The PC brigade are driving me mad

It seems the the term Mummy and Daddy are being band from the class room. It appears teachers have been instructed not to use the "gender specific" words to pupils. Teachers are being urge to use te term parents in an effort to boost childrens awareness of same sex couples. these new rule have been commissioned by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, which aims to teach four to seven year olds that not all children have a mummy and daddy, but some may have say two mummies or two daddies. Ministr Ed Balls has said the policy was desgned to stop bullying on children with same sex parents. Beam me up Scotty

My mum grew up in a house without a daddy.

He'd been killed, aged twenty two, fighting for his country.

When I was a child there were lots of children around, like Rindy's mum, who didn't have a daddy because of the war. Nobody regarded the situation as too ultra-sensitive and, basically, those kids just had to get on with it. Do you know, the majority of them became quite normal adults too?

My mum died when I was 7. If there is such a thing as normal then I've turned out to be it :)

You really have to question if the people running our country are fit for purpose :(

The way society is going there's more chance of kids with, a 'Mummy And Daddy' getting bullied for not being the normal family unit!

Have you got a link to where you read this? I'd like to read it but can't find it.

From what I gather they aren't PUNISHING children for saying mummy and daddy, just persuading them to use the term parent or parents.

I dont see what the problem is. Maybe I'm too modern for this thread.

That's exactly what I was thinking, Blazey. That's why I want to see the story for myself. I find it very hard to believe that the words Mummy and Daddy will actually be BANNED. This can't be done. I am Mummy and no-one will be able to ban that word from my children's vocabulary. :(

I think that teachers are just trying to be sensitive to those who don't live with Mummy and Daddy by addressing their carers as parents.

The term 'parents' is often used more by middle class children as well I've found, so perhaps they want to stop children sounding common! My mum tries to stop me saying 'nehhyt' (haha) instead of 'nowt' then 'nothing' instead of 'nowt'. Its not that she hates the fact we're from Lancashire, she just prefers me to sound 'proper' if you understand what I mean?

She doesn't BAN the words, she just tries to teach me better ways of speaking lol, which is good because the southerners get confused when you start using Lanky Language haha.

What about those children who are brought up by an aunt or a grandparent? Could the word 'parent' not upset them?

This is just out of hand silliness.

I assume then its guardian? on school letters its always referred to as parent or guardian.

Re: The PC brigade are driving me mad

Yes I know that - I get enough of them, but I was referring to the classroom situation. If a child talking about his 'mummy' is asked to refer to her as a parent in case it upsets a child with 2 daddies all I'm saying is that the child calling her a parent could just as easily upset a child who lives with granny.
