!! But I can 100% tell you I will never touch another ciggie in my life!!

Thats the funny thing!! you will find the money from ANYWHERE to smoke, same as a Heroin addicts will find it for Heroin

Re: Easy way to stop smoking.....

When I reduced my ciggies down from 35 to 18 it coincided with making my own roll ups. I use filters and a rolling machine. I think that rolling tobacco probably is higher in nicotene which is why I smoke fewer. What I am NOT getting is the addictive chemicals that cigarette makers add - I actually find that I still crave them!!!!

I tried Paul Mckenna's quit smoking. It helped for a little while but has soon as I stopped listening to the tape. I was smoking just as much.
At the end of the day you need to really want to give up and some will power.
Congratulations Slinky. Keep up the good work.

The more often you get hypnotised the easier it is to 'go under'.
I've been hypnotised 4 times by therapists and twice by entertaining hypnotists.

Sure I will SJ....

38 hours as a non-smoker now :D I can't believe the benefits already!! I can smell absolutely anything, and my taste buds have never been so good. My chest is feeling better too ( this was the reason I gave up by the way, horrible cough and pains in my chest ) Thankgod, I haven't had one since giving up!!

How do I feel??

On top of the bloody world!! Yesterday morning I woke up and as I said in another post I got the feeling of " Oh I would have had a ciggie now " BUT NOT " oh I need one, I need one right now!! " kind of thing.

This morning, not even that!! I woke up and after making myself a cup of coffee thought ' God this feels good to not smoke, I feel fantastic and very proud of myself '. The thought of ever smoking again fills me with dread and horror, and would be an absolute night mare. It's like a non-smoker, that has never smoked, telling you he is going to start smoking at 50 years old!! It would be dreadful, and that is how I feel if I even attempt to think of having a ciggie ever again.

I know people have said that this book hasn't worked for them, But by Christ I can't thank this Allen Carr bloke enough!! I have never found it as easy to give up smoking in my life, and it is all down to that book, and the right words he says!!

Thanks for your interest Steeljack :D Hope I haven't bored you too much :D

Re: Easy way to stop smoking.....

Well done Slin ky, might give the book a try sometime in the future.

Googeled it: (Allen Carr's Easyway To Stop Smoking - Lancashire Clinic)

Allen Carr's Easyway to Stop Smoking

Do you want to stop smoking, easily, immediately without withdrawal pangs and without the use of aids and gimmicks?

The Method

Allen Carr, a chain-smoker for 33 years, discovered in 1983 what we'd all been waiting on... a cure for smoking.

His method will work for any type of smoker; young or old, light or heavy, casual or otherwise. It works using a combination of psychotherapy and hypnotherapy and concentrates on the reasons why people do smoke as opposed to why they shouldn't.

Fear keeps people smoking - fear that they will never be able to enjoy life again if they stop smoking. Allen Carr's method removes these fears to allow people to see that they can be happier as non smokers without feeling deprived of anything.

The method is delivered using no gimmicks, no lasers, no herbs, no shock treatment, no patches, no inhalators, no gum! AND best of all, NO WITHDRAWAL PANGS. It's instantaneous and EASY.

slinky 19-10-2007 20:39

Re: Easy way to stop smoking.....

And I can vouch that all the above is true (( well for me it is ))

Every time I have tried to give up, I have been moody and down right irritable.
In the end I just think " this is no good, I can't do it " and start smoking again.

This time I feel great. I'm not moody or irritable!! I'm not perminatly thinking ' OMG I need a fag ' .... The only thing that keep going through my head is " wow I can't believe I have stopped smoking " and that is in a good way!!

Give it a try Sara, it's no lose situation!!

Yes. you have to be sure you want to give up, or it isn't any use. Probably thats why it doesn't work for some people. Either they are not reading it word for word, and all the way through!! OR they don't want to give up.

That is a little harsh I know but I find it hard to believe you actually enjoy being addicted.

It’s a defence/face saving mechanism.

Sara probably really does want to give up smoking but having heard horrendous tales of how difficult it is for some people to stop, the easy option is to declare, “I don’t want to give up just yet.” It gets her off the hook so to speak.

Speaking of old ash trays Neil, where can I get some decent ones now ? .. having just newly decorated downstairs, feel that my 'Thwaites Draft Beers' and 'Mackesons Original and Genuine' are not in keeping any more.

Won't be able to 'acquire' them from the pubs now. Do you think I ought to keep the above mentioned to sell on E-Bay at a later date ?

Guess that was one lost income for ash tray makers .. wonder what they will do to make up this loss ? Suggest chewing gum dispensers.

AND all of the above isn't true either!! Gosh I have just realized in the past 10 seconds that, everything Allen Carr say's about " what smokers will say to try and justify why they smoke " is absolutely true. And he explains why it is all a load of old TRIPE!!

and I am sorry but he wins this argument hands down, and that is coming off an Ex smoker ( myself ) That used to believe all the BRAINWASHING things about smoking ...... ' I enjoy it, I won't enjoy my social life without it, I will be miserable' etc..... Nothing makes you more miserable than smoking.

I can give you lots of things that are positive about giving up.
I can't give you 1 thing that is positive about carrying on!!

Sara said she doesn't want to give up JUST YET because :

She is Scared stiff. She is frightened that she will be miserable for weeks and weeks, and won't enjoy life for weeks and weeks, while she is trying to get over the drug addiction.

I promise if you read the book I have just read, there is nothing to worry about!! You won't be miserable. You will still enjoy life, and you will even start to feel sorry for smokers that make excuses about " Oh I don't want to quit yet, Oh but I enjoy it " etc :D

You won't even ENVY a person when you see them having a ciggie, you will more than likely feel sorry for them.

You will have to read the book. I suppose if someone would have told me all this last week, I would have told them to ******** go away in short jerky movements!! :D

Just another thing!! give the book a go!! If you all don't stop smoking after it, there is nothing to lose!!

I remember the bit in the book where Allan Carr says that smoking is not pleasurable. It is merely a device to keep the withdrawal symptoms at bay. He likens it to banging your head against a brick wall in order to feel better when you stop.

My trouble is that I really do enjoy having a fag. I always have.

Addiction is a compulsion to do something, although enjoyment may come into it but is not the driving force.

Smokers are in denial and to save from having to admit it and lose face they come up with all sorts of excuses why they smoke. One of them being “I enjoy a fag after a meal or whatever”.

It is the same with alcoholics. They will deny that they are addicted and usually trot out things like, “ a glass of xxxxx helps me relax” or whatever.

As a smoker for some 56 years who has stopped in the past for well over a year I think that I can speak with a modicum of authority on this issue.

We smokers are ADDICTED to smoking. Whether it is to the nicotine content or the physical act of taking a fag out of a packet, lighting up and puffing away doesn’t really matter. Although I suspect that the latter is more of an addiction than the former. That is why all ‘stop smoking’ aids like patches all include the words “some will power will be needed” or words to that effect.

Until the smokers admit it to themselves their chances of quitting are not good and console themselves with a multitude of excuse why they don’t want to quit.

That about sums it all up Jambutty!!

Something that made me think ' OMG YES ' was Allen Carr said " people often say to me ' it's just something to do with my hands ' as he say's, why light it then?? If it is just because you need something to do with your hands, why do you light the ciggie?? :D now get out of that one :D

Well, I like Lilly enjoy smoking (just the bits in between when I can't have one that I don't enjoy :D)

I am not sure that I am genuingly giving excuses to myself, or just trying to justify/placate other people to shut them up, now it is so controversial.

I have found myself making verbal excuses to non-smokers. On the other hand, I have told them strongly that I am not prepared to make any excuses to them and what I do so 'sod off'!

I wouldn't bother with the tablets hun!! honest, go straight for the book!!

If the book doesn't work, then start the tablets, but I bet you £5 that you won't need the tablets after the book!! You are already in the frame of mind to stop, so the book will help.

I think that is why the book didn't help lilly, she said she read it twice and nothing happened, but then said she doesn't want to give up anyway as she enjoys it. Thats why the book didn't work.

You're right Slinky. I wanted to have a go at giving up for financial reasons really but I do love having a fag and missed it something shocking when I tried to stop. The book won't work if you are not desperate on all counts to stop.:)

I really don't believe all this " medicines to help you quit " thing.

How can giving your body Nicotine through other sources help you to quit??

Actually what most people find is that, when they get hooked on the " medicines that have helped you quit " they start back on the ciggies because they need that fix. This ends in being Addicted to both ciggies, and the thing that was going to " help " Very clever the government and health services

Re: Easy way to stop smoking.....

50%, or maybe more, of all the fags that we smoke we do not do so for the nicotine content. We do it out of the habit of lighting up. And it is this habit part that is the bit that is so difficult to break. Ask a habitual nail biter if they can stop biting their nails.

When I stopped smoking several years ago I set myself out a plan of action. I sat back and identified all those fags that I lit up out of habit and targeted them as my first line of attack as well as where I smoked.

Out went the ashtray in the bedroom, the one in the bathroom and in all rooms except the living room. I resolved that the only place that I would have a fag would be in the living room. If I had to leave the living room whilst smoking a fag I would put it out first.

I then decided that I would only smoke a fag on the half hour and the hour.

I decided not to smoke on short car journeys or on the move in any way, like walking to the local shop or whilst pottering in the garden. My smoking would be limited to being sat down in the living room.

I resolved to delay lighting a fag for 5 minutes after taking it out of the packet. I would take the fag out of the packet, put it in my mouth, reach for my lighter but not light the fag, then deliberately put the lighter down, take the fag out of my mouth and place it back in the packet. After 5 minutes, which did mean clock watching to begin with, I allowed myself to light the fag or I punished myself a bit further by delaying it for a further five minutes. If I managed to do that, my reward was to smoke the fag. I continued that way for the whole day. Sometimes I would forget to reward myself and it got to the next half hour before I realised.

To show myself that I had control over my addiction, when I did light a fag I would take a couple of puffs then dock it. Sometimes I would keep the stump in my mouth for a while until I got fed up of it being there, so it went behind my ear. Or it was left in the ashtray to taunt me.

The next day the delay was 10 minutes. The next day it was 15 minutes. The day after half an hour and finally one hour.

This routine for more than a week almost broke the habit of lighting up or at least brought it under MY CONSCIOUS CONTROL.

I deliberately refused offers of fags from family and friends as they lit up.

After a couple of weeks or so my smoking had dropped from 30 or more per day to less than 10.

Being in control of when and where I lit a fag the next step was to not light up until noon with the next one not until after tea and the last one before going to bed. 3 a day hardly seemed worth smoking so one morning I put fags, lighter and ashtrays away and went about my daily life that extended for over a year.

Sadly a burglary, which also wrecked my living room just weeks after I had got it some bit like, badly unnerved me. The kindly policewoman who had been despatched to investigate and take a statement saw how badly I was unnerved and made me a cup of tea and offered me a fag. Unconsciously I took it and smoked it and got back onto the tobacco road again.

I should point out that the burglary occurred the day after being discharged from hospital after a second heart attack. I was in no condition to be hit with that sort of trauma.

I’ve never looked back since and continued to keep the government solvent so that it could waste my money on illegal wars and crackpot schemes.

My trouble is that I really do enjoy having a fag. I always have.

What, the bit about me enjoying having a fag? I really do though. I'm not a heavy smoker. I smoke about 10 a day and I do enjoy them. I don't smoke on the move, always when I'm sitting down with a cup of tea (or something stronger in the evening) and I really do enjoy them! :D

I know that they are bad for me and they cost a lot. This is why I tried to give up but I just missed them so much! I gave up for the 9 months that I was pregnant for the health reasons. I know that this was the right thing to do. According to the Allan Carr book giving up should not feel like a sacrifice but it did to me!

10 a day is nearly £1,000 in a year. Up to £50,000 for your retirement. Enjoy spending that instead.

Enjoy your curtains and soft furnishings not getting stained with tobacco smoke. Not just yours but from smoking friends who visit. With no smoke in your house you wouldn’t have to clean your windows as often or wipe down the woodwork and not forgetting things like the telly, hard chairs etc.

You gave up for 9 months so you can do it again without having to get pregnant. You know you can - you just need a gentle push in the right direction.

DON’T LIGHT THAT NEXT FAG.

Make a conscious effort to put it back in the packet and then look at your clock and YOU decide when you are going to light it. Come on! Five or ten minutes isn’t going to make that much difference is it? Then if you must, light it or YOU decide to wait just another five minutes.

But you will have wrested control of your smoking from a self confessed pleasurable habit to conscious effort. Do the same with each fag that you take out of the packet but extend the time.

You will be chucking them away in no time and having the pleasure of spending the money that you save. You will have replaced one pleasure with another.

Well said Katex, at least we're two smokers alike. Don't all shout at me at once for starting again, but i did give up a few years back for just over four years then obviously started again. What i found was the amount of spare time i had especially in the mornings. I smoke outside, so for every ciggie i had i had an extra five mins. My hubbie keeps nagging me to give up, but at the moment i don't want to.

The bottom line is that nicotine is an addictive drug. A book aint gonna do dip sh*t. It's an addiction, same as any other drug, it takes more than leafing through a book to sort an addiction out, you know it, we all know it. Problem is, you're hooked(but in denial) same as rest of us smokers. Legislation needs to be made so that our youngsters dont make our mistakes, question is, will government forego the revenue they get in taxes???, Doubt it... Why am I in denial?? I have QUIT!! I wouldn't call that in denial... I just think that to an extent you are being hoodwinked by a book, you could have given up by yourself, you never needed the damned book. It came from within yourself, your own will and strength. Well all I can say is why hit out at the book??
If anything all it ever did was GOOD!! nothing at all bad has happened!!
I managed to give up after reading it, it did me good. Can't get any lower than smoking, so the only way was up! and that's the way I chose, whether it was the book that did it, or just me, there was only good to come out of it! And I would rather pay 1 off fee of £5, to risk my chances, than keep spending £5 per day per 20 pack for the rest of my life, because I think " YEAH RIGHT AS IF A BOOK CAN HELP " :)

My cry baby whiny assed opinion is ...that the author is makin hard cash outta good folks like yourself's misery. The book maybe planted a seed, but the author can take no plaudits for this, the effort was yours. The fact is, you can only advise an adictee. The addict of whatever substance has to do it for themselves. Glad you done it, how long since your last smoke?
