Asda Doing Their Bit

Just got some shopping from Asda and they are no longer giving free carrier bags. The new Bag For Life are five pence each. I for one am forever going shopping and not reusing carrier bags so think this is a good way to help the enviroment. Anybody else got loads of carrier bags who will think twice when they are being charged five pence each? The new bags are made from recycled plastic.

Think its a good idea, theres no real need to constantly use bags when you can just reuse them.

While it is a good idea and they are to be applauded, there are many other plastic items that don't seem to be acceptable for recycling. I recently put a washing up bowl in with my plastic waste....the binmen wouldn't take it....apparently it was the wrong sort of plastic????

Yes I read somewhere that bottles and cartons have numbers printed on them somewhere. Whilst I am quite happy to do my bit I draw the line at having to scrutinise everything for a code:(

Perhaps a scheme such as milkmen use with glass bottles would be a good one.

i'll just carry on buying em every time probably. Its too much bother to keep them and then remember to take the buggers.

besides there isn't room in my kitchen between the various bins and recycling boxes!

I think they could do much more: by not having all the plastic on their goods... again its us the general public that have to pay:

My t'other half were there this morning and got half a dozen of the normal carrier bags. Wonder if they've changed it since then, then.
And, how would that work with the self checkout bit?

Re: Asda Doing Their Bit

Morrison's are now doing the recycled bag-for-life thing too.

Cutting back on the freebie plastic carriers is, I suppose, a step in the right direction. At least there will be less of them littering the countryside. I would be more likley to believe Supermarket's new-found green enthusiasm if they were to cut back substantially on the plastic packaging their products come in, or if they exercised a little more restraint in their use of lighting, heating and refrigeration - I am thinking of those enormous characterless tin sheds they use, where a good half of the interior volume is filled with nothing but hot air and massive sodium vapour and halogen lighting. They could also do more to tackle the mountains of waste food packaging and advertising material they produce. Another thing they could do is to stop flying food halfway round the world. As it is dispensing with free plastic bags is merely paying lip service to the idea of conserving the planet's natural resources and combatting climate change.

I Went Today And When I Got To The Till She Tried To Charge Me And I Wasnt Having Any Of It So She Gave Me Them For Free Tyhis Time Its Just A Trial.
Told Her I Would Go To Tesco And She Said They Are Going To Be Doing It As Well!!
But The Plus Whith Tesco Is At Least You Would Get The Points For Each Bag.
They Should At Least Advertise This So People Wouldnt Be Caught Shortlike We Would Of Been.

Re: Asda Doing Their Bit

The food packaging is using far more resources than the carriers, and both are included in the cost of goods bought, I reuse the carriers for various things, and i'm not paying 5p to line the bin with it, when the supermarkets take more care and package less, I will buy carriers, untill then, if I go into asda and do my usual monthly freezer shop (I shop online for the rest), and they dont supply carriers, they can put the lot back on the shelves, or in the freezers, I am willing to bet they will not forego £200 for the sake of a few carriers.

Was in Asda shopping this afternoon. Didn't get charged for my bags. They were placed behind the 'bag for life'. Just took the normal Asda bags, never realised they were meant to be paid for.

Got caught on the hop last week with M & S new policy on this .. must admit the 10p. bag is so much stronger than their last ones. Are Asda's bags stronger now Bernie ? Last week an unlucky customer lost her bottle of wine which went straight through the bottom and smashed on the floor.

M & S do offer you a bag free of charge when it's worn out, so maybe only have to buy the original one ? ...

Need more bags for Asda .. need only one for M & S, but usually four for Asda ... how will these fit in my handbag ? Hummph, will now have to buy larger handbags to accommodate plastic bags.

I don't know.

I use Sainsbury's online and so far have not been charged for carrier bags.

I don't know how they will get round that for online shoppers. Currently they bring the goods to your door in carrier bags in a big blue box so unless they are going to start putting all the items loose into the boxes, I don't know.

It'll be a bit of a faff having to carry individual items through the house.

You don't have to buy them every time.

Save them from the previous week and take them with you to use again next time you go.

My 'free' M & S bag tore by the time I got to the front door of the store the other week, though they are normally very good.

I haven't tried the trade in yet either.

Cheap carriers are the perfect size as liners for my kitchen bin, so when there aren't any anymore, I guess I'll have to buy some proper bin liners, which I suppose isn't very green.

I've just ordered my weekly shopping on line from Asda and no mention on there about being charged for the bags and you do tend to get a ridiculous amount of them when they deliver your shopping, often there's just one item in a bag - although you can give the previous weeks carriers to the driver for recycling.

Asda carrier bags have a secondary use for me. I use them for non-recyclable waste so that my bin doesn’t get coated inside with rotting food.

So now I will have to buy some sort of suitable plastic bag to do the same job.

Someone explain to me where the saving is.

My other point is, do the new carrier bags have the Asda logo or name on them? If so then I, and all the other customers, will be getting charged for advertising Asda. Something wrong there.

I can feel an exchange of words coming up on Friday when I go and do my weekly shop.

I went to morrisons on my lunch break early last week and they had started this... all well and good but..

why not give customers prior notice so they know to bring bags in (which I told them in no uncertain terms was out of order)

and they were giving one longer life bag free per customer and the charity ones were 10p... they may be stronger but you can't fit half as much in as they don't seem very wide!!!!!

I had a right jobsworth too, I do the shopping for the works tuck shop and had bought a massive amount of chewing gum, which is strong mint and I didn't want it to taint any other shopping so I asked for one of the small bags that they wrap meat in and she said she couldn't give me one!!!!!! That was until I kicked up a bit of a fuss, then she said...ok just this once... then I embarrassed the hell out of her by pointing out the next till along who was still giving out the old carrier bags free of charge!!!!!!!!!!

I think the official start date is 1 June, so they are probably just trying to eek out their supply of bags by starting early in some stores.

Tesco home deliveries offer extra Tesco Clubcard points if you specify 'no bags' when you order.
That incentive is better than charging for them.
Better to use a carrot instead of a stick, to cut down on bag usage.

I’m not falling out with you BERNADETTE, just pointing out that if Asda want me to advertise their store they should pay me to do so or at least not charge me for a carrier bag.

This latest ‘green’ move by the supermarkets is nothing more than a cynical exploitation of their customers.

They know that most of the free carrier bags that they supply are re-used as bin liners of one sort or another.

So we will now have to BUY bin liners (more profit for the supermarkets) and the supermarkets will make even more profit by SELLING us carrier bags for 5p each. And then to add insult to injury they get free advertising.

bloody disgusting behaviour from asda if you ask me , i dont want to have to remember to pick up re used shopping bags when i go out to shop and i certainly dont want to have them stored in my home

disposable carrier bags should be kept for those that want them and those that want to use the others can suit themselves

if asda want to save the planet they could use strong brown paper bags like many shops do in america

now the government has sorted out the great plastic bag crisis will they now be able to get on with sorting less important things out like crime and poverty etc

one thing i wonder is how far is this lunarcy going to spread

should i save my bag from next and keep it with me at all times just incase i decide to go and purchase a new item of clothing

bloody pathetic

i bet asda for example are making a right pretty proffit at 5p a carrier bag

They deliver in plastic crates - about the size of milk crates. They are designed to slide on racks in the delivery van and have a number temorarily stuck on each crate so that when the driver looks at them he can get out all those with your allocated delivery number. Chilled and frozen goods travel in a seperate chilled section of the van.

When you specify 'no bags' you still get some - items such as soap powders that smell strong will be seperately wrapped before being put in the crate.

I consider that great care is taken by Tesco to ensure that there is no damage during transit. They have been doing home deliveries longer than Asda and do it better.

I like everyone else used the supermarket bags for lining my litter bins and disposing of un-eaten foods, so yeh, never thought that we would have to buy them now, so not saving much for the environment are we ? Good point.

Ah! But in those days people didn’t do a bulk shop once a week. There were no supermarkets apart from the Co-op and most people didn’t have cars so the corner shop ruled and a weekly trip to the local fruit and veg market.

My weekly foray to Asda rarely fills more than 4 bags but there are many people with larger families who will fill ten or fifteen carrier bags. Imagine having to take 15 shopping baskets with you.

How does that work when they deliver them? Presumably they bring the crates into the house. Do they then wait until you take everything out of the crate and take the crate back?

Yeah when we get deliveries from Tesco they carry the stuff in inside a green tray and wait for you to unload them,it's a really good service and i would highly recommend it.

When I'm doing the dreaded shop, I always take my rucksack, that way all the heavy items are on my back instead of in tacky plastic bags biting into my hands.

If I can't fit it all into the rucksack then like Mick I turn the bag inside out before putting the lighter items and delicates, (such as eggs), into them.

As Loz already said - they wait for you to empty the crates, but not for you to check them against the delivery order list (which Ian Entwisi annoys them by so doing :D)

It is quicker to lift 2 or 3 carriers out of a crate than to lift out all the items individually, which I think is why carriers are used even when you have asked them not to.

From my frequent and earnest observations of defecating dogs ;), I can say that thinner and smaller plastic bags are usually used - and the size colour and consistency of their contents are clearly visible. yuk/hughie

well I did my monthly shop at asda tonight and went prepared, the till girl was laughing her head off at the varied carrier bags I had...

the freezer stuff went in thick o2, topman & matalan bags

I had morrisons, co-op & various clothes stores... she almost cheered when I pulled out an old asda one :D

In fact I didn't use any of their bags on offer at all and they were still handing out the free ones, the 5p ones do look very sturdy and only have asda in really small writing in the middle, but didn't need any of those either

Apparently they have now run out of the 5p bags at Asda Accrington and are having to use the free ones!! People are going mad wanting to know why they were made to buy some the other day.

In defense of Asda though these same people who paid 5p for their re-usable carrier bags didn't bring the bleedin' things with 'em!!

Nowt as queer as folk is there? :D

Re: Asda Doing Their Bit

Armed with 4 free carrier bags gained last week dispersed about my body I set out on my weekly foray to Asda, Grimshaw Park, Blackburn ready to make my point about the carrier bag policy change.

The first thing that I noticed was that there was no ‘Greeter’ around so that sort of spiked my guns a bit. There is no point in whinging at the checkout people. Although they could report back to their supervisor I suppose but it wasn’t really their doing.

Amongst the display of sweets etc adjacent to each checkout I spotted Hessian shopping bags for £1 suitably daubed with the Asda name. Remaining icily calm and collected I asked the checkout girl what the deal was with carrier bags.

Pointing to the dispenser that used to hold the free carrier bags she declared, “These are now 5p each. But they are re-usable.” However the cost of these bags was not posted on the dispenser. In fact there was nothing to indicate that these new carrier bags were for sale and not free. The customer finds out when he asks for one.

The bags that she was referring to were being promoted as being made from re-cycled plastic. I wonder how many people mis-read that and assumed that the bags themselves were re-cyclable? The bags, coloured green, had the Asda name prominently in the centre.

Anyone like to guess which colour is normally associated with Asda and has been long before the green issue became an issue? Correct – Asda livery is green.

So even if these 5p bags did not sport the Asda name it would still be obvious which supermarket they came from.

I declined the offer of the new carrier bags loudly enough for nearby shoppers to hear me, with a comment about not paying Asda money so that I could advertise their store, which prompted the checkout girl to produce a few of the old free ones.

Bought my 1st lot of 5p carrier bags from Asda the other day, I say 1st lot cos no doubt I will forget to take them the next time

These bags are the bags for life, you pay 5p for it and if it breaks, gets a hole in it, is wearing thin, they replace it, for nothing

You are only paying the 5p once, per bag, unless you forget to take them back:rolleyes:

Also, if you take in your own carrier bags, any, M&S, tesco, asda, whichever, they are giving vouchers for schools out, for future recycling equipment

Of course I took the free ones.

When the free ones run out I certainly won’t be buying any bags that show the store name, so turning them inside out becomes academic.

I guess that I will have to revert to the old fashioned way and buy real shopping bags and bin liners.

although not a great deal of money at 5p each if you buy 6 bags of asda thats 30p

that 30p could have got you the better quality sausages instead of the cheaper asdas own

its ok asda saying they are cutting prices but its no good if they are taking the money back from you at the tills by charging you for bags

im pretty damn sure the bags dont cost asda 5p each and in my opinion should be free

next we will have chip shops charging us for wrapping paper unless we take our previous wrapping paper back

you could always do what i've done and BUY A SHOPPING TROLLEY :D

seriously though, i've been using material bags for several months now, i bought mine from tesco and wilkinsons, like tosh said, they are easier on the hands, the tesco and wilki's bags fold up into your handbag and have a little clip on them to make sure they stay folded, definately worth the 45p i paid for them and they will last me ages

Was at Asda today, the lady on the till gave the bloke in front of me an old free bag. She seemed to have a stash of old screwed up carrier bags under her counter , the previously free ones. The used to have a large box in the foyer for putting your old free bags in, wonder if they are sifting through those to hand out to folk.

Anyway, I think I will invest in some proper shopping bags like a few of you lot, it makes good sense.

Been using our own for ages but sometimes you just get a little too much and need one or two extra carriers, I certainly won't be too bothered about paying a few pence extra for them knowing I'll be re-using them.

It’s not the cost but the principle of paying for a carrier bag that bears the issuing store details giving them free advertising.

In any case a decrease in the use of plastic bags will be offset by people buying bin liners.

How long before this government issues instructions that we have to use both sides of the toilet paper?

Metaphoric though that may be .. deserves some Karma.:rofl38:

I was in yesterday afternoon .. there were bags before you actually got to the counter with notice if you wanted one and price. Of course, the young lady asked if I wanted to buy one before I loaded .. remarked "Do I have a choice ?" She replied "Well, you can have some of the free ones if you wish". Being a whimp I said .. No .. go on ... will have a new green one (hadn't a big buy this week).

Remarked to this sweet little thing that "I bet you getting some stick, aren't you?" .. her expression was priceless .. not their fault, although one would hope the Management have preempted this situation and instructions to their staff on how to handle it.

Thing is .. forgot to buy some small bin liners, and had to chuck the remains of my dinner in a huge Jane Norman bag !!

I personally think it's a great idea buying reusable bags wherever they are from.
It really isn't that big a deal taking them with you when you shop and it is better for the enviroment too so what's the harm?
If you take a normal carrier bag from a supermarket it has their name all over it so i don't see the big deal in buying a reusable one with the supermarkets name all over it.

Yes but the ‘normal’ carrier bag was not charged for.

But if you are happy to advertise a supermarket and pay THEM for the privilege then that is up to you.

I object to being used as a bill board and having to pay them for being one.

It is the same with Sky and Virgin etc. You pay to view their programmes that show adverts where the advertiser has paid Sky or Virgin etc. to show them to you. So in effect you are paying to view adverts.

This paying for a re-usable carrier bag, even if it is exchanged free of charge when it no longer becomes usable, is just a cynical money grabbing ploy under the guise of being green. I’ll bet that more people just forget to re-use them so have to buy more each shopping trip than those who re-use them.

Then there is the question of re-using the free bags as bin liners etc. If we, in the interests of hygiene, want to wrap our waste before dumping it in the none-recyclable bin we will have to buy bin liners and that will negate any saving made by stopping free carrier bags.

If Asda is so keen on going ‘green’ it should use its clout to reduce manufacturer packaging and also look at its own packaging policy. Do we really need a bunch of bananas pre-packed in a plastic bag? And other large fruit. Does a whole cucumber really need to be shrink wrapped?

What about all the bottles, tins and cartons that are less than full?

Has anyone noticed how runny jam is these days? Once upon a time not too long ago you could scoop jam out of the jar with a knife or ‘jam’ spoon (if you were posh). Today you have to pour it out or waste time trying to scoop a liquid with a knife.

You dont half talk rubbish. There is something called customer services, you should try them they seem to a better job than a greeter. A greeter greets you so thats why they are called a greeter. They are not called target for grumpy boring old men to moan at.

You are kidding right? How sad. Who really cares if you can see the name? A bag as a purpose and thta is to carry items. It doesnt do a better or worse job either way you put it.
