I used to work in a grocery shop, you may not know this, but the shop has a receipt with your card number on, you have the one where most of your number is asterisked off, the shop has to keep the one with your full card number on so it can claim the money back from your bank. What has happened is, the phone top up has been done over the mobile using the receipt from the petrol station. It happened in Middleton when i lived there.

Hope your daughter gets her money back Kate.......it is the bleeding imbuggerance of having to do without your card for days until you get a new one, and also the fact that it is probably someone who was relying on her for help and care. As I said before.....they are scum.

I have had card protection for many years, they quite often ring and ask if I've used my card especially if its a sum oer £100, I get a written report every month as well

Thanks Bernie .. sorry I took over your thread with this story. Just that had been on the 'phone to her for an hour taking her vociferous upset ... needed to pass it on.

She will get her money back, it's just the worry wondering if they are going to hit on you with something else. Very clever of them to say it had been cancelled, giving them time to withdraw money before realisation hits you on how stupid you have been. That 1/2 hour gave them the time though.

Daughter textes me this morning ... purse stolen at work ... under her desk in her surgery. Only out of there for about 2 minutes to get stuff from fridge (probably injections or summat).

She is fairly sure took purse to work, as used Boots card to scrape ice off her car window .. :D However, you do question yourself. Not in car ... goes home at lunch to check if she did leave at home. Gets 'phone call on her mobile .. 'tis Nationwide, Bradford .."have had someone in trying to draw out £300 but no identification ... so didn't give them the money" Daughter confirms was not her  so they say "OK ... will cancel this card for you at once as obviously stolen"... asks for her address and date of birth. Daughter gives to them ...

She get suspicious .. goes back to work ... rings police .. they give her crime no. Rings Nationwide branch, Leeds ... "no, no-one from Nationwide has rung you", "but someone has just drawn £500 from your account using your debit card":eek:

Now the limit for drawing from a cash till at Nationwide is £500 per day .. but these buggers have gone to the desk to draw ... Nationwide ask for no pin number, no identification ... just rely on the signature ... Lots of their cash machines outside ... would be worth a query one would think.

She is assured will get her money back in 7/10 days ...but now worried ... how did they get her mobile no ? Not in her purse, or her paper work on her desk .. mobile phone in her pocket. Will they be able to get a credit card now having her name and birth date ? ...:eek:

She has an idea of the culprit, as one patient was in a hurry to get away .. and police are looking at CCTV at the bank ... however ...:mad: They getting clever .. giving you a false sense of security with the telephone call .....but Nationwide ...deary me !!!

There is no way my bank (NatWest) would have given me this amount of cash without a driving licence or passport !! And a bl**dy pin number.

Re: Keep Your Eyes Peeled

I have been scammed twice. Once while working in Riyhad and the other not too long ago. Both times the moneys were refunded withn a couple of days of completing the paperwork - on line. First came about when our IT man did not load the firewalls and I had made a car booking on line - very clever in a way only $29.99 per month, and hey got away with it for 3 or 4 months. Second time it was scanned in a filling station in Portsmouth, they then used it to transfer £300 overseas through the PO. It was discovered 2 days after and that was the only place I had used it in months, not in UK so I visited the filling station - with company. The 2 blokes that had worked in the kiosk had been fired the day before for theft and no details were available - wan't bothered as the bank refunded the money without any argument or delay.
Nowadays my PC/LT are maintained by me and if i use my cards I make sure that they never go out of my sight at all.

Not got anywhere yet, the police want more info from bank who want more info from O2. Trying to get hold of customer services at O2 proving difficult but no choice other than to keep trying them.

Sorry she has lost it, though it could just be possible because it has happened before to others, She was busy scrapey, scrape, scraping, feeling cold, rushes to get into the warmth of her car and inadvertently leaves the purse on her car roof.

Just spoken to offspring ... seems was a Matalan card ... not Boots ... says no, this was not in her purse, just separate in her car .. so no chance of leaving purse on the roof of her car.

Good news is .. the bank have already put the £500 back into her account !! Trouble is no new card arrived yet, and can't get down to the Nationwide due to working. Still, my birthday card I sent her on the 31st December 1st class hasn't arrived either, so looks like the Royal Mail have problems too.
