The censorship has not been applied to Radio 2.

Given that Radio 1 is generally aimed at a the teenage/college/uni market does this mean that todays youth are easily offended or is it because they pick up on anything not politically correct to create a storm ?

its pathetic...

but this should be censored

It's not as if it's a new song and nobody has ever heard the word before!

As for Shane MacGowan - a face only a mother could love?

Surprised they haven't banned the name of the band.

Due to public demand they have now done a u-turn and uncensored it.

Wonder if they can now start running the country, despite the first cock-up at least they listened and acted :)

It's a good job the song doesn't say 'you & your faggots', then it would be offensive :D

Seriously though, the lyrics are in 'call and answer me' form; a conversation between two fictional characters. I would like to know who exactly has taken offense at this, and give them a gigantic slap across the face with the letters R, E, A, L, I, T, Y stamped across my palm.

Radio 2 all the way :)

:confused:This is a problem in a country where cigs are fags:confused: Ah well, pass the faggots and peas. (I think there might be a joke in there somewhere ... a delicate play on the themes of man-to-man love, and the dangers of flatulence) Must be a real shortage of news on that side of the pond. What you need is a blizzard to take your minds off things:D

Anyone with any common sense would see that this is not really a question of political correctness and censorship at all, its another way of attracting publicity in the medias direction, in this case radio 1.

Young people aren't easily offended, in fact I think the majority of young people enjoy a bit of offensive banter, as do most people. Would comedians be successful if they didn't say things a bit out of line every now and again?

Look how successful the likes of older comedians, say for example Roy Chubby Brown, and younger ones like Jimmy Carr are, and they make jokes that have crossed the line all the time and people of all ages enjoy their acts. Faggot is hardly a highly offensive word, and I think everyone my age has an uncle that seems to say a swear word at every oppurtunity. If people are offended by the word Faggot then they need to get out more.

What the hell is the world coming too. Absolutely fantastic song. You know when its christmas when you hear it. I heard it on TMF on freeview today and it was censored and i thought WTF it wasnt censored on Saturday when i heard it! It draws more attention to it when its censored than when it isnt. STUPID

Amazing how everybody who responded to this thread never spotted it. We just needed some expertise and wisdom to point it out :D

Well I wasn't implying that the people who had already commented had no common sense, but its pretty obvious that they censored it for the attention.

The radio has never been shy to banning songs that they thought where unsuitable, I believe one of Alanis Morisettes songs got banned from air completely rather than censored, and that was in the 90's, when nobody even mentioned the term 'politically correct'.

If it was a new song then I may feel more compelled to say it is just a simple censorship and perhaps a PC issue, but when the song is an old favourite at xmas time, I just get the impression that its to attract attention to the radio station. Only no publicity is bad publicity.

But Radio 1 wasn't the only one to censor it - and it's not as if the song needs publicity.

Does this also mean that the BBC will no longer be "beeping" out the name of Guy Gibsons dog whenever they show the original Dambusters film ?

It has always been a favourite Christmas song of mine, and always will be.
Radio 1 just trying to get publicity for a rubbish music station, in my opinion.
