Yes I shelter in their doorway when it's raining and I'm waiting for Mick to turn up to meet me on Broadway.

I hope so,
They put 100's of small firms out of business over the years, they get someone to make stuff for them for their own branding, get them to make that much that they only end up working for woolies then they decide not to buy any more off them unless they cut the price by about 50%

andrewb 19-11-2008 18:31

Re: Woolworth's

They're selling it for £1 apparently. Perhaps they could have a word with the shop on the corner.

A "pound shop"? That must be like our "dollar stores". That means that you guys are the victims of your currency. We buy crap for a dollar and you guys have to pay a pound for it! That doesn't sound like a good deal.

Re: Woolworth's

Awww I dont want it to close, bespite the trouble I have getting round it with my pram I still get quite a bit of stuff there for the boys, toys, the odd bit of clothing etc

Will be sad to see it go, that will only leave argos for toys then :(

Wilkinsons are pretty good for toys now Emzy. As for Woolworths very rare I use it.

I never seem to find what im looking for in wilkinsons, more of the larger branded toys arent in there, and to add its even worse trying to get round wilkinsons than it is woolies lol - plus i cant get through all of the checkouts without knocking something off lol

Was the Co-Op not where Redmans was? Not sure myself now, can only remember about Redmans because I used to do errands for an old lady who was very particular where you went for her food. Redmans was one shop she insisted on and Catlows was another.

The Co-op was definatley what became Mcdonalds. I vaguley recall a shop next door but can't remember if it was Redmans, for some reason I seem to recall Dewhurst butchers being there ?

Wynonie Harris 20-11-2008 16:00

Re: Woolworth's

Woolies was on the corner of Dutton Street and Blackburn Road, then after they moved out in 1961 to the (then) new shops on Broadway, it became the Co-op. More recently it became Macdonalds and then a restaurant. Dewhursts was further along the block towards Church Street. Redmans was on the next block, opposite the Town Hall at the St James Street corner.

Before my time. It was a Scottish guy called Ian when I used to go in (circa 1968-72). Went in for a quick pint a few weeks ago, before I went into the library for the Stanley exhibiton - totally unrecognisable from the pub it once was.

1979: A quarter of Pick n Mix - 20p

1989: A quarter of Pick n Mix - 35p

1999: A quarter of Pick n Mix - 52p

You're right there cashman, I used to work at Motorist Discount Centre in the early eighties. The old ovens from From Redman's were still in the back of the shop. I think that it is well sad. The hairdresser at the top of Ossy restyled my hair whilst I was there in October which resulted in finding a set of hair straighteners. Where did I find them? Woolies, 40 quid reduced to twenty and as I'd won a tenner on the lottery............a tenner.

There will never be another shop like Woolworths. A good hairdresser though.

I agree. My doom and gloom probably helped it all along...........you didn't really have to explain the Spanish though.

It will be a sad day for Accrington, if and when it closes.

Looks like the doors will close soon. The administrators are expected to announce a closing down sale tomorrow.

Re: Woolworth's

I called into ours this afternoon and to be honest They were only offering exactly what Boots, BHS and many other stores were offering, 20% In fact they were selling the big tins of sweets/chocs for a fiver and 2 wek back asda was doing the same tins only 2 for £7.
Needless to say I left empty handed but were shocked at what people were buying and thought they were getting a bargin.
