I think the stamping of feet and dancing on the spot will not be long in coming.
I used the word tactics in a recent thread and was quoted the definition from the services manual, that amused me, if the respondent was to be confronted by anyone other than the one's who think wit is a killer, dream on.

They seem like schoolboy fantasists, getting themselves giddily excited about some Orwellian conspiracy theory. That if there isn't total freedom for every single person, there isn't any freedom at all. Which is quite franky ubbish.

To protect the freedom of all we have to have limits on what is, and what isn't, acceptable.

We, along with most western democracies, have laws in place that prevent people spouting hatred, lies, and untruths. Just as a society there are laws we must abide by, so society can function. If everyone had the 'freedom' to do just as they like, we'd have anarchy.

We even have rules that must be obyed on this forum, to ensure it's fairness and decency. Is that an attack on member's freedom to say whatever they want, in whatever inflammatory, offensive, language they think they have the 'right' to use?

We also have laws that curtail free speech, which are the laws of slander, and defamation, and rightly so.

Perhaps the people who advocate total freedoms are really just anarchists.

Then again I might be making too many presumptions. Just as it would be wrong for anyone to presume our pilot friend, Boeing Guy, doesn't have the greatest sense of direction in the world. As some would say was evidenced when he gave directions from Gatwick to Euston station, when he really meant Heathrow.

(Always end on a humerous note. It's all the rage...apparently.):D

It always disappears the very second you see a glaring error.

The last line of first paragraph should read, 'which is quite frankly rubbish', and not 'which is quite franky ubbish'.

Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross have the freedom of speech to say the things they said because better people than they died for that freedom.

Those same people died so I can say it's offensive and should never have been broadcast.

Just because good people died for our freedom, it doesn't mean we have to exercise it ad-infinitum. Can we please let this thread die?

A forum isn't a very interesting forum if people don't post, and a thread dies when people having nothing else to say, not when someone asks for it to die.

They make weekly jokes about what the programme's lawyers will allow them say, because of the laws that prevent the innocent being slandered, and rightly so.

Still, they valiantly soldier on, and still make people laugh.;)

I agree about HIGNFY its very irreverent in its approach to everyday issues, but I can't remember the prog ever being censored, but I maybe mistaken

I'm sorry but I'm still missing the point with Boeing Guy and Meccy - at what point does what Jeremy Clarkson said become an issue for freedom of speech? He wasn't trying to further a cause, highlight an issue that needed raising or even make a point about anything - he was being downright rude and disrespectful to people and their families who were victims of an awful situation.

I'm not actually arguing against freedom of speech - I think it's good that on the whole in this country that's what we have - but I just don't think this issue comes under that category heading.

It's censored before it's even broadcast, as is explained here in an interview with the programme's writers. Otherwise the B.B.C. would spend all our licence fees paying damages awarded by a court of law.;)


Some of the best jokes on the show must make the lawyers sweat! Do they cut much?

Straight after the show the producer goes to the lawyers and says "no problems there eh?" Every so often the lawyers will say "we'll talk tomorrow" - then they'll see the first edit, and barter from there.

Funny how some people, those who think it's acceptable to make jokes about absolutely everything, including innocent victims etc, because you can joke about anything if you have total freedom of speech, get all hurt and teary when they are the subject of a harmless bit of banter.;)

I have no problem with Clarkson, tasteless yes, but just not someone I personally find amusing.

Must agree Rindi (this is becoming serious, me agreeing with Rindi so often:rolleyes:) I don't find him funny either, mainly because that, after watching one show, have never bothered again. If I want comedy, I'll watch people who are good at it and actually make their living at it
