seems a groups of folks in Yorkshire are a bit upset about Christmas stuff being on sale in August .......got to say I tend to agree with them

Ken Bruce had 'Mr Christmas' on his Radio-2 Popmaster program today (28/8/09). This nutter apparently celebrates Christmas 24/7 all year round, buys presents and eats a turkey dinner every day. Many stores are now pushing Xmas cards and the usual trivia that does nothing but negate the true meaning of Christmas and encourages materialism beyond reason. Don't get me wrong; I love Christmas but as SteelJack states: it's only bleedin' August! I've also spotted Hallowe'en stuff in certain shops.

I read in the "SUN" the other day that Rochdale Council has put up their Christmas lights as their are "seasonal celebrations for several faiths, Eid in September, Hindu festival Diwali in October, Jewish holiday of Hannukah in December and even the Wicca festival Yule celebrated by white whiches and pagans on the winter solstice."

Is Christmas coming earlier and earlier? The lights were put up 127 days before Christmas and the temperature was more than 30C

For some the only way they can afford christmas is to start buying so early .. plus what about if they have to post stuff abroad ...

I saw before my birthday in july some calendars for next year in a shop and went into the cardshop in the arndale across from clintons yesterday and thats got all the christmas cards out - boxes and singles .. can you imagine buying a card for your girlfriend/boyfriend now then break up in november?:D:D:D

Anyway im not bothered .. ive already got my christmas cards - got em in the sale in january!!!!:D

More power to their collective elbow - and their glue pot. I like Christmas, honestly, but I don't like it until Christmas, if you see what I mean.

If I could pass a law it would have to be that no shop can display Xmas goods and no trees/decorations may be put up before 1 December each year. ;)

People don't have to buy this Christmas stuff. Consumers have a choice.

These sad militant Christians, I presume they're Christians or why bother, are sick, targeting charities who sell Christmas cards in August.

Harrod's Christmas department always opens in August.

Until a few years ago Accy had an all year round Christmas store, which was always busy, until their rent increases forced them to close, and resulted in yet one more empty shop in the town.

If there's no market they wouldn't be selling them, but obviously there is.

What are we to expect next? Bombs sent to the homes of the staff of these charity shops, similar to the actions of the animal liberationists?

Personally I agre to some extent, but it's all down to choice, and economics.

Business is hard enough at the moment, and if there are people willing to buy their unseasonal goods, more power to their tills.

Do people feel as strongly when spring/summer fashions hit the shop floors in Febuary?

Disliking something is one thing, but forcing a charity like MIND to spend money getting new locks fitted, and frightening their volunteers is sick.

I see they don't feel strongly enough about this trivial matter to sign their names to the threats, or go undisguised when carrying out their 'work'.

Weak cowards, who have to hide behind a cloak of anonymity.

I don't mind anyone buying Xmas presents months in advance. I don't even mind charities selling Xmas cards early. What I hate is going into a shop in September and being met with baubles, snowmen, tinsel and santas. It's ridiculous and has nothing to do with real Christmas, just money. :mad:

If Jesus Christ returned to Earth, him being the person whose birth the whole festival is supposed to be about, he would probably ask what 'baubles, snowmen, tinsel and santas' had to do with him in the first place, regardless of the month.

Explaining about Germanic Prince Albert popularising most Christmas traditions, probably wouldn't wash with Jesus.

As I said, I don't particularly like it, but targeting charity shops and their volunteers, and costing those charities money, and not being brave enough to put their names and faces to their 'campaign', is sadly pathetic.

Personally, I hope the prats who're behind this get nabbed and banged to rights.

Shops put Christmas stuff on display at this time of year for one reason and one reason alone - people want to buy it. If you don't, then go to another shop that doesn't have early Christmas stock.

As for it being about "making money" of course it's about making soddin' money - that's what shops do - they sell things to make dosh, whether it's for charity or for business reasons. No one's getting ripped off, no one's being forced to buy something they don't want to, so what's the big deal?
