It's going to get too longwinded to say 'please pass this note to your parent, guardian or whoever makes up your family unit'.

When I was at school they used to say 'parent or guardian', and I went to a conservative (with a small 'c') catholic school - perhaps we were ahead of our time and didn't know it! :D

Absolutely ridiculas!!

I remember when my kids were small and whilst at school they obviously made mothers day and fathers day cards to bring home. However there were children there who didn't have a mum or a dad for whatever reason, and the teachers were aware of it and worked with those children helping them to make a card for whoever they wanted. No fuss was made at all and the children were happy.

It makes it seem now that you are penalised for getting married, having children and having a mummy and daddy at home.:(

I went to a catholic school as well. Thats obviously why I don't understand the fuss, parents were parents, guardians were guardians. I dont think we bothered ceebrating fathers day at school, though I remember making mothers day stuff.

I dont think I found much opportunity to talk about either parent either, though I would be interested to know what they would do about readers if that was the case, as early reading books teach the words 'mum' and 'dad'.

Somebody better tell David Cameron to be politically correct now. Here's one of his recent comments;


Mr Cameron said there was a need for "a culture change in Britain" to encourage couples to stay together. "It's not a moralising point, it's not a religious point but the evidence shows that kids do best if mum and dad are there to bring them up, and the evidence shows that marriage is a good institution which encourages people to commit to each other and to stay together."

Seriously though I can see a large change coming soon. I can see a politician or someone senior standing up one day and going "this is stupid". He`ll get pelted by all the PC brigade (of which I am sure there is only 3 in the entire country who have made this little cottage industry for themselves) and secretly everyone else will be going "good on you".

a good example is one I saw in the paper. Burglar was headbutted after trying to escape (the owner was a kick boxer). The judge actually said "You deserved it and you are lucky you didnt get more" . Now if he stands for parliament he`ll get my vote. Get more of these judges. Give the silent majority a voice. My son (currently 2 1/2) can call me daddy, dad , pater, father, old man, oi you whatever but Parent is so impersonal. Can you imagine him introducing his friends to me in future years..." And this is my parent"...load of smelly whatnot...

I often wonder if the politicians who come up with this bs actually believe in it. And in the long run does it really matter. George Carlin discusses pc-ism in his hilarious book "When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops": when confronted with the pc-ism "differently abled" he comes up with this, or something like it: Barry Bonds can't play the cello, Yo Yo Mah can't hit the curve ball ... they are differently abled.

The link confirms what I thought. No-one is suggesting banning the words Mummy and Daddy, they are just asking teachers to make the children aware that not everybody has a Mum and Dad and to show consideration when talking to such children. That seems fine to me.

Perhaps blazey YOU were one of the children the teachers took extra care with, without someone telling them what to do? All they did was make sure you could be involved while other children wrote Fathers day cards?

I had a father, so unless they knew how much I hated him I doubt it. I never said I was brought up by a single parent family did I? Did I miss something?
