ANy supermarket that has to charge for parking is going to lose a lot of custom & as such will keep parking free, if the government make a law about it then the supermarkets will pay it themselves.

IMO.

Since these supermarkets are out to make a profit, for their owners and shareholders, i.e. the disgraced Dame Shirley Porter, ex-leader of Conservative Westminster Council, who is sunning herself in Tel Aviv whilst the profits roll in from her little shop,Tesco, any costs will be put onto the goods instore, and the customer will be paying.

I doubt it Mattylad, think shoppers will still not break the now established habit of going to the supermarket. Would pay what I suspect would be a minimal charge, which would probably undercut charges on a town car park (OK ... know Hyndburn don't charge).

I don't know what Accrington stores' arrangements are but Warrington has Sainsburys and Tesco with free car parks up to a point. Sainsburys gives you 3 hours free but then charges - and they do employ their own traffic warden who checks. Tesco was the same but has shortened the time and is losing trade a bit but their car park is owned by the Rugby Stadium. There's an Asda but it's in a mall and there's also another, very big, mall. You have to pay in their car parks. All the far-out-of-town stores are free parking.

We've always had free parking here in Lymm until this month when the car park in the village centre has gone to pay-and-display, first 2 hours free. We actually welcomed it as the car park was being taken up by people who work in the village, parking all day.

Don't have free parking at Sainbury's in Lancaster anyway after the first half an hour. Most people do use the buses in Lancaster though, and a lot more use of bikes that at home as well.

I think it's a good idea. I think car owners should be taxed according to how much they use their cars anyway though, which would be a much more general way of doing what he has proposed.

I think there are rules on this forum about blanking out swearing that have been repeated time and time again for the benefit of people who seem to be incapable of learning simple rules the first time around.

The point is pretty simple of what he is saying. The country is only permitted to have certain levels of carbon emissions, and these are slowly but surely being decreased in order to protect our environment and you could even argue that this is also trying to make people more active and healthy by being more active to do the things they want to do.

I'm sure it wouldn't kill people to get a bus to the supermarket. Plenty of people have to do a lot more just for the basic necessities in life like water.

You don't have to be posh to be privileged ;) maybe some people need their luxuries stripped away a bit just to remind them exactly how fortunate they actually are.

It's not about being offensive, it's a family forum and those are the rules that you agree to when you sign up. I don't see why anyone thinks they should be above them.

Good idea, we could call it a fuel duty.

I go on the bus to do my shopping all the time as i dont drive ... including getting all the big stuff ... ok theres only me .. im not buying for a family .. thing is i dont buy all my stuff in one go ...i go to accy, i go to haslingden, go to rawtenstall .. i just pick it up when i need it. So if they do bring it in .. and then the prices go up .. i will be subsidising all of the car owners .. even though i go on foot and public transport.

Lol, is fuel duty having much of an impact though. I think because the tax is associated with fuel rather than something more blatant than distances then it becomes less of an issue for people and they'll still use their cars just as much.

I mean, public transport is pretty expensive anyway when you think about it, so unless fuel duty is significantly more expensive than the cost (both of time as well as the fuel, maintenance etc) to the public then they'll continue to use their cars regardless.

I don't know the figures for things like fuel, it's not something I'm that interested in.

What I am more than aware of though is that there are plenty of people in the world that act like they would be incapacitated without their cars, when there are in actual fact plenty of people who cope fine by using the buses to do their shopping or go to work. Thousands and thousands of students and elderly people do it every day who can't afford to run cars.

Don't think it's suggested that you cannot take your car Panther, just pay for the privelege of parking up where you shop. We are used to (mostly) having this free at supermarkets and that is why we are aghast at the suggestion. Not everyone, goes for a huge shop all the time, and a car park fee may deter them from taking their car and on to the bus or shop more locally, or, at best, shop in their town centre.

Could be an extremely expensive way to implement this idea, as would need some sort of technology to link up with the DVLA to check your yearly mileage. Lots of people would complain was interfering with their Human Rights.

Suppose, in a way, we are taxed like this anyway, due to the fact that motorists who do lots of mileage per year, usually have larger cars and taxed on its car emmisions. Was surprised yesterday, talking to a neighbour who works on the motorways, that he uses his little Smart car for travelling to and fro, tax is only £35 per year !
