They may well be acoustic tiles - very different - and ideal in flats full of young people

I believe they are legally required to contain fire retardant chemicals as they are obviously a HUGE fire risk, particularly when idiots paint them (probably a good thing students aren't allowed to decorate after all!)

I have no idea though to be honest. Landlord and tenancy isn't something I know much about.

Obviously University accommodation is checked by the fire department regularly though so I think if they were breaking the law then the fire dept. would have noticed by now.

And they're definitely not acoustic tiles.

And most of Lancaster's accommodation is extremely good but I live in the old blocks from the 70's because it's about £20 a week cheaper.

You aren't even allowed candles in student accommodation so I don't see why they should allow smoking. Both are fire hazards, and cigarette smoke has the added problem of staining the ceiling, annoying neighbouring students and making everything stink. Is it really that much to ask that smokers go outside to avoid these problems?

polystyrene:eek:, hell that was outlawed years ago, bet the fire prevention officer isn't aware of this:eek::eek:

I had fire officers in my flat just the other week thanks to my flat mate. Shall I get one down and have a look at one :p

It's not polystyrene, though polystyrene tiles are still for sale in B&Q. It's some form of cardboardy type stuff. I'll have a go at setting a bit on fire.

Whatever it is, it doesn't flame, it just blackens.

That sounds like the acoustic tiles I mentioned earlier.
I am familiar with them because they are commonly used in suspended ceilings (were installed in the public building I was in charge of looking after at one time)

They probably are made out of similar stuff. There are lots of different sorts of acoustic tiles and panels.

It's not flammable anyway. I tried :p
